I was feeling an itch to quantify this list and look at the impact of recent elections as well. Here’s the tallies as I found them from the source-

USA- 58 interventions, 3 since 2000

Soviet Union/Russia- 38 interventions, 9 since 2000

China- 20 interventions, 18 since 2000

Saudi Arabia- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

Iran- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

Israel- 3 interventions, all post-2000

India- 3 interventions, 2 since 2000

France- 3 interventions, 2 since 2000

There’s a smattering of others with 1-3 interventions but these were the main ones.

The US' glory days are clearly in the past 😔

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

I’m happy to see most of the hypocrisy limited to the Cold War. Well, that we know of, at least.

‘20, but yeah, pretty much par for the course for the Trump admin. Great example of the blowback not being worth it, but that’s never stopped the CIA from trying some dumbass shit.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

Makes sense, solidify capitalism globally and help crush any existing communist state. Jobs done so why continue I guess...

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

My take is the blowback isn’t really worth the effort (Iran as a prime example) so they’ve mostly stopped, but maybe that’s just me hoping for a less cynical reality.

the US switched to sanctions and is now sanctioning like 30% of the world. For instance, afaik, the trump sanctions on venezuela started the current uptick of venezuelan refugees

[-] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The refugees as you call them have been steady since 2013, way before the sanctions to 7 specific individuals, but just in time for socialism to fail due to lack of money

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

the reality is there was a big uptick in border crossings and refugees about a year after the 2017 sanctions blocking oil sales that created a debt crisis and its only gone up since then

[-] andrewth09@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Kids these days don't even know how to rig an election. What are they even teaching in schools.

[-] Skua@kbin.earth 24 points 2 months ago

The Vatican City having one was a highlight for me

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The Vatican, another theocratic state instantiated by far right extremists. The Vatican as a modern nation state was formalized by Mussolini.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

Saudi Arabia- 4 interventions, 3 since 2000

This feels like an undercount.

Israel- 3 interventions, all post-2000

This feels like an enormous undercount.

They’re not the greatest to their former colonies. Gave Russia the opening in West Africa imo

[-] Linkerbaan@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago

This list is very incomplete. I'm noticing American coups in at least Pakistan with Imran Khan and 2020 Venezuela are missing. Also Afghanistan doesn't exist on that list?

[-] kersplomp@programming.dev 20 points 2 months ago

Cool, you should add those in and find some sources. It's Wikipedia

Always projection when the US shouts about others doing the same.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 48 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I mean, others are doing the same. We know because it makes it harder for us to meddle in foreign elections. And of course Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, they're going to interfere with our elections as much as they can. President Trump was very good for them, and his voters are easily swayed.

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

It is a matter of scale, the US does it to grow and maintain hegemonic power and others react in kind.

[-] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 months ago

That makes it sound like you think that its only wrong with the US does it?

[-] Skua@kbin.earth 24 points 2 months ago

It's like American exceptionalism for people that don't like America

No but there is a measure of who had caused the most harm for their own good. US #1

While responsible for more than any other country, they are not listed as responsible for a majority on that page. 57 out of 125.

I think it's unfair to the hard working people of the Kremlin to exclude any election featuring Geert Wilders, Nigel Farage, or Marine Le Pen from this list.

[-] kersplomp@programming.dev 5 points 2 months ago

Feel free to add it to the list. It's Wikipedia.

[-] aasatru@kbin.earth 21 points 2 months ago

It's funny how Israel is routinely interfering in US elections, considering that they're just a well trained US overseas territory according to folks over at the .ml instances.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 months ago

The most ethical instance in the world.

Liberal tries to strawman. ml but fails horribly.

Also also USA is the country who's elections are most intervened in - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_electoral_interventions#United_States

No interventions in any of China's elections for some reason.
