This whole graph is wack except friend's dog.

[-] Ledivin@lemmy.world 51 points 5 months ago

Seriously... a dog is not 80% the effort of a horse. It's not even 10%

Okay Lemmy, this is a reddit post and it's horribly wrong (naturally). Can we fix it?

[-] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 5 months ago

Goldfish require a ton of effort. They need huge tanks, water filtration systems, chemical balancing (nitrate buildup can kill them pretty quickly), and regularly scheduled feeding times. Dogs on the other hand just need to be taken outside every few hours and fed two or three times a day on top of the occasional vet visit.

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 26 points 5 months ago

Not if you stick em in a bowl and let them die in a few months.

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 14 points 5 months ago

Yeah, all that stuff about filtration systems and big tanks sounds way more expensive than just buying a new goldfish every couple of months.

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Fortunately I don't see too many people sticking dogs in bowls.

[-] _lilith@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago

Am I owning cats wrong? Cats are easy as fuck. You just take care of Vet/Food/Poop they do the rest

[-] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 8 points 5 months ago

Hell yeah cats are a piece of cake to look after. You can't completely neglect them but they do largely take care of themselves.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 5 months ago

The hardest part about owning cats is when you put the complicated cat scratching post/bed thing together.

Cats should swap place with parakeets on the effort axis. Salt water fish should be higher effort than babies.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 12 points 5 months ago

Why your cat so far to the right? They are a lot easier to look after than dogs. You have to walk dogs 53 times a day or at least they think so.

The cat doesn't care, a good day for a cat is when they spend 75% of the time on your bed.

[-] Sconrad122@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

I'm gonna go ahead and say the scale is logarithmic, because the jumps from cat to dog to baby/horse to dragon are all depicted about the same and are definitely not

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 12 points 5 months ago

I have a friend who’s gotten into hermit crab rescue with his wife, and if you’re only expending the effort shown on this chart, congratulations you’re an abusive pet owner.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 11 points 5 months ago

so for some reason 'sea monkeys' triggered a giggling fit to tears

[-] BalooWasWahoo@links.hackliberty.org 11 points 5 months ago

The snake is way too low on the fun factor. Just try letting it out when everybody's at the house drinking, and watch the hi-jinx!

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 5 months ago

I had a girlfriend who had a snake, It didn't really bother me in and of itself, but I just found the whole food situation to be disgusting. It was either eating live grasshoppers (those things are creepy as hell) or dead mice.

I was quite happy to hold it though, at least once I was assured that it wasn't going to constrict my arm off.

[-] MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown@fedia.io 10 points 5 months ago

Where is rock?

[-] 01101000_01101001@mander.xyz 10 points 5 months ago

Somebody's never had a goldfish, I see

[-] Godort@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago

The scale on this graph cant be accurate.

Its not a similar jump in effot between a parakeet and a cat as a cat and a horse.

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 7 points 5 months ago

Perhaps it's logarithmic. Which makes the magnification needed to see sea monkeys even more impressive.

[-] saigot@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I'm pretty sure birds take way more effort than dogs and cats.

I'm pretty sure, as a dog owner that ferrets are both more effort and more work than a dog.

[-] qevlarr@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

Nice idea but this graph is just wrong

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago
[-] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

But not really less effort than a cat unless you just keep them in a cage, which you shouldn't do. We had a house rabbit, and I really loved it, but rabbits like to (need to) chew, and bunny-proofing your home is a huge pain. But otherwise they're kind of similar: easy to litter train, very individual personalities, etc.

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago

Mine have that oxbow compressed hay house! I find packing tape on corners they like to chew on stops then from doing so

[-] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Good ideas, but probably not adequate for things like electrical cords.

[-] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago

That thing depicted there looks like a 7-9mo old baby. That's when things get fun, but still a lot of effort.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 3 points 5 months ago

12-16m is when shit gets real. theyre mobile.

[-] DriftinGrifter 2 points 5 months ago

thats just the hormones telling you not to chuck it then and there the real fun begins circe 17years in

[-] venoft@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Parakeets lower than rabbits and cats all the way to the right, to the right of ferrets?? Did this author ever even have pets? Or met animals?

[-] KISSmyOSFeddit@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Fixed version:

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 months ago

I found the odd one out: tamagotchis aren't pets, they aren't even real

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 8 points 5 months ago
[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago
[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 8 points 5 months ago

Parakeets are also on there and they're not real either.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 months ago

Not exactly. They are governmental drones but as such a very real threat

[-] thejoker954@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Pay no attention to my downvote I just think its funny to argue they are real.

[-] lugal@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

Maybe they are for you...

...in that case you are delusional. Seek help

[-] CubitOom@infosec.pub 3 points 5 months ago

Kindly request we add chickens.

I think it would be equal fun as ferrets but the effort of a cat.

[-] AchtungDrempels@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Love my friends dogs :)

[-] HEXN3T 2 points 5 months ago

Damn I wish I had a dragon to ravage the world with

[-] iarigby@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

parakeets should be up there with dragons

[-] LolcatXTREME@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

My bird yelling at me for 3 hours because he’s jealous I looked at my other bird for a second
