From unixsocks to vistapantyhose smh

Vista was fine. It got a bad rep because it introduced a lot of changes that are normal now, like UAC. It took a bullet for 7.

[-] spider 9 points 1 month ago

From what I understand, 7 = bugfixed Vista with a different GUI.

[-] RowanBird779 8 points 1 month ago

the main change was that it came out in an era of faster computers lol

[-] spider 6 points 1 month ago

more specifically the 32-bit to 64-bit transition era

[-] RowanBird779 5 points 1 month ago

that was definitely more of an early 2006 thing, Windows Vista came out in late 06 for manufacturers, but I think it was definitely relevant at the time

[-] RowanBird779 2 points 1 month ago

i'd say it was more because the hardware requirements lol, if it came out in, say, 2008, I feel like people would've already had better computers and it would've been better received. that being said, it'll be fine on high end hardware as far back as 2004 I believe

Some versions do, or just use GIMP which does most of it anyway

[-] RowanBird779 4 points 1 month ago
[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

Yeah it sure is and everyone who says it's a good replacement for photoshop is delusional. A more fitting replacement would be Krita.

[-] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Not sure what you mean. Most functions are available, except for AI enhanced functions of Photoshop. The UI is ultimately based on older versions of Photoshop. There will be some (potentially minor) learning curve to get away from the corpo option.

It's pretty straightforward. But support for Adobe seems hard to break.

If you support AI art, then yeah, definitely stick with Adobe, if GIMP is too much of an ask. Ultimately FOSS relies on people using it.

And, given the sub/community you have posted this in, maybe reevaluate your needs.

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

yeah that's fair, and I don't really mean the UI layout or anything, that's fine. I'm talking about the fact that everything feels buggy and slow, like it'll crash at any minute. I can't stand it. if you like using it, that's great, i just can't.

also I use a pirated copy of CS6

[-] spider 2 points 1 month ago

I never got the hang of GIMP; mtPaint is my go-to image editor.

[-] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Well tbh, I don't know the state of GIMP on Windows, but it definitely isn't designed for it. It should not be buggy or crashy -- at least it isnt on Linux. So I mean... Why Windows?

CS6 definitely runs on Linux via Wine. I've done through CS8. But again... There is little reason to do so assuming you're running GIMP on the intended platform.

Edit: not trying to be a dick either. Mostly just trying to nudge you to give both Linux and GIMP another chance. DM me if you want, happy to help.

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago

i've run GIMP on Windows, Linux, Haiku even, felt the same either way. so like at this point I just don't care. and plus I use content aware fill, like, a lot. will not be using WINE, too much of a headache/

[-] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I mean... I guess I don't get it then. GIMP is incredibly stable, so

Edit: also, Haiku? BeOS was great but probably shouldn't play with Haiku until you're comfortable in Linux.

Edit2: I only mentioned Wine because that's how you would run CS6/8 on Linux. Wine also is not difficult.

As an aside, I have bad news for the person who downvoted almost every comment here: Downvotes are disabled and not viewable in lemmy.blahaj.zone, and they don't count toward the vote total. Sorry, weirdo.

[-] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

At least you're using the objectively best version of Windows

[-] Luci@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

Wh-wh-what!?!? XP Media Centre Edition is spinning in its grave right now

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago

[-] RowanBird779 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

true :p i love vista. it's also dual booted with XP :)

[-] Luci@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Daily drive Haiku on that thing! I dare ya!!!

[-] RowanBird779 2 points 1 month ago

running Haiku on my T410 but yea I tried that, couldn't get school WiFi to work :\

[-] cowboycrustation 3 points 1 month ago

I'm curious what are the specs on your machine

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

this one? sure, it's a ThinkPad Z61m, TYPE 9450-D9U blah blah blah

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, 2GB DDR2, 500GB 7200RPM HDD (came with 120GB 5400RPM), 1680x1050 LCD, 9-cell battery (with about 60% capacity), and 0.3mp webcam

[-] cowboycrustation 2 points 1 month ago

Did you upgrade any of it or was that how it came out of the box? I like the look of it and the old thinkpad keyboards

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago

no upgrades other than the hard drive, it didn't come with one though. although this is just about the max config of this that you could've gotten in 2006 afaik.

[-] ExhaleSmile@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Slightly disappointed it's not Windows Me...

[-] RowanBird779 1 points 1 month ago
