Centrist Democrats like Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom seem to think the best way to disparage Donald Trump is to highlight his departures from free-market orthodoxy. Good luck with that.

When will they learn that fascism is the marriage of corporation and state. Stop using "communism" as a boogeyman, nobody under 50 takes you seriously for saying it.

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 7 points 2 weeks ago

Off topic, but I think it's funny that the cutoff for a more modern worldview ends at 50 now, because all the older millennials are well into their 40s now and we have to include them because they were a main driving force behind "occupy" movement 14 years ago.

10 years ago you saw "under 40" being thrown around. 😂

[-] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Lol am elder millennial around 40, how could you guess?

I have lots of Gen X friends who are lifelong allies too. But a lot of folks over 50 are still living in the Cold War.

[-] TommySoda@lemmy.world 81 points 2 weeks ago

in my opinion, It's the same bullshit she pulled during the election. She's trying to appeal to the other side by using one of their buzzwords instead of backing up the people that actually want to support her. It's literally yelling at a brick wall at this point.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe I'm missing it in the article, but I'm not seeing that Harris ever said Trump is a communist. She said he's a tyrant and that we used to compare our leaders to communist leaders, but I didn't see her ever actually call him or really even insinuate that he's a communist. I could have missed the quote or maybe the quote was not included.

[-] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 15 points 2 weeks ago

We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators. That’s what we’re dealing with right now in Donald Trump. And these titans of industry are not speaking up!

English is not my first language, but according to this quote, she seems to call him a „communist dictator“

[-] EarthshipTechIntern01@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

The thing she's doing is comparing him to dictators, Communist is kind of a passing flag. The huge stupidity of the statement is expectations that the "titans of industry"would speak up. They always do, through her, the DNC, as well as the entirety of the GOP. Titans of industry always play both sides & let us wallow in the division & chaos.

If she hadn't sold out, she could have checked the votes & found she had won (were it not for Elon's "handling"of swing states'votes).

[-] prole 3 points 2 weeks ago

Also, note that this was in her book. It wasn't an off the cuff remark. This was carefully thought out and edited. She could have very easily just used a different word.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'm only being pedantic because the media is just running with this story that Harris says trump is a commie, and it's not quite true. I'd argue she's more comparing our government under Trump to that under a communist dictator. It's not a big difference, but I think the weight of her statement is that Trump is a dictator not that he's a communist. I don't think that use of the word "communism" was an accident because it does stir some emotions in Americans because for 70+ years we've been ingrained with the idea that communism == dictatorship.

Trump is a piece of shit, waste of oxygen, dictator wannabe and Putin puppet, but he's not a communist, and I think that this narrative takes the current situation and dilutes it a little bit. Idk if I articulated that well, but at the end of the day, fuck Trump, and fuck conservatives. They're all a bunch of cunty fuck faces.

[-] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 42 points 2 weeks ago

It feels like everyone is focusing too hard on that one word: communist. To me it's very clear the sentiment behind what she said was that Trump is acting exactly like the dictatorial leaders of the communist nations that America has been fighting against and villainizing for the last 50 years: the USSR, north Korea, communist China, etc.

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah when asked if she thought he was fascist, she responded "you could say that".

Anyone who thinks she was calling him communist in these statements is intentionally looking for something to be mad about. The lady isn't even running for anything, and likely never will again.

She thinks Trump is a tyrant.
These comments started on Fox/News Max, then I saw them make their way into Hexbear, to ML and now being posted here. Seems the Left and Right agree that it's best fight centrists to ensure the status quo stays in power.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 14 points 2 weeks ago

Kamala is the status quo, so is the DNC.

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago
[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 6 points 2 weeks ago

Absolutely. She's aiming to replace HRC, and never keep silent.

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Harris is a has-been and in this case a distraction.

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

Seems to me that the main problem is she needs to stop mincing her words. "You could say that" ?! Be definite, woman!

[-] the_q@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

Someone read the article.

[-] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 26 points 2 weeks ago

Someone had a reading comprehension failure.

Do better, Jacobin.

[-] oxysis 20 points 2 weeks ago

She is really trying to look like a clown, isn’t she?

Well at least she is throwing away any chance of her running again

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 7 points 2 weeks ago

Makes sense though. They elected a clown last time.

[-] cattywampas@midwest.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

She was never gonna run again. She was an unpopular candidate to begin with, and only ran because there was no other option. Biden and the Democrats really fucked us over.

[-] oxysis 8 points 2 weeks ago

The democrats have been running unpopular candidates the past 3 elections, Biden only got in because of how poorly managed Covid was. I have no faith in the democrats to run a not dogshit candidate ever

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 11 points 2 weeks ago

He IS acting like a communist dictator.

[-] november@piefed.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 weeks ago

The key word there is "dictator", not "communist".

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 weeks ago

Seems to me that's the emphasis she gave it too. Her point was that Trump is a tyrant, not that he is a communist.

[-] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe 12 points 2 weeks ago

Nothing communist about him.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 3 points 2 weeks ago

There wasn't much pure communism in Russia either, but that's what we call it.

[-] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 weeks ago

No, we called the USSR communist. After the USSR dissolved in 1991, Russia became an independent country, the Russian Federation, with a different political and economic system.

A better comparison would be China, who does claim to be communist—yet has next to zero to do with actual communism (‘socialist’ market economy mixed with authoritarianism)

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

Authoritarianism and communism/socialism are two different things.

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 5 points 2 weeks ago

No shit, but the actual real life communist dictators didn't exactly follow the ideology now did they?

[-] socsa@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

No she doesn't. She was trolling him. A bunch of terminally online leftists caught strays, but I promise you they weren't a real consideration.

[-] ClassStruggle@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

She called him a communist, she's as fucking braindead as the rest of BlueMAGA and MAGA

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago

When all you read is Jacobin and WSWS, your mind gets warped.

[-] chiocciola@lemmy.cafe 5 points 2 weeks ago

Jfc Kammy, die politically with grace, not by accusing people of being commies.

[-] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yes Lemmy, keep feeding the Russian trolls regurgitating this deliberate misinterpretation.

Keep ranting about Harris while a number of you let the Nazis take power by refusing to do anything.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Centrist Democrats like Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom seem to think the best way to disparage Donald Trump is to highlight his departures from free-market orthodoxy. Good luck with that.

Siloed much? LMAO, this was their (ironic use intended) Trump card to scuttle him? American Democrats need to take a walk out and speak with people a little less connected to their own news feed, this is ridiculous, some prime political policy inbreeding if I do say so. How in the fuck was this the best that they could produce?

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

At least between her already failing in a presidential bid and terminal lack of charisma, we probably don't have to worry about her running again.

[-] Feyd@programming.dev 3 points 2 weeks ago

They're obviously going to run Hillary Clinton again

[-] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago

Running Newsom is probably worse than Hillary running again.

[-] devolution@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Every time she opens her mouth, a tankie smugly smiles at my liberal ass and says "told you so."

UGH!!!

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Real actual Fascists are actively dismantling our systems of government and eroding our rights and freedoms. Why the fuck should anyone care what Kamala Harris did or in this case definitely didn't say? The media should be reporting on the actual criminals in power and y'all need to stop letting them distract you with pure fluff. And OP I hope you're getting well paid for being a shill for the right, because other conservative shills are getting millions from Russia, so don't sell yourself short.

[-] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago
[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Harris is irrelevant and is pulling eyes away from the actual criminal running our country into the ground. Hope that helps.
