Shouldn't the free market force pay to increase, thereby drawing more adults to the area?

The part that bothers me the most about this is how the re-institution of child labor points to the damnable confusion of moral, ethical, and legal, activity. Clearly this isn't moral or ethical, but it is legal. So, undoubtedly some will point at the law and reassure themselves and others that this alone makes it okay to do. While there's no stopping people that lack moral fiber to do the right thing, it's everyone else that decides on the wrong side of moral and ethical conflict that make this so much worse.

On another note: how does one effectively boycott this behavior? No doubt, a lot of this labor will happen sight-unseen.

Hey! Let's take a selfie with Mikey! He's so small this year, let's all sit together around him! I remember as a kid Mikey was so big!

Kids aren't going to work these stupid ass jobs. And if they are working a hotel, they aren't going to give a fuck if some stick up their ass tourist gets upset, they'll just flip the person off and walk out.

Teenagers aren't going to fucking fill these positions DeSantis is pitching. Migrants work it because they've got a need to do the work. A lot of teenagers work jobs because they'd like a little extra cash, but outside, they give flying fuck. Hell, the biggest fucking reason teens got jobs in the first place to fund their car is falling apart as more teens just skip the whole driving thing or start way later in life driving.

DeSantis is living in some yesteryear daydream.

This reminded me of a joke I heard one time. "You know how they always say that aliens built the pyramids in Egypt? This is how you know Mexicans are the best workers in history. There are also pyramids in Mexico. Nobody questions who built those."

Andrew Shultz. Very insightful and culturally savvy comedian.

Being Mexican does not impact work ethic at all.

I would recommend you reevaluate your bias

[-] Nythos@sh.itjust.works 22 points 3 days ago

Do you just go around trying to find things to be offended at?

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I don't like it when people make blatant statements. We are all humans in the end and saying all Mexicans work hard is categorizing a very large group of people. Many due work hard but that's not because they are Mexican. Immigrants some other groups of people tend to be the hard workers.

This is a watered down version of all Mexicans are drug dealers. Some certainty are but that's not because they are Mexican.

Are you saying Mexicans are lazy? Wow. That's a terrible take!

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I'm saying it is probably biased to say ever single Mexican somehow works hard or is lazy. Everyone is there own person.

Treat people like people and don't let there background or skin color dictate your expectations.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 29 points 3 days ago

Maybe that's how it is now in most cases, but in the past children were made to support the family financially. And it probably already works like that for the poorest in the US. The Republicans want to go back to that past. In Arkansas they legalised children working in abbatoirs, I can guarantee that none of those children are doing it for 'a little bit of pocket money'.

[-] tiramichu@lemm.ee 23 points 3 days ago

This is exactly it. By intentionally ensuring the working class live in poverty, this creates desperation, which means people will accept even worse conditions and even less pay to do terrible jobs - and their children, too.

This is simply the next step in what has already been a decades-long strategy of exploitation.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 8 points 3 days ago

Yep, there's probably already a bunch of children of illegal immigrants that are working to support their parents because their parents can't go out to work any more. Or even worse, their parents have been deported already and they're sending money abroad to support them.

[-] obinice@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago

When they're struggling to eat two meals a day and threatened with homelessness, they'll work and job they're given, no matter how awful.

You think the parents of yesteryear wanted to send their kids off to the workhouses, when they knew an education would be better for them, and safer than the workshops?

They didn't have a choice, because that's how their society was structured.

The USA is regressing in many small ways that taken together gave a big impact, it's not crazy to think that they're reaching a point where many families will be forced to have their kids work to make ends meet.

The kids aren't privileged, they don't have a choice, that's the point. If they choose not to work because they're moody teens, then they'll starve. That won't happen.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

You say that like teens have the willpower and emotional control to do any of this. Those teens will absolutely walk off jobs because somebody looked at them funny, and now they have beef. And it won't be until after they get into a fist fight and get fired that they'll realise that was a mistake. Teenagers aren't methodical plotting analysts that understand what they're doing. Their body is going through hormonal changes, and it affects them all differently. There is no plan with them. The plan is they saw another kid give them the finger and now they're about to come to blows. The fact that they're wearing work uniforms while doing it isn't part of the plan.
