There better be a fucking explanation. To roll over, especially after the most recent 51st state bullshit? You better have a good goddamn reason.

[-] walktheplank@lemmy.world 47 points 1 week ago

The explanation is money. Now let's stop this shit. Time to get organized. Start or join a protest group. Let's not wait until it's too late like south of us.

I'm guessing the reason is supply management on dairy.

There's a large rural Quebecois voting block that really likes supply management. By dropping the DST, Carney can cede something to Trump without pissing them off. The DST doesn't have the same constituency, so it'll hurt the LPC less during the next election.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 51 points 1 week ago

Well, surely just one little capitulation will win Trump's favour, and not sent him the message that Canada's weak and he should push for more, right?

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago

CACO, I guess XD

No, Europe’s just the same

[-] sbv@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 week ago

Last month, the U.S. and Britain announced a trade deal related to a range of products. But Britain’s 2-per-cent DST was not affected.

In a statement at the time, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the U.S. “is disappointed that Britain was unwilling to agree to fully address its discriminatory Digital Services Tax.”

Britain kept theirs. They'd probably argue that they aren't European, but y'know.

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 45 points 1 week ago

This is not what I voted for. What the fuck?

[-] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 41 points 1 week ago

You voted for Liberals. Their only persistent trait is lying to the public about who they are and then siding with big business once elected.

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

Don't forget tgat the government of Canada was created to protect the interests of a blanket retailer. A part of our heritage™

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

And I don't think cons would have been any better.

[-] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Why do people constantly bring this up as if it was a valid argument? Of course the Conservatives wouldn't have been better. No one is saying that they would have. FFS you have other options.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

It's hard to vote in a principled way knowing that it will lead to one more Conservative MP. We are in a bind with this electoral system, and of course the Liberals benefit most from it so will never change it.

That said, if the Liberals keep acting enough like Conservatives that people don't see a significant difference between their policies, it could undermine strategic voting and open the door to other parties.

[-] danielquinn@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Exactly this. I came to this conclusion a long time ago, so I guess it's nice to see others coming around to it.

[-] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I sincerely hope you learn something from this. This is the Liberal m.o. and has been for years. They're a big business party, and don't have typical Canadian's interests at heart. Their most redeeming feature is that they're not the Cons.

If you actually care about bettering the lives of typical Canadians, then look at what parties have track records of getting results. (Hint: A lot of Canadians just got dental care.)

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

PP didn't seem like a good choice to me. And there was no way any other party had a shot.

You can't really stand up to power by voting, unfortunately. All your choices are just different ways of giving these jackals power with more or fewer steps.

I hope there are local groups and organizations where you're at that you can join to start to organize a grassroots movement.

Listen, Canadians, you don't need those tariffs-shmariffs. Just stop buying US shit. That's it. No matter if that is alcohol or software. Stop buying it. And tariffs become just a stupid number for stupid Trump to drool upon.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago

Just stop buying US shit.

Those of us who give a damn are already doing that as much as possible.

Unfortunately the 1000 pound gorilla that is the USA had taken over some parts of our economy to the point where there is no way to avoid them completely.

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Buying stuff from the US isn't affected by US tariffs!?

Tariffs would be when you sell things to the US, and even then you're not the one paying them, it's just the US government charging its citizens extra to buy things

I know it's tough to wrap one's head around an idea so fervently championed yet obviously self-defeating XD

[-] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 3 points 1 week ago

No, the concept is trivial. I just point out that the coefficient isn't important if the value is zero. And Canadians can make it zero at least at one direction.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 week ago

[-] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

It will be left to Canadians to do the poop he can’t.

[-] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

So all Canadians are complete pussies? I can’t see how this isn’t a hard fact now

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Ah yes because the prime minister or president of a country represents the character of every single person in that county.

Guess that means all Americans are egotistic psychopaths.

[-] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

That is correct yes

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Guess that means all Americans are egotistic psychopaths.

[-] Stamets@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'll never vote for a Liberal candidate again for as long as I live, regardless of ABC. I don't give a fuck what the threat is. They're effectively Democrats. Fundamentally worthless from soul to spine.

[-] Enkers@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That's what I said after they fucked us on electoral reform. Being a principled voter is the correct pragmatic decision in the long term.

ABC results in US two-party system.

[-] UncleGrandPa@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Never ever ever attempt to appease trump.

It will not work. He will never admit when he is wrong

And he is totally untrustworthy and will NOT keep his side of any deal

[-] snoons@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 week ago
[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 week ago

Wtf? There better be a good reason why.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Because we entrusted our country to a person that cares about one bottom line only and doesn't actually give a fuck about telling trump to piss off?

[-] sbv@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Supply management on dairy. The yanks have hated that for a while, but there's a bunch of Quebecois dairy farmers who really like it. I'm guessing that Carney is giving up the DST since it doesn't have a constituency - if that allows him to keep supply management on dairy, it'll be easier to keep Quebec's support during the next election.

Cowardly. Infuriating. Pathetic. 1 term Carney - fool does understand why he was elected. I’m so pissed. Boycott harder.

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago

Disturbing, as this was a significant revenue raiser that could help with those disenfranchised through tariffs, or fund the absurd destruction of Canada through 200% military spending increase. Continued US military alliance signals further capitulation, but just as attack on Iran was apparent end of war through victory declaration, there may be a quick return to status quo. OTOH, complete subjugation may be more likely.
