I went back to school to study advanced math a couple years ago and it was a blast. Math as an adult is great.

I was just thinking the other day I should check out graph theory

[-] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 16 points 4 weeks ago

I hear königsberg is lovely this time of year.

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 36 points 4 weeks ago

Ngl, I've been getting that a bit recently despite those classes being super stressful. There are a few classes, not just math, that I feel like I could gain a lot more out of by retaking them now with a couple years in the field behind me. Not that I did poorly in those classes, I did very well, but a lot of that stuff was just too abstract to me at the time to stick beyond the next exam.

I sometimes wish I could retake my school math classes. I was never good at math but I feel like now that I have seen some practical applications for stuff that we were force fed back them, I could learn it much better.

[-] cornshark@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

What practical applications?

I work in computer science (specifically in embedded software) and had a task last year where I needed to extract the pulse rate from a biosignal by detecting the signal peaks and measuring the intervals between them. Derivatives of the signal can be used for the peak detection, but I honestly did not think about this until a coworker reminded me.

For processing any digital signal, digital filters are incredibly important. When working with them, you will be exposed to polynomials though.

If you are interested in robotics, vectors are also quite important.

It was actually fun to do khan academy high school math on my own terms

[-] voodooattack@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

I think I might do that too in the future. Tried it before but I wasn’t in the right head space back then.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 19 points 4 weeks ago

Took me a moment to realize he didn't grab a pink frog outta nowhere to yell at...

[-] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 6 points 4 weeks ago

Oh good, you see them too

[-] Epp@lemmus.org 17 points 4 weeks ago

I experienced this while assisting someone with their homework. It's how I ended up in another country, earning a post-graduate degree, at forty. And brain was right, it WAS fun!

[-] psilotop@lemmy.world 16 points 4 weeks ago

Honestly, if you audit the class without the pressure of the grade, it probably WOULD be fun. The stress usually comes from needing a good GPA etc

[-] christian@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 weeks ago

A class of students doing that would be a million times more fun for the professors too. Acadamia would be so much better if education were its primary purpose.

"I bet I'd be better at studying now with my adult brain as I was back then"

lol no

[-] Yaky@slrpnk.net 13 points 4 weeks ago

I wrote a computer game (including the engine), and matrix / vector math plays a key role in movement and rendering. Definitely needed some refreshers, but the good thing is it is not abstract anymore like it was in school, all math things are directly relevant to in-game objects and mechanics.

[-] starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 weeks ago

I took a computer graphics class as a freshman that blew my mind with the concepts, but the math was way above my level. Basically 1/2 the class was graduate students, and the prof was talking about partial derivatives on day 1. There wasn't even a math requirement...

Around 4 years after the class I went and relearned it and finally realized what the teacher was talking about and I was blown away for a 2nd time.

[-] eyes_uncl0uded@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Is this computer game available? I'd like to try it out

[-] Yaky@slrpnk.net 3 points 4 weeks ago

Of course! Dark Streets on Lexaloffle

Plays in browser, you can see the code right there too, or LMK if you want a more-commented version (had to remove comments to save space)

[-] mesamunefire@piefed.social 10 points 4 weeks ago

When you get older you learn math with purpose can be really fun.

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 10 points 4 weeks ago

Ouch!

"Fun" is really not the right word. Even if you will like doing that course, "fun" is really not the right word.

[-] Epp@lemmus.org 13 points 4 weeks ago

It can be. Solving some equations feels a lot like manipulating a Rubik's cube, and people can find those fun, right?

[-] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

I got as far as Calculus III and Linear Algebra in college. Nowadays I'm sure I could not do a derivation or an integration to save my fucking life and when I see a matrix my brain thinks "wow, numbers in a grid!"

[-] save_the_humans@leminal.space 3 points 4 weeks ago

I would love to take a class on functional analysis

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 4 weeks ago

or gen and upper division chem, and biochem. both are very unpleasant.

[-] Ertain@mast.linuxgamecast.com 2 points 4 weeks ago

@OryxAndCake That's a nice trick she can do with removing her brain.

[-] spacegoat@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I’ll take the waterboarding instead, thank you

[-] Batman@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

can tell they need more math classes because they have all those cowlicks

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
