Good. Fuck trophy hunters. Deserved exactly what he got.

[-] Bort@sh.itjust.works 35 points 3 weeks ago

Exactly my sentiment.

[-] SilverCode@lemmy.ml 122 points 3 weeks ago

Asher was fatally injured, in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.

Uh, sure it was "unprovoked". Dude was just out there minding his own business and out of nowhere the Buffalo jumped out of bushes and attacked him.

I think it only fair that as the victor in the fight, the Buffalo should inherit this guy's millions.

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 60 points 3 weeks ago

also his head framed as a trophy

[-] lukaro@lemmy.zip 88 points 3 weeks ago

Is the bull okay?

[-] allywilson@lemmy.ml 67 points 3 weeks ago

Where's the photo of him being propped up to face the camera with a stick?

[-] Fives@discuss.online 61 points 3 weeks ago

Hunting animals for trophies and prestige is straight-up fuckery and should be banned everywhere.

Fuck trophy hunters.

Sorry you lost your dad.

[-] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 weeks ago

A lot of those hunts are actually part of conservation efforts to cull older males who are stopping the younger ones from mating, and the money goes towards conservation.

[-] teohhanhui@lemmy.world 26 points 3 weeks ago

Looks like the older male got culled in this case lmao

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

He could have donated a million dollars to conservation and hired a local conservation officer perform the culling. Instead he acted out his disgusting instinct to murder animals for fun (not for food and not for conservation).

Local hunters culling deer is fine. It needs to happen since humans have removed predators. People traveling to kill animals is them going out of their way to kill beautiful things for fun.

[-] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 11 points 3 weeks ago

People getting their rocks off and pretending that they're engaging in a selfless pursuit. Keeping pieces of animals they/their handler killed, to remind them of what a good conservationist they are.

It's not that the effect can't be good when properly researched and regulated. It's that I've simply got no respect nor sympathy for anyone who would find trophy hunting to be a fun activity worth paying for. Fuck 'em. If they cared about conservation, they could donate money to that effort. They want to kill animals for sport, that's their primary motivation.

Unprovoked

Unprovoked?! The guy was about to kill the buffalo. That was self defense.

[-] neons@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago

Darwinism works all ways. If we kill the harmless animals, we're directly breeding more aggressive ones that will attack "unprovoked" because that's what saved their lives.

[-] Hobo@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

That may be the case, but African Buffalo are like one of the most dangerous animals to humans on the planet. They have long had the nickname of "Black Death" and "Widowmaker" by the locals because they are so aggressive. The bachelor buffalo (older males that don't travel with a herd anymore) are known to be the most dangerous. From the description that's what it sounds like they were tracking. So one of those dudes killing the shit out of someone isn't exactly uncommon even historically.

Some cracker ass rich dude hunting them and then being killed by one is kind of fucking hilarious. Can you imagine this dipshit thinking that a buffalo wouldn't trample the shit out of him cause his bank account had a bunch of 0's? I just imagine him turning around as he's being charged at and yelling, "You can't do this I have money!"

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 47 points 3 weeks ago

Finally some good news in this dystopian fucked up world.

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 44 points 3 weeks ago

Asher Watkins, 52, was tracking a 1.3 tonne Cape Buffalo bull, known as the Black Death, in the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession on Sunday when it suddenly charged at him at 35mph.

I don't know why, but j really enjoyed all the numbers in this article. The speed that the buffalo was going when it smashed into him is a detail that would be left out of most articles. But knowing that it was going 35mph makes it very impressive.

[-] Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 weeks ago

Man this descriptive title for the Bull makes me see why Monster Hunter and Xenoblade appeal to so many. We have real life tyrant animals that have fucking bounties on their heads and names like "Black Death" that have killed even the best travelers. Video games are real 🥹

[-] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago

Exactly. We get to play those games without the real world ecological catastrophe that is big game hunting.

and nothing of value was lost

[-] Grizzlyboy@lemmy.zip 35 points 3 weeks ago

There are a lot oh scummy people, but trophy hunters are one of the worst. Traveling around the word just to kill rare and endangered animals, and brag about it. Those monsters deserve to lose out on existence.

Good. Love to see it. 10/10 do it again.

[-] Babalugats@feddit.uk 12 points 3 weeks ago

The only truly sad thing about this, is that a lot of hunters are going to sign up to go there to kill that bull.

[-] rayyy@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago
[-] d00phy@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

When the leopards are otherwise occupied, the bulls take up the slack!

As unlikable as this fellow may be, hunters are generally some of the strongest advocates for environmental protection.

They generally aren't completely stupid and they know that their hobby depends on a thriving ecosystem so they tend to take action to preserve them.
