Wait, why isn't the author's name scrubbed off? We're giving them credit now??? (/s, just in case)

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 48 points 1 month ago

I saw that there was some discussion about this the other day, but this community moves so fast that I didn't catch all the details.

My unsolicited 0.02 is that crediting in the title or body seems reasonable whenever the artist's signature/watermark isn't present.

[-] brsrklf@jlai.lu 66 points 1 month ago

Yeah it's perfectly fine. And just leaving the signature is too. The discussion is mostly around that one troll actively removing signatures when they exist because "that's an ad".

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Ah, that makes sense.

[-] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 14 points 4 weeks ago

I hadn't read the discussion but saw there was one and had wondered why anyone would want to remove an artist's signature. That's crazy. What a weird world view.

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 4 weeks ago

I would only remove when it's one of those cases where the artist is a tremendous piece of shit, but the comic or edited meme is good

[-] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 weeks ago

I don't think I'd even post the comic of someone I knew to be terrible.

[-] FoxyFerengi@startrek.website 15 points 1 month ago

I'm glad it has the name of the comic and the artist visible. I just went to check out some of the comics, they are so cute!

[-] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 weeks ago

Depending on the situation, sure. If the comic doesn't have a signature in the margins already (like XKCD) then credit in the title/body. If the signature is in the margins, and cropped out, then that's bad form. Comics are often re-shared and the title/body doesn't always come along.

After you remove the signature from the comics, credit is going to quickly get lost as the re-posts happen.

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

Lower right corner has the signature. This is pre www.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 month ago

Wow, a comic dated pre World War Wan

[-] Damage@feddit.it 7 points 4 weeks ago

They clearly meant What Women Want, the historically successful movie starring Will Smith as a relationship consultant who drives around the wasteland in his V8 Interceptor.

[-] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 weeks ago

What did Wan do that we went to a World Word with him?

[-] jimerson@lemmy.world 37 points 1 month ago

Thank you for posting these.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago

I'm happy to!

[-] Dicska@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago

Wow, this looks like it's from around the '70s! I wonder what magazine/newspaper it was featured in.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 47 points 1 month ago

It was apparently a Hungarian comic that ran from 1957-1970. I only recently encountered it for the first time.

[-] Dicska@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

I have never heard of that before (I was born way after that, though). I wonder how such niche things get to lemmy users sometimes.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 weeks ago

With the way enshittification is going, mining the past for forgotten gems will become more beneficial than ever.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 weeks ago

The plant grew so much it turned her house into a jungle and made her feral.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 5 points 4 weeks ago

And that is the author's barely disguised fetish. Death by snu snu

[-] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago

He gave her a plant and she likes it wayy more than she likes him

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 5 points 4 weeks ago

Now that's a weird alteration of the name Jessica. Or is this where Jessica came from?

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 4 points 4 weeks ago

It's a way to spell Jessica.

It's a real tragedeigh

[-] Widukin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 weeks ago

It's a petname for Judith in Hungarian.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
