Wanted to create a 5th character in a game to test something and ran out of variations of my normal username 15 years ago. Test worked out, it became my main and now we're here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

From Jules Verne's posthumously published work, "Paris in the 20th Century"

“Ah!' said Michel, tempted, 'you have modern poems?' 'Of course. For instance, Martillac's 'Electric Harmonies,' which won a prize last year from the Academic of Sciences, and Monsieur de Pulfasse's 'Meditations on Oxygen;' and we have the 'Poetic Parallelogram,' and even the 'Decarbonated Odes. . '

As a scientist with a deep love of the humanities, I found Verne's view that science would ruin literature and poesy quite humorous. Especially since in reality it has just neglected it.

Mine is from a GameCube era videogame that if anyone asks and I answer have no idea what I am talking about.

[-] eolei@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Long story short I got frustrated trying to think an username and typed angrily "ei ole" in Finnish (means it isn't) and then it hit me.

[-] Klear@quokk.au 1 points 4 hours ago

I liked Shakespeare and Serious Sam

[-] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I was told by everyone I knew growing up and even now that I was weird, a freak, different. So I just kinda went with it.

To be fair to all of them they're completely correct it just took me awhile to see why. I have to constantly remind myself that I don't think like most people or act like most people to the point it's instantly obvious to pretty much everyone around me

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 6 hours ago

I'm an Ashkenazi cephalopod.

[-] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Random keyboard mash. I think it turned out alright.

[-] kionay@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

When I was something like 8-12 years old I was watching Toonami and Cartoon Network. At that time shows like Tenchi Muyo and YuYu Hakusho, despite being very different, took up the same headspace to little kid me. When I needed to come up with a username for the first time ever it was on a now-extinct Game Shark forum and it was as uninspiring as a kid would likely make, something like user123 or whatever.

The second username I ever made, and I don't remember what website it was originally for, I wanted to use the name of a character from one of the shows I was watching. I transcribed the name like how I thought it would be spelled. The character's actual name would now be spelled kione from Tenchi Muyo. The character I thought I had come up with the name for, though, was someone with red hair, but whom I thought was a demon in the show. I'm not certain anymore, since this is over 15 years ago, but the character I was trying to name was either Kurama from YuYu Hakusho who is a demon, or Washu Hakubi from Tenchi Muyo who isn't a demon because that's not a thing in Tenchi Muyo, but I think I just conflated the characters into one. Doesn't matter, since I got the name wrong either way.

t;dr dumb little kid me conflated red-haired anime mad scientist with red-haired anime demon, and the name from a third anime character. I spelled "kione" as "kionay" phonetically. poorly. been using it ever since.

I like the anonymity this community offers and to laugh, hence Someonelol.

[-] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

I'm drunk. I live in Texas. So it was very difficult to choose my username.

[-] i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk 43 points 17 hours ago

I AM HUMAN. I ASSIGNED MYSELF THIS USERNAME AS PROOF.

Greetings, fellow human. I, too, chose a very normal human name as humans often express interest in the taxonomy of mathematical relations.

[-] P1nkman@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING? THINK IS AN INDICATOR THAT YOU ARE A ROBOT. YOU MUST BE BLOCKED. BEEP BEEP BOOP

[-] nimble 15 points 14 hours ago

It's my favorite opening move in Wordle like games. Screw you vowel lovers with your AUDIOs and OUTIEs.

It chose me

[-] felsiq@piefed.zip 3 points 11 hours ago

I’ve never really done online identities much but was tired of picking shit names, so this time around I put some actual thought into it. Picked a word I like from one of my interests (felsic, a geology word describing the composition of an igneous rock) and then tweaked the spelling cuz my instinct is to obscure any connection that might be revealing. Obviously I’ve relaxed on that last part a little now given I’m saying this here lmao

[-] 0ops@piefed.zip 23 points 17 hours ago

By accident

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 6 points 13 hours ago

Im remarkably childish, and when asked a question the first thing that pops into my head is often "your mom". I live in Scotland now and "yer maw" is how they say that.

To the untrained eye, yermaw looks like it could be a real name, or some weird DnD monster or something so I got away with that to some extent.

[-] moondoggie@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Well, now I’ve gotta attack my players with a yermaw

[-] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Mine is a variation of one I used for years on other services.

[-] hitstun@feddit.online 12 points 16 hours ago

In 2002, I tried dozens of fighting game related usernames on AOL Instant Messenger until I found one that was still available without modification. Since then, I've been hitstun, making combos possible.

[-] MeowerMisfit817@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

Random username generator

Most of my usernames are made like this to ensure I won't feel cringe about it some years later (memories with "UnicornSarah8272" in Brawl Stars at 2016)

[-] STUNT_GRANNY@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

It's a username that stands out, doesn't require any leetspeak to be legible, and it has yet to be already taken whenever I create an account somewhere.

I didn't realize until recently, several years after I started using the name everywhere, that the name comes from a professional wrestling trope.

[-] Illegalmexicant@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago

Are you a mexi-can or mexi-can't?

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

The first part is short for my initials, (Zebra Ignatious Kavanaugh) the second part is for where I was born (Zambia, After Khristmas) and the 25 is for 2025, the year I was born.

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

[-] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 11 points 17 hours ago

I used Bitwarden to generate a random word plus a number.

[-] hefty4871@lemmy.ca 5 points 16 hours ago

Hey me too!

[-] Pirtatogna@lemmy.world 12 points 18 hours ago

Slammed some letters together in a way that produces somewhat pronouncable word. Absolutely zero meaning behind it.

[-] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

I like chickens

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 9 points 17 hours ago

That's so interesting. What was your mother's maiden name and the name of your first pet?

[-] zxqwas@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Keys on a qwerty keyboard when qwer asdf and the other usual suspects were taken.

[-] timestatic@feddit.org 3 points 13 hours ago

Honestly I used to want to do YouTube and I had a pretty bad user name prior. So I once like 5 years ago or so spent the entire night going through potential names and combinations in my head until I had one that sounded right towards my liking: timestatic

I wanted something that didn't resemble anything else like an object but was its own unique thing. I'm still pretty happy with it. It was available everywhere except Minecraft and Twitch which pissed me off at the time since Minecraft was my main game then. I think I named myself RealTimestatic or sth similar back then there

[-] BussyCat@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Well you see three is the phrase pussy cat and there is this thing called a bussy and if you put them together you get a bussycat

I am totally not Spez!

[-] gary@piefed.world 6 points 16 hours ago

I searched for my middle name (name that I go by) and it was already taken but surprisingly my first name was still available on Piefed ¯_(ツ)_/¯
