For clarification: this isn't new, from what I can tell in the article, they started the Robert E Lee holiday following the civil war, and MLK day came after.

Not that they shouldn't be absolutely clowned on for this.

So what's next? Is Trump going to celebrate Hitler on Veteran's Day?

[-] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

He already does.

[-] PugJesus@lemmy.world 14 points 17 hours ago

Sherman left too much of the South intact

[-] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

the USA did not try those who financed the civil war as they should have

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 7 points 16 hours ago

The Radical Republicans tried to put Sherman in charge of Reconstruction. Too bad that didn't happen.

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

If your local college has a Kappa Alpha chapter, it is basically a cult dedicated to worshipping Robert E Lee. He appeals to that “war between brothers” tragic story type of “Lost Cause” narrative, and is ridiculously popular among dominionist Christians.

[-] lurklurk@lemmy.world 12 points 19 hours ago

I guess Robert E Lee losing was helpful, but I suspect they're just racists and not honoring him for being such a loser

[-] Snapz@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago

He really was a loser.

[-] 2ugly2live@lemmy.world 15 points 20 hours ago

I can't wait to watch the speech.

"And along with freedom fighter, Martin Luther King, we would also like to honor the great general Lee, who fought hard to keep half of our population in servitude and went on to surrender valiantly. While he didn't win the war, he won our hearts."

[-] reddit_sux@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

I thought Americans celebrate winners not losers.

[-] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 12 hours ago

Something about projection something something

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 7 points 16 hours ago

The south lost the war but won the peace through protracted terrorism.

[-] andros_rex@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

They don’t think the Civil War is over.

[-] TriPolarBearz@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

The South will rise again!

-these people

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

But he was white and hated black people. So that's kind of thrir team.

[-] animephantasm 7 points 20 hours ago

I am from Virginia where we used to celebrate Lee Jackson King Day (in that order too).

It is crazy that the American south is still like this

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 11 points 19 hours ago

Should have Year Zero'd them in 1865. Hang every plantation owner and Confederate officer, shut down every bank that funded slave purchases, break up the plantations and distribute the land to the freed slaves. May Andrew Johnson burn in hell.

Tbf there's the South and there's Alabama and Mississippi South.

And Louisiana, sometimes. And Georgia, obviously. Florida.

Texas... Okay, it's the whole South.

But at least that cancer hasn't spread to the Midwestern states!

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

Ohio checking in.......why do we have confederate flags in northern Ohio? Hell the only thing seperating us from Canada is a god damn lake!!! How much more north can you get???

[-] Railing5132@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

It's the same across all the Midwest - Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas... I don't even think the Dakotas were states during the Civil War, but there's the loser-traitor flag all over across the upper Midwest.

[-] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 4 points 20 hours ago

I went to Ohio to visit family as a teen in the 90s and it was normal. I went again as an adult and suddenly everyone I wasn't related to had a southern accent and was very....banjo duel....

WTF happened to you Ohio?!

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago
[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

How much more north can you get???

I seem to recall that you guys and Michigan had a "war" over that exact question......

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah.....we lost. We got stuck with toledo....

[-] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

And we got the beautiful, mineral-rich upper peninsula. Pretty good trade in the end!

[-] Archelon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Nova Scotia here, even we’ve got ‘em.

[-] w3dd1e@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And Arkansas. Been through that state and in some of those small towns, as much as they don’t want to be known that way, it’s true.

Recently drove through Mississsippi and Alabama ( off I-20). Seems like they have more important thinks to worry about.

[-] lurklurk@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago

It's cheaper to incite racism than to deliver government services

[-] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

The roads are murder there

[-] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago

More cracks then a plumbers' convention.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 97 points 1 day ago

If that's not the most racist thing I've heard in a while...

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Just wait until you hear what trump just tweeted about the jews......

I mean, he didn't, but you were already prepared to say to yourself "Oh god, what NOW???"

Mostly because him, and controversial shit are just on brand for him. Like I could say he reverse pardoned the central park 5. That's where you force a conviction even if the crime isn't true.

And some people would believe me. And a reverse pardon isn't even a thing. And even if it was, he doesn't take oath until tomorrow.

Some people could still believe me. That's just how shitty of a person he's historically been, and how often he's been shitty, that you could make up any obviously false claims, and it would still seem plausible.

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I like to think I’m not any more gullible than anyone else, but every time I’ve heard something horrible from the orange convict, it’s beyond preposterous and somehow even worse than I was dreading. Yes, I’m prepared to hear and believe even worse. Yes, I can no longer enjoy political comedy because reality is more ridiculous

This feels like serious doublethink

[-] nick@midwest.social 41 points 1 day ago

Two dogshit states that should have been razed and had the earth salted.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

AL and MS are radically different states. Teleport me to any road, small town or city, I'll tell you which state I'm in given a few miles or minutes.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah one says roll tide and the other says hotty toddy and both are failed experiments in Republican leadership.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Never been down here, huh? Just say you don't know anything about either state, or maybe say nothing at all.

[-] LandedGentry@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

I lived in Birmingham, AL for 7 years and Jackson, MS for 2 but please lecture me further

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

It was Lee who opposed Confederate memorials. I'll bet the orange traitor is toasting the fucking Confederacy right now.
