ICE are cowards at heart. That's why they were noticeably absent from Compton. They are only brave when they have overwhelming force and firepower. If they tangled with any LA street gangs they wouldn't survive.

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 8 points 3 days ago

Their new thing is waiting outside of immigration court rooms.

[-] Inucune@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

All public buildings have fire extinguishers in accessible locations. If you see a conflagration, use a fire extinguisher to put it out.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

A smug line to toss off. But I'm not seeing a line of people ready to confront these thugs physically.

More often than not, they operate in gangs and are quick to call reinforcements. They're armed, they're hot-headed, they're extremely dangerous to be anywhere near, and they have total disdain for criminal retribution.

[-] Inucune@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I see people confronting them, just not on the TV. The revolution will not be televised.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 days ago

Hey if they actually started dealing with the street gangs, I'd grab some popcorn and watch. From a distance, I don't even live in the US.

With them deporting and/or murdering a lot of people working low-end jobs... Yeah I don't think Americans want to do some of those jobs. The folks that have said raising the minimum wage would raise prices for everything are going to find out what happens if you raise the wages making sure there's no-one who would do the job.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago

Its genocide on US soil.

We aren't at steps 6-8, we're at 9 & 10

The genocide is started and active

1k "missing" prisoners from Alligator Auschwitz is irrefutable proof of this

[-] Limonene@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

What's the recourse for that? Do the surviving relatives of the disappeared sue the government? How much does that cost?

They won't go after the gangs. They might fight back.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 38 points 4 days ago

It's too bad there doesn't seem to be a profit to the cartel gangs to come out and fight the ICE gangs. They'd win if they did.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

they are mostly in mexico though, and i heard prices of cocaine dropped because trump pulled most of BORDER police out to fight assist ICE. leading to unabated drug trafficking.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

And the rest would be fighting the MAGA crowd...

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago

they also have GUNS, are much prone to using it. ice hires very out of shape people on undefended people, not people that will shoot at the moments notice.

My mayor, Keith Wilson of Portland, made a great point over the weekend in the midst of Trump's attack on the city that's stuck with me.

To paraphrase, since I've heard multiple versions of it, "Imagine if instead he sent hundreds of engineers, hundreds of teachers, or hundreds of addiction specialists."

Trump has no interest in improving America, only in being a strongman dictator.

To paraphrase, since I’ve heard multiple versions of it, “Imagine if instead he sent hundreds of engineers, hundreds of teachers, or hundreds of addiction specialists.”

We treat these professions as a public cost that drags the economy with debt and taxes. By contrast, ICE and the National Guard are always somehow paid for with free money.

There's never anything in the budget for engineers or teachers or physicians. Only armed thugs.

Trump has no interest in improving America, only in being a strongman dictator.

Better to rule in hell than serve in heaven.

[-] Seleni@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

The problem is the local yokels outside the city don’t see this as a good point, but as him being a sniveling fool who needs a Real Man like Trump to run his city. And that’s because they have a very different worldview.

Most same people, like us, see being bad or good as something you do, and as such, with proper care and help and education you can do better.

They, on the other hand, see bad and good as something you are, a sort of fundamental birth stat that can never change. That’s why they think these ICE raids are a good thing, that’s why they want prisons to just be wholly punitive, that’s why they’re fine with writing off whole groups. Because those people are Bad, and so they will always do Bad Things, and only naive fools think that Bad People can become Good.

The really troubling part of their worldview, though, is a lot of them seem to think Bad radiates out from these people/groups and infects things around them.

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

They, on the other hand, see bad and good as something you are, a sort of fundamental birth stat that can never change.

Holy shit. Thank you for this. You have no idea how long I've been looking for a more succinct explanation for this whole mess.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 days ago

It would explain a lot, wouldn't it?

No matter what a republican does, it's good. No matter what a democrat does, it's bad. I'm not even going to get into the whole issue of how democrats are still center-right and there's no true left in the US (not a politically relevant one, anyway - I know people with opinions exist).

It's why Trump being on the Epstein list is no big deal - but Biden investing money into, among other things, green energy - which caused more American jobs to be created - was a bad thing.

[-] Seleni@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah, it’s seems the only way they think that stat can change is if you ‘find God’. Because only an all-powerful God can change an inherent stat.

I think that’s also why they so readily believe that you can ‘pray the gay away’. It’s not because they don’t believe being LGBTQ+ isn’t inherently a birth thing; it’s because they already know God can change Bad People to Good People so obviously he can take other ‘Badness’ away too.

[-] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 67 points 4 days ago

Fascists will never solve real problems. They need them to persist to keep exploiting the fear and the scapegoating. They’re never responsible, they only point and blame

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

They’re never responsible, they only point and blame

Funny you should mention it, the support for far right parties in several European countries collapsed once they get into government. Turns out they are all bark and no human articulation. But it is risky to just let the far right take power and let them make mistakes for everyone to see, as we are seeing right now in America.

They arrested on duty wild fire firefighters

[-] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 32 points 4 days ago

Lmao, imagine ICE in a gang shootout.

They are prob banned from doing so as they would risk exposing their weakness.

[-] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

It's impossible not to see them as storm troopers in literally every way

[-] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 12 points 3 days ago

Ah, yes, the galaxy's elite fighting force.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Lmao, imagine ICE in a gang shootout.

Liberal fantasies. This is one way that Biden simply carried the torch for Trump.

Fascists always go after the weak and the poor. They're just coward pieces of shit.

[-] MrSulu@lemmy.ml 16 points 3 days ago

To our eyes int the UK, I think many see this as it is. A completely unlawful horror. A significant minority, and growing, are however buying into overtly blaming migrants, brown, black etc. for anything. My family, friends and community are recieving increasingly open comments for being brown, with specific abusive terms. It is getting ugly.

[-] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 8 points 3 days ago

Nothing good was ever achieved by emulating the US. I would think the UK would be smarter than that.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 days ago

The UK has had its own racism problem for a long time now (honestly, have they ever NOT had a racism problem? They were slightly less racist than the US though, in that they abolished slavery much earlier). They exited the EU to get rid of all the immigrants. You know, the ones doing all the jobs they didn't want to do, for less money than they'd want for it.

Atrocities*

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

These kinda libs attacking "street gangs" are fascist enablers. Police bootlickers. Worthless.

Liberals like this are why we have fascism.

[-] nomy@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago

That was your first thought wasnt it?

[-] Hozerkiller@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

You are so close yet so far.

[-] buttnugget@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Obviously they continue to validate everything we’ve been saying for the last 25 years. It’s disgusting. And they’ve honestly kind of changed my position on immigration a bit in the sense that in the past, I might have said we should deport hardcore criminals.

[-] pyre@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

if you want to take away people's rights away you can't just do a blanket infringement on everyone immediately; there would be too much resistance. you have to start with the most powerless and marginalized. then you can expand step by step.

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

But I thought good ol' god-fearin' true 'murican white folk were going to rush to fill those jobs now that they're available?

Are you telling me that Trump of all people didn't weigh out the consequences of his idiot actions?

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

When has he ever?

[-] southrydge@lemdro.id 3 points 3 days ago

They're defense is an old 60 year old mother who works 3 jobs has "ties to MS-13". Only the "bad ones" are being deported. Right? RIiiiiight.

[-] Hikermick@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

They forgot "people who put food on our tables "

[-] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

When you have numeric targets to reach, you aim for easy targets first. Everything that before was just a warning now is an arrest. You are leaving the country at the airport? Wait! You overstayed your visa by one week, you're under arrest!

[-] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

ice, a bunch of cheap waffle fed fat dumb failed excuses for human beings loaded to their jiggly fat tits with armaments, who would most likely shoot their foot off if they ever were brave enough to pull out their weapon when their is someone on the other side also with a gun. ice vermin only go after those they perceive as weak and have no weapons.

[-] buttnugget@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Nothing wrong with being fat. Fascism is the problem.

an actual street gang, drug gang, would be much harder to find and much more violent, if they were dealling with SOY BOY ICE.

THE POLICE PROBLEM

3871 readers
110 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

♦ ♦ ♦

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.
