Honestly? I just want a nice quiet posting somewhere that needs roadwork done. Germania's not that bad of a place. Decent people by and large.

That's why I signed on. To help. That's the whole POINT of the legion. We're professionals meant to enact Ceaser's Will. Some prefer the skirmishes and cutting down rabble, but.... I just want to build, and seeing folk happy to have decent road service from town to town makes all the rest worth it.

I mean... what did you think i signed up for, the pay? Please... The money has been chipped and clipped so much that coinage isn't worth itself anymore.

So, if things do go to hell? I'm gonna work with who I can to make sure my little corner of things is a little less unstable. S'all any of us can do.

Someone fell for the imperialist propaganda.

[-] singletona@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

My focus is mostly on the community I'm in. If I thought the tribals could do a better job I'd be in favor of them. However, I don't think they are the best horse for the race.

I don't know .... I can't read :(

I can't wait for the Roman Empire to collapse. The climate is changing, rural people are poor and discontent. It's all bullshit and we've been sold a lie by the imperial elites When they finally stop manipulating our local economy we can bring manufacturing back to Britain.

(Seriously though, manufacturing collapsed, but peasant skeletons got healthier in the centuries after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. It makes you wonder.)

[-] Venator@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 day ago

Did all the unhealthy peasants die leaving only the healthy ones? (IDK I'm not a peasant skeleton)

[-] DaCrazyJamez@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago

Being Germanic, I have a good feeling about this

[-] remotelove@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Dunno why. The Roman Empire will be going strong for at least another 1000 years, thanks to the invention of lead water pipes.

Yeah .... what a bunch of dummies ... they should have made them out of plastic ... actually make everything out of plastic

Have you gone mad? Do you know what VOCs can do to you?

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Lead is often a good barrier against VOCs

We've started the Middle Ages? You mean all that awfulness was just the Beginning Ages? Blimey.

[-] Protoknuckles@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Man, I'm just hoping my crops grow right.

[-] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Our 2 young Oxen should be strong enough this year to carry the plough on their own, so old Till can go to the Butcher. Everything is already planed, after lent is over and the tithes are paid, I'll supply another 5th for a wedding, the rest is stored for next winter.

[-] singletona@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It's not much, but it's honest work. Good man.

The world will end in 499 and I am looking forward to the rapture.

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

I'm fucken excited for King Leotychidas to have his soul razed.

[-] singletona@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Raised up, or razed in fire?

[-] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

The Spanish haven't shown up yet. It's just tribe vs. tribe right now and we're feeling warlike, strong and fit, it's going to be a great year!

It’s a scary time to a leggionaire. I fear the empire is crumbling.

[-] spittingimage@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

The emperor has been buying Christian slaves by the hundreds. Surely the Coliseum floor will run red with blood!

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

The Internet in Ancient Times

Welcome to the stone age... or the bronze age... or the iron age... heck, anything with an 'age' is welcome, except our modern age or any ages to come.

This is about what the internet was like thousands of years ago back when it all started. Like when Darius the Great hired mercenaries via Craigslist or when Egypt invented emojis.

CODE OF LAWS

1 - Be civil. No name calling, no fighting, keep your flint hand axes inside your leather pouches at all times.

2 - Keep the AI stuff to a minimum. It gets annoying and old fashioned memes are more fun for everyone.

3 - None of this newfangled modern 21st century nonsense. We don't even know what "21st century" means.

4 - No porn/explicit content. The king is sensitive about these things.

5 - No lemmy.world TOS violations will be tolerated. So there.

6 - There is no ~~rule~~ law 6.

Laws of justice which Hammurabi, the wise king, established. A righteous law, and pious statute did he teach the land. Hammurabi, the protecting king am I. I have not withdrawn myself from the men, whom Bel gave to me, the rule over whom Marduk gave to me, I was not negligent, but I made them a peaceful abiding-place. I expounded all great difficulties, I made the light shine upon them. With the mighty weapons which Zamama and Ishtar entrusted to me, with the keen vision with which Ea endowed me, with the wisdom that Marduk gave me, I have uprooted the enemy above and below (in north and south), subdued the earth, brought prosperity to the land, guaranteed security to the inhabitants in their homes; a disturber was not permitted. The great gods have called me, I am the salvation-bearing shepherd, whose staff is straight, the good shadow that is spread over my city; on my breast I cherish the inhabitants of the land of Sumer and Akkad; in my shelter I have let them repose in peace; in my deep wisdom have I enclosed them. That the strong might not injure the weak, in order to protect the widows and orphans, I have in Babylon the city where Anu and Bel raise high their head, in E-Sagil, the Temple, whose foundations stand firm as heaven and earth, in order to bespeak justice in the land, to settle all disputes, and heal all injuries, set up these my precious words, written upon my memorial stone, before the image of me, as king of righteousness.
