Summary

Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) faced backlash at a town hall in Roswell, Georgia, over his support for Elon Musk and deep federal budget cuts.

Constituents jeered and booed as McCormick defended layoffs at the CDC, arguing AI makes some jobs redundant.

Attendees criticized the cuts as rushed and extreme, chanting "shame" and accusing him of harming local communities.

The heated event echoed past voter outrage at town halls, with some Republicans avoiding similar meetings after Trump’s first term began in 2017.

Right wing politicians operate on leverage.

These people gave them the keys in exchange for hearing what they wanted.

They no longer have leverage as far as the politician is concerned, so he's done telling them what they want to hear.

History repeats again

It would be nice to have the ablity to trigger a representative recall

[-] WeeSheep@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

Pretty sure that's how right and left politicians work. I'm not saying it's a good thing, that's just generally how politics works now that impeachment means nothing, especially when people have such short memories.

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 66 points 2 days ago

Nah that's just the both sides fallacy, but it sounds like you're operating from a US perspective, so I can see why you think this.

Reminder that Liberalism is also a right-wing ideology, it's just a bit more socially centrist than conservatism. You don't really have much of a left-wing voice in US politics at all, beyond a couple of politicians, I'm afraid.

Actual left wing politicians are guided by ideology to primarily benefit the greatest number of people with their policy.

Right wing politicians are guided by ideology to primarily benefit those holding the greatest amount of capital with their policy.

Pretty much everything else follows from that.

[-] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

It's true, the range of ideological possibilities has been intentionally limited, here in the US. As Noam Chomsky said:

The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.

[-] Tyfud@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago

argued that “a lot of the work” done by probationary employees at the CDC “is duplicitous with AI.”

Holy jesus fuck we're doomed.

[-] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago

Oh bullshit. Next election they’ll line up and vote red down the ballot just like they always do. They’re fools & cowards.

Next election? Kings don't need elections. The "president" declared himself over every intentionally independent entity created by Congress. They all report to him now... So "election" spending, controlled by him. What's allowed, controlled by him, what is allowed to air on television/media, only allowed by him. No media company can speak against him or they can legally be shut down and arrested because he and his attorney general alone can decide what is illegally performed by the media.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

May he face a local peaceful January 6th style protest from his base soon.

[-] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 44 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So I wonder how many of these angry voters were Republicans.

Because it's clear that absolutely nothing will change while R voters continue to cheer Trump on.

BUT ALSO:

I love that they quoted this bit. Of course this motherfucker is stupid enough to say AI can replace CDC jobs; he doesn't even know the meaning of the words he's using. Though duplicitous is a great word for Republicans to learn, since it describes every last fucking one.

McCormick — who recently made headlines when he suggested that children taking part in school lunch programs “sponge off the government” — argued that “a lot of the work” done by probationary employees at the CDC “is duplicitous with AI.”

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

The school lunch stuff fucks me up.

I got booted from free lunch when my mom remarried and my step dad made too much. They didn’t want to pay for my lunch/buy food for me to pack, so I just didn’t eat. Sometimes I’d find some dimes in the vending machines and could get like a Vitamin water or something.

Like yeah, my family could have afforded to pay, and they probably should have been made to pay, but if school is mandatory then feeding you should be too.

I’d get dizzy and feel sick by the end of the day. I still struggle with disordered eating.

Anyone against feeding children is a monster.

[-] Kitathalla@lemy.lol 2 points 1 day ago

Glad I'm not the only one who did a double take for duplicitous.

[-] TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social 18 points 2 days ago

It's like they all had anemia and forget that Trump was running the country into the he ground pre-COVID. But COVID gave them all something to "own the libs" while millions of them claimed their Darwin Award. Not sure how any of them could truly believe he was going to do better for them this time around, when this time they even released their game plan ( Project 2025) before the election.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

They got exactly what they voted for, and now they complain? Idiots.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago

So you... don't want anyone to confront Republicans?

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

They can confront their local head idiot as much as they like. They could hang him from the next tree, if they want. They still are the root cause of the problem, though.

[-] smokin_shinobi@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

We need to embrace the people that are realizing they have made a mistake instead of vilifying them. We are all in this nightmare together and the only way out is for the rational to work together.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

So we should embrace people who f=ing caused that? Them realizing they made a mistake will not matter if the current government will make voting against them even harder or even impossible.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

A better approach would be to give them safe harbor.

If they feel they will be forever cast adrift, who do you think they'll vote for next time?

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

If there is a "next time" for voting in their lifetime.

[-] smokin_shinobi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

What do you suggest we do then?

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

Can't share your optimism. I believe there is one strong bond that unifies what we now call Republicans and it's a frightened pathetic hateful bigotry. Even when our goals might happen to align on details like this, I will never stand by their side. Fuck them, fuck them, fuck them.

[-] smokin_shinobi@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

If we can’t unite as a rational citizenry then we have no chance at making things better. We are all angry but if you want to fix it you have to start somewhere. I’d say the people that were trapped in propaganda cycles and are now realizing it are a really good place to start.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago

If they did all that, they'd be part of the solution. Surely that matters?

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 5 points 2 days ago
  • IDF talking about Palestinians probably
[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Are you sure they voted for him? Georgia, especially that area, is kinda purple.

[-] tburkhol@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

His district was 65-35, so not very purple.

[-] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

You know in most elections slightly less than half of the voters voted for the other candidate, right?

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

That is a problem in democracy deficit countries like the US, yes.

[-] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If you know it then why are you being a dick?

[-] TheOneAndOnly@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

Waaahhh!! They got what they wanted. I wonder how many of these people are part of the 65% that voted in this pile of garbage...

[-] meeeeetch@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Probably a handful. But 35% of a congressional district is (in the lowest population district, which this one isn't) is 190,780 people. You can easily get a small town community center full of people who voted against him and didn't ask for any of this.

[-] TheOneAndOnly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Fair enough.

[-] snekerpimp@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

Good! Get mad and in their faces! Let them know their jobs are at stake as well here. Let them know you are mad at their actions, and shame them for selling the American people like that.

[-] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

The problem is that for most of them, the next step is to vote them right back into office.

[-] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

Anger without action is irrelevant.

They don't care how angry people are because they know they will do nothing other than complain.

[-] 18_24_61_b_17_17_4@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

I guess good for them for getting pissed, but you fucking jerk offs voted for this.

[-] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 6 points 2 days ago

this ai will fix everything line. ai can help increase productivity but places have been understaffed so severely before it that there is no real room to get savings. at best it could bring quality back up to somewhat decent using 2023 staffing levels.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

"Yeah, but what if add in quantum computing?" -redcap politico, probably
