I'm sure you'll be fine and it'll be even better when the system is rewritten in a month, you won't be lost or declared dead.

Just sit back and enjoy what you voted for.

Republicans back in the day: Social Security is going to collapse! We need to fix it. Not enough money for Americans when they retire.

Republicans now: Fuck Social Security! The Billionaires told us to collapse it. They informed us we don’t need it.

[-] exixx@lemmy.world 89 points 1 day ago

Zero sympathy for the only state that went 100% to Trump. You literally asked for this, pray to your fucking orange god to save you

[-] Reyali@lemm.ee 18 points 1 day ago

OK had 66.2% vote for Trump. Idaho, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming were all higher than that.

So what do you mean by “only state” and “100%”? I’m confused by your comment.

[-] redundantgrouch@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago

I'm guessing they mean 100% of counties in Oklahoma went to Trump.

[-] Reyali@lemm.ee 10 points 1 day ago

Ah, ok. Looks like West Virginia also had 100% of counties go for Trump, so “only” is still not right, but at least that makes more sense.

[-] exixx@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

The republicans carried every county

[-] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 55 points 1 day ago

I’m less worried about the closure of offices than Musk thinking he can modernize the SSA administration’s computer systems in 3 months. None of his lackeys have ever worked on anything of this scale/complexity and I’m pretty sure none of them know COBOL since they’re apparently mostly around 25. (And retired COBOL experts likely don’t know more modern languages well enough to translate.)

Don’t get me wrong, the public and private sectors should modernize aging, critical systems that use code written in languages almost no one under 60 has learned, much less mastered. But 3 months probably isn’t even enough time to get through the planning and hiring stage of a project like this. If it were cheap and easy to update those systems, it’d have been done already.

[-] thedeadwalking4242@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

The goal is to break it

[-] limer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago

It’s a planned disabling of ss.

The trepidation of news sources, or even most social media, to call it deliberate sabotage, gives them cover.

The majority of the American public does not deal at all with this level of tech. And the small percentage of people who understand can not influence anything.

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 2 points 1 day ago

How hard can it be? Import user list from DB, implement the calculate_pension method, integrate with paypall to send the money and you're done. 1 month of work, 1 month for testing and 1 month to celebrate success.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Even if you had the very best experts that knew COBOL and some "modern" language, along with all the right competent supporting staff (documentation, analysts, qa, ops) AND they had skilled, experienced and competent management overseeing it, doing something like that in months is just probably very, very difficult, if not impossible.

If you look back over the respected literature (which means sidestep the hot-take Youtube techfluencers going gaga over rather pedestrian things in languages and tools and frameworks and so on - these dingalings are typically so far up their own rear-ends and likely to just make the same old mistakes already documented in books like Mythical Man-Month and many probably won't read it because they think it's about older systems, therefore irrelevant.) I doubt you'd find much support for a claim that it could be done.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

and one of them is a son/daughter of a KGB agent too.

Also, I think we are about to watch fElon and his child prodigies Whiz on the Electric Chesterton Fence to mix up two metaphors....

Alright I'm just gonna say it. Yes I know a lot of people who voted for Kamala will be hurt to. It will hurt my parents, my grandparents, etc.

But it is a goddamn lie if I say I'm not excited about these people having their faces eaten. This is what stupidity gets you. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Fuck around and find out.

You fuckers all thought you were better than LGBTQ+, Black people, immigrants, union members, etc. Now you learn that nope, all of your teeth are just a cheap source of aquarium gravel.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

I realize you're worked up, and I hope those who voted for the 🐆 🐆 🐆 suffer the most (very possible given that food bank users are mostly white etc) and actually turn their politics to the left (sadly much less likely, as they are idiots).

But it's Kamala not Kalama, and that sentence ends with too, not to.

[-] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'll fix the name, but I refuse to fix a typo in "to".

In-fact, i like to Imagine that using the wrong grammer and spelling tends to cause phsychical pain to grammer nazis. Your wasting you're time correcting someones mistakes for no good reason

(Edit: to make it worse

[-] ngdev@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago

lol so this is your reaction to making a mistake and having it pointed out? child

[-] Speculater@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

"I refuse to accept constructive feedback and will spend a lot more energy and thought to make that clear."

I'm sure they're fun to work with.

Eh, at least they put some effort into it.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

Love the edit, and respect the attitude. The schoolmarm in me is fine with sarcastic choices. Appreciate your correcting the name, shows you didn't misspell it to insult her.

[-] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 42 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Delays could be disastrous for many Americans. In one study, 42% of Americans aged 65-plus said they wouldn’t be able to afford basic necessities like food without their monthly check.

There are approximately 60 million Americans aged 65 and over.

42% of that is about 25 million people.

... And thats not counting those on Disability, SSDI, like myself.

Thats another roughly 11 million people, under 65, disabled and unable to work due to serious, debilitating injuries or medical conditions.

If these idiots actually do this, and fuck it up as much as they are likely to, we're looking at something approximating 5% to 10% of the country becoming homeless within months ... and then likely starve to death or die of exposure, we're talking about the eldery and disabled here.

... This would effectively be somewhere between, or comparable to, the varying estimates of avoidable deaths of Holodomor or the famine during the Great Leap Forward.

[-] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 32 points 1 day ago

The suffering is the point.

[-] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, my parents are hardcore preppers, for all the wrong reasons. For the longest time, it was the “Biden is going to roll tanks down the streets” type of prepping. But now I’m seeing the prepping in a new light, because it could 100% turn into a full blown “nobody can afford soup, and the government is actively dismantling the soup kitchens while forcing people onto the streets” economy.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 45 points 1 day ago

Article is like, didn't make enough to save for retirement? How about you start saving now?

Retirement in America is going to involve cat food for many.

[-] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago

No need to be alarmist about it. They can just apply for SNAP benef- oh wait nevermind. But there's still plenty of support for food banks which will- oh, right. But... uh, I'm sure they'll be fine if they have 401k or something, stocks are up and food prices are down again.... right?

[*whispering with unseen person*]

Really? Oh! Well shit.

[-] hydrashok@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 day ago

You think they’ll be able to afford cat food? lol

[-] ChristmasApe@discuss.online 4 points 1 day ago

Some may end up as cat food.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

cats will eat thier owners eventually if they die.

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

maybe go to a adoption/ shelter for food.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Have you seen how expensive cat food is now?

They better get good at dumpster diving.

[-] Steve@startrek.website 11 points 1 day ago

Dumpsters are full of the leftovers from a well functioning supply chain…

Yeah, lots of folks don’t realize that cat and dog food are required to be fit for human consumption… Not because of accidental “toddler found the bag of dog food” scenarios, but because of the “destitute people on social security can’t afford anything better” scenarios.

[-] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I don't understand the cat food thing. A can of cat food is usually the same cost or higher as a can of cheap tuna or other canned meat. You're eating cat food for no reason!

[-] venotic@kbin.melroy.org 28 points 1 day ago

Sorry not sorry, you wanted this, you got it. You voted wrong over FUCKING EGGS!

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 16 points 1 day ago

If it makes you feel any better, it was mostly about hating people who were different ✨

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, it was about getting the niCLANGers, er, I mean, getting the DEIers.

[-] BlackSheep@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Oh no!! Anyways…

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 17 points 1 day ago

Hey, it's the thing we said was going to happen!!?! Who would have thought we were right!!!

[-] WHARRGARBL@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It’ll end up somehow being blamed on Dems. Remembering the time Congress overrode Obama’s JASTA veto, then the GOP immediately blamed Obama for not warning them harder.

[-] Aliktren@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

You won, get over it.

[-] krebssteven@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Well well well, if that isn’t the consequences of your choices coming around to bite you in the ass. I am well aware that the individuals suffering are not individually to be blamed but I have zero sympathy in this particular case.

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Surprised no one has put the "Have the day you voted for 🌈" image up yet.

Moneywise. There are like 5 or 6 links to it in the text, starting from halfway down the "article," and it starts to get really blatant when it starts talking directly to you, the reader. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire thing was written by AI.

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

Oh weird. I can't get it to load fully so I can't tell, but I don't doubt it. I was just curious what company would possibly want their product associated with this.

[-] xyzzy@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The framing is really gross as well. Facing a future without Social Security? Try saving for retirement with Moneywise...

They just don't say the company directly in the calls to action because it's likely intended mainly to boost their search engine rankings. Hence the number of links...

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago

Yea, I didn't bother to futz with my settings to make it load, but just based off the headline I couldn't imagine it being a paid article, but that tracks honestly. These people have no sense of decency or propriety. What happened to tact and shame lol. It's gross.
