Could just pick up the phone... 🙄

[-] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago

Seriously, it is the lowest-latency and highest-bandwidth communication method we have, when used appropriately.

[-] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Am I doing this right? It's a little slow.

[-] Redredme@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

I don't get this. Y'all should talk to a psychologist. Its a goddamn mobile phone. If you don't want to use a device's primary function maybe you should use something else to browse porn.

And if talking to people makes you anxious and makes you feel violated or makes it feel like someone is disrespecting your private bubble...

You should go out more. Without that gd device in your pocket because clearly, obviously to everyone else but you that device is hampering you, limiting you even hurting you.

This is crazy.

[-] rockerface@lemm.ee 16 points 2 days ago

Just because it's normalized doesn't mean it should be. Several decades ago it used to be perfectly normal and polite to smoke in restaurants next to strangers.

Just because making calls is one of the functions of the device in my hands doesn't mean it's its primary function.

If you disagree with the take that unplanned phone calls without an emergency are invasive, imagine this comment is a phone call and you need to answer as soon as I post it, otherwise I'll be quite upset with you not responding.

[-] valentinesmith 18 points 2 days ago

I think your comment reads quite combative.

I think with the context of the Meme, yes there are some people who call you and you just know its gonna be a huge annoying phone call that you should just avoid and text the person after because some people just wanna talk your ears off.

I dunno if we have to do the: omg millenials/gen alpha is too phone anxious thing.

And sure its called a mobile phone, but as an argument that feels somewhat pedantic nowadays. Primarily its a mobile internet connected computer nowadays I would say. I use the camera/ texting/ social media functions way more than the real phone capabilities. Maybe thats different for you but I don’t think it’s uncommon that its one of the lesser used functions.

Sure if people are too anxious to pick up the phone and it negatively impacts their life they should get help for it. I don’t think we should shame them in that case though. It feels to me like shaming depressed people when they cannot find the energy to shower, which I would similarly feel is inadequate input.

[-] abbadon420@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Not trying to blame anyone or "omg millenials", but it's an actual issue. It's not just the "fear of phone calls", but it's a deeper rooted change in the way we communicate and how it's becoming less personal and organic. https://psychology-spot.com/silent-generation-characteristics/

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

I never wanted a cell phone in the first place. I just needed one when my house burned down. If it were up to me, they would never have existed, and the pay phones would still work. Don't you remember how nice going to the movies used to be?

Hell yeah I should go out more. While I'm out, I want you to leave a message on my answering machine that I will ignore if it doesn't start with a number.

[-] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago

In this case I think it stands for gosh dang

[-] gerryflap@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago

Mood. Someone has been calling me 3 times in the past days and I don't know who. They left one accidental voice mail that didn't help and didn't text or anything. I'm not going to pick up the phone, guess I'll text them if they try again.

I only accept phone calls from people I know (when other means of communication wouldn't be practical) or when I've specifically agreed to call with someone unknown (like the doctor or something).

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

As much as I understand not wanting to talk on the phone, I don't get this mindset. Why not just answer it to find out who they are and what they want so you can make a more informed decision about whether you care what they want? You can always just hang up if you decide you want to be doing something else. Or "something just came up, gotta go" and hang up. Why does it need to be such an ordeal in the first place?

[-] InputZero@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Because 9 times out of 10 it's a spam call and picking up marks your number as active so it gets called more often. It makes looking for a job so much worse because I have to answer almost every call. Most are spam calls but I can't afford to miss an employer calling.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I haven't had that experience with spam/scam calls. Mind you, I'm in Canada and the do not call list has teeth here, though that only applies to spam. But spam/scam call frequency doesn't appear to be correlated at all with how recently I've answered another call.

[-] Kitathalla@lemy.lol 5 points 1 day ago

And then I call you again immediately, because I don't call unless it's a very time-sensitive matter... but that's probably why the meme isn't referencing me in the first place.

[-] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, anyone I know who is calling is doing so because it's time-sensitive. All of my friends should know that of me as well. Anyone like the person in the meme would not be a friend of mine.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Me, explaining to my mother for the 754th time that I would need to check my calendar to answer her question, and that I am in public so I can't do that while talking on the phone.

[-] danekrae@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Friends and family must feel real lucky to have you in their lives.

[-] rockerface@lemm.ee 41 points 2 days ago

Usually friends and family actually care about respecting the wishes of the person they're trying to contact. That concept might be unfamiliar to you.

[-] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Nah you're 100% in the wrong here, and it's wild that you bring up respect, as if this attitude and behavior isn't incredibly disrespectful. Calling someone is literally not disrespectful. What the fuck is wrong with people

[-] LwL@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Not a single person in my life has ever had an issue with the fact that i prefer to be texted and reserve phone calls for more immediate issues. My time belongs to me and no one else so I have no obligation to answer people, and text is faster to parse for me and always has a protocol available if I need it later.

Calling someone isn't disrespectful. Calling someone that has made it clear they do not want to be called except for emergencies is. In my case I'd just mute all calls from them after it happens the second time.

[-] Cenotaph@mander.xyz 27 points 2 days ago

Isn't it? On a cell phone it demands that I drop what I'm doing at a moment's notice and respond to your inquiry. Unless it is something time-sensitive, the call probably should have been scheduled or a text message would have served the purpose without demanding an instant response

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah its like walking into a room without knocking, while im talking to someone and just screaming at the top of your lungs: "WE NEED TO TALK RIGHT NOW"

If you did that irl without a very good reason i would slap you.

[-] wieson@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

The phone rings, that's the knock. You can hang up for many reasons. Maybe it's the culture of 100% availability that's wrong, and not phoning.

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

You know you can say "I'm busy, I will call you back later."

Or you just dont pick up which has the same effect...

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

nope, befcause then the other person does not know that you plan on caling back

Maybe i dont plan on doing that. And i can always text them after.

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

If it's a person you like why not spent some words on the phone?

I seldom get called by persons i don't like, because why should they call me?

[-] rockerface@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

If it's a person I like, they'll likely share my view on the sudden phone calls.

And I'd rather plan for a call with a person I like so that I can have as much uninterrupted time to talk to them as I need.

I mean yeah, depends on who is calling ofcourse, but also im just in airplane mode 24/7 so not gonna happen anyways. The only time people can call me is if there is some kind of event we are going to that requires spontaneous planning.

[-] Grass@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

then you have say something along the lines of "sorry about that" and they are obligated to respond along the lines of "don't worry about it", then here is where I forget what the topic was with both people because my deteriorating mind does nothing but fail me these days.

[-] klemptor@startrek.website 16 points 2 days ago

Right? IMO it's rude to just call someone out of the blue and expect that they'll be able to drop everything to chat with you.

Unfortunately, my mom loves to call unannounced, and because my parents are getting older I feel the need to answer in case something's wrong.

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

Phone rings

"Hi, do you have time for the call now?"

"No, Im busy right now, I will call you back."

Where disrespectfull?

Way faster then text!

[-] OccultIconoclast@reddthat.com 8 points 2 days ago

Phone rings

I'm doing the dishes and my hands are wet

I'm sitting on the toilet

I'm in an online game

I just got the baby to sleep

I'm pipetting a solution

I'm with a customer

My hands are covered in engine grease

I'm meditating

I'm on my bicycle

I have gloves on

I'm carrying heavy furniture

I'm driving

I'm swimming at the pool

I'm in the middle of a set

I'm trying to put out a grease fire on the stove

Sure, I can ignore the phone, but it's loud and distracting.

[-] Matombo@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Then turn down the ringtone volume

[-] OccultIconoclast@reddthat.com 4 points 2 days ago

Sure, I can ignore the phone, but it's quiet and distracting

[-] eneff@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 2 days ago

you need to chill

[-] ReplicantBatty@lemmy.one 23 points 2 days ago

My friends and family know not to call me unless somebody is dead or dying. It's worked out pretty well so far

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

They're on a whitelist. Random numbers are not entitled to your attention on demand.

[-] eronth@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, they are lucky to have me. Instant access to me via phonecall is not one of the reasons, but that's fine because they don't need instant access via phonecall.

[-] DytallixB@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

So I am not the only one who do this

[-] Kng@feddit.rocks 3 points 2 days ago

The worst ones are when its some office or something and you have to listen to the voicemail and then call them back

[-] DytallixB@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago
