I am 50 and was just recently diagnosed and started taking meds.

The difference has been night and day. I still struggle to take my pull in the morning sometimes

I look back on my life and wonder what I could have accomplished if I had been diagnosed and treated earlier.

[-] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago

Life is taking me raw and tbh staying OFF of caffeine has helped me. Sleep is hella important for my insomniac ass.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 6 days ago

It’s true. I went to an NHS ADHD clinic and they turned me away without testing anything, after a year on the waiting list, as I didn’t look mental enough (though they told me there was definitely something up). Ever since I have survived on caffeine and rage.

[-] dRLY@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 days ago

Hell, I am medicated and still go hard with caffeine and rage.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 75 points 1 week ago

Panic also works if anger isn’t available.

[-] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Okay but could we tone down the panic back to a more manageable level, like 9/10, instead of usual 28/10?

[-] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

drinks my 4th cup of News Sorry what? Speak up. The panic attacks are loud.

Lots of caffeine to bring you up during the day and alcohol to slow the racing thoughts at night. It's no way to live.

Every once in a while I still encounter parents who are hesitant to get their ADHD kid on meds. I try to explain to them that it's not really about performance in school even if that's where it was first noticed.

It's about keeping them from killing themselves or engaging in incredibly self destructive behavior.

[-] Sparky 15 points 1 week ago

I got to experience that a couple of days ago. I should probably get diagnosed...

I find doing CrossFit multiple times a week helps at night. Turns out if you are sufficiently physically exhausted the thoughts tend to slow down. But if they don't that's fine because you are liable to pass out as soon as you stop moving.

Wait, the anger is a thing related to adhd?

I always felt like somewhat of a nutcase for getting pissed off at stuff not working/going my way (shout at the pc until you figure out how to get the driver working again).

Jogging/biking: get pissed, the burning anger gets you through.

In an odd way anger manages to focus me but it’s just not a healthy way to live :/

Edit/Disclaimer: I never said I shout at people.

[-] Dunstabzugshaubitze@feddit.org 22 points 1 week ago

emotional dysregulation is a common symptom of adhd, meaning intensity of (initial) emotional responses can go overboard.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

Oh. Well. I just thought I was passionate like the crashing of a thousand waves.

[-] porksnort@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 week ago

Anger is a natural result of discovering that your natural abilities are routinely exploited and taken for granted but your needs that are a direct result of those same abilities will not be met.

My emotions are very well regulated, thank you. It is normal to feel anger when gaslit into thinking your normal human variation is a disorder.

[-] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

There's poor emotional regulation but adrenalin is also self-medication. So screaming at other people gets your adrenaline up which helps you focus and feel good. Obviously unhealthy and sucks for everybody around you. Very toxic.

[-] StopSpazzing@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

All i read is shouting at people makes me feel good. Gotta go try it out.

[-] monkeyman512@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Yeah. Do some therapy and you will find out lots of things you "just do" are adaptations to compensate for ADHD. Shifting to healthier ways of doing things can be tough. It's hard to let go of habits that have "worked so far".

I have been frustrated and angry easily for far too much of my life and I brought it up, among other issues to a psychiatrist and he said its also a symptom of bipolar type 2 as well as adhd.

Just gonna keep ignoring these increasingly relevant memes and move on, fuck you very much.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 14 points 1 week ago

That too is a symptom 😈

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Real question: what kind of content do you expect from this community?

At its core, ADHD is just a vague, flexible list of symptom checkboxes that are part of the neurodivergent spectrum. Tick enough of the boxes, and you are considered ADHD. Tick enough of some other boxes, and you are considered autistic. Tick enough ADHD and autism boxes, and you're AuDHD.

The vast majority of people will tick at least one box from the neurodivergent list, this is what people mistakenly refer to as "everyone is a little bit autistic", and is why these memes can apply to a lot of people, or not apply to you at all as someone with an ADHD diagnosis.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

For overachievers there's also the fear of being seen as a fraud >.<

[-] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 21 points 1 week ago

Me, a Neurodivergent: i don't need any of this pesky chemical stimulant stuff to get through life.

Also me: Addicted to both caffeine and sugar.

If you microdose a breakdown by crying in a closet afterwards you get extra cooldown reduction.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Caffeine, anger, and anxiety…

[-] Geobloke@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago

Only when the dead line is close though

[-] StopSpazzing@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Microwave works fine too

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 7 points 1 week ago

Caffeine leads to anxiety

Anxiety leads to anger

Anger leads to the Dark Side

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

My favorite dark side is French Roast.

You forgot spite. Spite is more effective than anger because it's less distracting and lasts longer.

[-] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Spite is the brand name for Anger XR.

[-] Fedi-bitch@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago
[-] varyingExpertise@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah, dunno. The problem is, that reality in this case is often perceived through a filter of "not being good enough" and "people dislike me" and stuff like that. It's not really reality, is it.

Why caffeine? I have an ADHD assessment and for the first appointment that was one of the questions, if I drank caffeine and how much if so.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Most people who seek professional help have at one time attempted to self-medicate to resolve their issues.

Stimulants are what you would self-medicate with for ADHD. Caffeine is a simulant.

Source: I used to drink up to 3 energy drinks per day to stay on task at work. It was literally killing me

I had a lovely conversation with another unmedicated parent. It's the first time in a while that the mask came off a bit in that circle. It was nice.

Why is Mac wearing a hardhat?

[-] monkeyman512@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Because the meme can work a lot of construction workers also.
