Yeah well tell that to the stock market. It closed Friday at 285 and has done nothing but go up all week.

One thing these quarterlies have proven is that anyone still holding Tesla stock is, at this point, either holding so little that they can treat it as a meaningless gamble, or a full on cultist.

The two things that consistently get people to buy more TSLA are Elon repeating obvious lies about features that they will absolutely not deliver, and Elon promising to do more micromanaging of a company that desparately needs less of his micromanaging. There is nothing rational or intelligent about that behaviour. It's a group of people going long on outcomes that are unsupported by all available evidence.

But a stock price staying high will only put off total systemic collapse, it will not prevent it. At some point a company does have to sell products at a profit. Even the South Seas Company failed eventually.

If you have a 401k you are probably a holder of Tesla stock since it's in the index funds.

This is one of the bigger problems with the current stock market where investment decisions for a huge amount of the capital in the market is being made mechanically by looking only at the market capitalization of the company. We end up in a hyperreal situation where if you pump hard enough on a stock you can basically "manifest" a blue-chip label on it and then leverage everyone's retirement accounts to keep it

It defies reason, doesn’t it! But there are always suckers left holding the bag when reality sets it. Trumpism, like other forms of fascism, is a kind of mass insanity. He somehow convinced 75M rubes to vote for him when his disastrous first term was already in the history books. Maybe it’s not surprising that when Trump puts commerce secretary Lutnick on TV to tell his followers to buy tesla, they listen. At some point, though, they will wake up. I hope it doesn’t take a world war this time.

He can save Tesla by leaving Tesla.

[-] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 63 points 1 day ago

Nope. The only way he can save Tesla is if he left Tesla and sold all his Tesla shares.

[-] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 72 points 1 day ago

Tesla is a ruined brand. Even if he sold his shares, many people will never forgive the other shareholders for standing by a Nazi as he demolished American democracy. I will never buy anything from Tesla as long as i live, and i was once part of his key market: i had intentions to buy a powerwall, a solar roof, and a car. People always say that Volkswagen got free from its Nazi roots; I say, not while Hitler wore his brain on the inside.

[-] Kit 19 points 1 day ago

Agreed, the brand is forever tarnished in my eyes and I sold all of my stock in the company. I can't imagine that Tesla will survive even 10 more years in car production. Their charging network will probably stand for some time, though, as there's sadly no major players stepping up.

[-] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

It's arguably not any better but isn't Walmart about to fire up a charging network?

[-] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

People always say that Volkswagen got free from its Nazi roots; I say, not while Hitler wore his brain on the inside.

You can't hold a grudge forever though. There came a time when none of Volkwagen's employees or officers were around during the 3rd Reich, and all of the assets dating back from that era got replaced completely, making the Volkswagen brand name the only carryover from the Hitler era.

My Dad used to go vacationing in Southern France way back when. When he was on the beach, he would scream and shout at older Germans, calling them Nazis and telling them to go home. But he never did that with younger Germans. When we kids asked him why he only hated older Germans so much, he told us "The kids who were born after the liberation didn't do anything. Why would I hate them?" - Made sense to us.

It’s true - anyone born after Trumpism is over and musk and the gang are long dead will have the luxury of seeing Tesla as just another company. Given Tesla’s business fundamentals as evidenced by the last earnings report, though, i doubt it will still be a going concern.

[-] BlueLineBae@midwest.social 9 points 1 day ago

Hate to say it, but lots of people still buy VW even when the current CEO is still sympathetic to Nazis. Unfortunately Tesla will be fine.

[-] takeda@lemm.ee 13 points 1 day ago

Can you provide source on the VW CEO being sympathetic to Nazis?

[-] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Idk about the current CEO, but the first one for sure was

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago

And like all of Japan and all of Italy and all of Germany. They were on opposite sides in a war. There are degrees of support, ut part of the process of ending war is moving forward without constant grudge holding. Certainly, hold those responsible that committed heinous crimes, but we don’t put entire populations and all their industry in jail.

VW currently is still doing terrible things, but no more than other companies. Elon is magnitudes worse on many fronts.

[-] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 2 points 20 hours ago

It was a joke. I was referring to the fact that VW was literally created by Nazis before being resurrected after WWII.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I'm not sure he can sell his shares, he was using them for collateral to buy X. Since he sold X though, I'm not sure if that's still true.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

he sold twitter to a company he owns, didn't he?

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 1 points 20 hours ago

But doesn't that take him to being outside the loan? I don't know enough about evil billionaire money shenanigans.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 2 points 20 hours ago

i honestly have no idea how debt juggling works. it seems like it should be hella illegal, but then i also look at the humans around me and want them to thrive and be happy. i don't see my fellows as being rubes i can exploit

[-] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I'm okay with him keeping the shares as long as they are non-voting shares and he is barred from contacting any board member. Yes, that includes personal friends and family. Those are the requirements to keep them.

[-] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago

I'm not: if he has shares, he gets to profit from Tesla's success. Worse: in your scenario, Tesla might do better and he might profit even more.

[-] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Well that's never going to happen. There is no way to force him to sell those shares, or take them from him without a premium where he makes even more.

At least my suggestion is plausible.

[-] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah you're right, it's not going to happen.

My point was, while your suggestion is indeed plausible, it won't save Tesla: would-be EV buyers who give Tesla a pass don't do it because Musk is on the board or runs the company, they do it because they don't want to give their money to a fucking Nazi.

[-] dan00@lemm.ee 11 points 1 day ago

Nobody can save tesla. Nobody should save him. I wish from the bottom of my hearts to piss on his grave as soon as possible.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

Maybe he could save it by leaving this earth, permanently.

[-] glitch1985@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago
[-] LinkOpensChest_wav 3 points 1 day ago

He should try it and see if it works

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

By leaving the mortal coil

Shut up. Let him think he can. Get him the fuck away from our government. IDGAF if he actually manages to save Tesla or will inevitably be its downfall. But either way, don't discourage him from trying lest he keep his focus on destroying our systems is governance from the inside. Him being gone probably won't save anything in the long run, but it sure as shit won't help to keep him here.

[-] Kurious84@eviltoast.org 17 points 1 day ago

He really does need to be deported. Eventually they'll find out that they let russia into sensitive gov systems and maybe go to jail. That would be good for him. He kind of needs to be protected from himself.

[-] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Good. Let it fail along with him.

I’m just so entertained by this entire dynamic
