Trying to get HRT.. (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 12 hours ago by MapleFawn to c/mtf

For me to get HRT I need the gender dysphoria / gender incongruent diagnosis, then it would be covered by the healthcare system. So would be electrolysis, voice training and if necessary Facial feminisation surgery. It’s just that only a few places are allowed to give you the diagnosis and they do assess you for about half a year. I finally got into the place in my area and they sent me a letter that they might start the assessment in about 3 or more years. Yaaaaaaaaay…… :-(

So how has your week been?

For me (in a red US state) it was 2 meetings with a doctor (one to assess if I was someone who actually had thought this through, and one to go over the effects and prescribe me the HRT) it was completely free (including medication) and I only had to wait 2 weeks for the appointment. This is how it should be for everyone and it breaks my heart that it isn't (っ˘̩╭╮˘̩)っ

We can only dream, though I am super grateful and happy that there are some of us where it just works.

This is why so many of us go DIY!

I really love this guide, every time someone shares it, it makes me happy.

I will ofc try to get the clinic to move their ass faster but if all fails there is DIY for the time being. I’d rather have it covered though by the system :-/

It's an opportunity to get a head start. No point wasting years of your life waiting for a government full of bigoted assholes to get their shit together.

Hey I would assume we're in the exact same position, kinda assuming we're in the same country judging by your description. I was just very lucky regarding into the queue for the assessment. I was actually initially booked with a psychiatrist to get placed in queue for ADHD/Autism evaluation but gently posed the question on whether he knew anyone who could help me deal with gender dysphoria. Luckily they had multiple people on that clinic who had previously been working in trans healthcare and immediately booked a time (just the next week) with another psychiatrist/doctor.

The next weekend I had about a one hour meeting with her, she was amazing, basically just immediately put me in queue to the gender dysphoria team at the end of the meeting. But on top of this she went out of her way to say that she could take over all of my current in-progress evaluations, aswell as ensure we took proper values during those blood tests to ensure that "everything was fine if i started treating things on my own". She "obviously couldnt recommend it" but also nudged me in the direction of "you seem like youve read up on alot", "most trans people who do it are fine", "it seems way safer to source now that historically", and so on. Also reassured me that going DIY cannot stop you from receiving healthcare once youre get through the queue.

From all the horrors ive heard of how the gender dysphoria evaluation teams and doctors treat patients who has done DIY she really gave me the greatest reassurance a doctor could give. She just really wanted to help and I am so grateful for it ❤️

Not saying this is right for you or what you should be doing. I was just extremely lucky since i was already in the system. But we're both in the queue now, 3 years to go. Atleast... Unless the next government fixes it. Pretty sure I wont be putting my life on hold anymore though. I managed 5 years of work after graduating uni but then i got hit with burnout and i realized i need to do something now, 3 years is crazy. I just wanted to share some positivity in our really garbage system, all of the best wishes to you ❤️

Thanks, maybe I should steal your doctor :P she seems great. I will see if I can bully the clinic into just signing off the papers or if I can get evaluated elsewhere and then make them take over my existing treatment. My second citizenship has to be good for something.

The way to the clinic was kinda alright all in all 4 meetings and a telephone call over 2 months. But now the wait for the actual assessment is madness.

Same situation. After being passed between the specialist clinic, my primary clinic and a private counsellor for six months, a doctor at my primary clinic finally decided that they are able to refer me to the specialist clinic. Now it's "just" a question of waiting for my turn, getting evaluated and then maybe being eligible for gender affirming treatment. All I want is to be able to love myself.

I wish you all the best on your way forward. It is crazy how many gatekeeper and blocks are on the way. I get it that you need to be sure, have sufficient time pass and all but this is a tad much.
