We got the omnibus edition of the IDW 2022 Lower Decks comic series. It was hilarious and truly reflected the show.
Knowing it’s the same writing and art team for the new interactive graphic novel makes it an automatic preorder.
A 70mm theatre release, no matter how limited, is an encouraging sign in terms of Paramount’s continuing commitment to this show.

Ugh. This has to be the least Star Trek Star Trek I've ever encountered, why is it so popular? It directly contradicts everything we know about the Star Trek universe at every opportunity.
Wait, Lower Decks? LD captures the spirit of Trek better than any official property in a long time. No soap-opera-style parade of cataclysms, just exploring humanity by exploring space.
I was put off by it being a comedy initially, but the framework the comedy happens within does a lot of great examination of Trek and of life. Plus lots of great characters with growth.
What kinds of contradictions do you mean?
Agreed. If you set aside the comedy bits for just one second and examine the plots, they're very standard Star Trek, and I love how LD is able to simultaneously be funny and also good Trek.
Frankly, I'm thrilled that it's something different. Especially now that Prodigy has apparently been canned, and I was fascinated by that one because it felt Star Trek but also like they were bringing in some Star Wars-esque character designs and villain...
I do think the key to making Star Trek the "expanded universe" Paramount wanted is to make various different subgenres of shows, but make sure they all adhere to core Star Trek values. (I still want my Starfleet Medical Drama, dammit. I want Star Trek Law and Order where every episode is a courtroom drama. Maybe an anthology series where they just kind of throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks for new shows.)
I don't know what's going on with the Starfleet Academy series but, frankly, I don't care if it's Riverdale level trash as long as the actual Star Trek bits are authentic. Let the teenagers enjoy things.

I, and many others, think this is great Trek. I’m just curious if you can articulate what you find un-Trek about this show.
FTR: All other Trek we’ve had so far has been essentially from the perspective of the elite of the Trek universe. Now we’re just seeing the universe from the “worker class”. It’s just a different perspective, but still holds to the ideals of Roddenberry Trek I feel.
It is literally filled to the BRIM with all sorts of trek references literal and metaphorical, only true fans would get them all
It’s popular because it was made for fans with cameos and references to the trek we have all known and loved.
I’m somehow surprised and yet not that there’s going to be a CYOA type story. I mean, I’m very surprised it’s a thing, but I’m not surprised that Ryan North is attached to it. I highly recommend reading Romeo and/or Juliet. It’s hilarious and absolutely worth reading.
His work with Erica Henderson on The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was straight up one of the best runs at Marvel in the last decade, so I'm looking forward to this.
