Apparently Microsoft views success as Quarterly Profits, and long term planning for the future has taken a backseat.

They've been floundering for a while. Eliminating jobs only guarantees they'll flounder even longer.

~1,900 jobs today, even. :/

gotta make sure phil spencer gets his bonus.

Even when people were saying that MS turned a new leaf and that they are better at managing all the studios that they buy, and that they’ll make more better games for Game Pass to be a success, I knew that this was coming. Microsoft has been nothing but consistent in this one thing: it’ll pivot hard in one direction, pour tons of green into it, hire the best people, and then fire everyone and abandon the idea forever.

Zune, Windows Phones, Kinect, and now I guess XBOX. Well, looks like it lived long enough.

Eliminating 9,000 jobs only guarantees they’ll flounder even longer.

Maybe. Microsoft's biggest revenue stream has historically been government contracts. I don't see that failing them anytime in the next decade.

But retail consumer spending? That's something that could seriously take a few hits in the next big downturn. I can see a company putting its finger to the wind and betting a '08 style recession will kill the market for console gaming in another two or three years.

This is the likely scenario. They are predicting an incredibly unpredictable consumer market in the next 4-8 years but a very predictable defense industry market in that time.

Well now my name has some baggage

Honestly, its probably a good thing they canceled it. They were going to butcher that perfect game.

But also FYI, Perfect Dark is available on Nintendo Switch Online as a Nintendo 64 +17 Mature title, along with Turok and Turok 2

The best way to play it is with mouse & KB using the 1964 emulator GEPD version, imo.

Didn't know about that. I'll have to check it out.

[-] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

It’s great! But there are some frustrating parts in the game like escort missions. Or janky psychics where a wall don’t blow up because, well I don’t know. It just didn’t one time.

[-] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Is it a good port? I really enjoy turok 2 on PS4, would love to play perfect dark on something better than an N64.

[-] Denjin@lemmings.world 1 points 1 month ago

You should play the Project64 GEPD project.

A customised emulator setup specifically to run Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark in 60fps, widescreen support, keyboard and mouse controls, support for HD texture packs.

IMHO it's the definitive way to experience these games on modern hardware. I've tried running both on my steam deck and the controls just don't translate well to a comfortable experience so prefer this.

[-] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Sorry. Im not sure what would make it a good or bad port. Im not familiar with what the differences would be.

It was originally released on N64 and the Switch Online N64 mode seems fine. It feels like the original game.

[-] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah, can see that question is vague. Lots of remakes / remasters in recent years, some amazing, and some garbage. Didnt want to invest in this and be pissed off about it.

Watched a few youtube reviews and sounds like something I'd enjoy.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago

I'm sorry.....can we take a minute here to point out that the head of XBOX is named "Matt Booty"? No? Just me?

[-] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

My niece giggled at that during the Minecraft credits

[-] RadioFreeArabia@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

To hold the windows OS monopoly ig

[-] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 month ago

It feels like they just announced it? Why did they even bother?

[-] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 19 points 1 month ago

I hate to tell you this, but they announced it at TGA in 2020...which was 5 years ago.

[-] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

But wait….that would be I’m almost 40. Omg you’re right. Time moves too quickly!

[-] garretble@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

At least they can use that money they saved for checks notes powering CoPilot no one is asking for.

[-] xkbx@startrek.website 14 points 1 month ago

@PerfectDark@lemmy.world I WON’T LET THEM CANCEL YOU

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Well, they are very successful at canceling things!

[-] MacStache@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago
