After helping some others on here, I realized its both OK, and a good idea for me to ask for help with my current situation. I've posted some details about my situation before, but I tried to write a more concise explanation on my fundraising page.

Setting up a Matrix account is pretty simple.

Go to Element's registration page (it's currently the most popular frontend for Matrix)

Set your homeserver (under "Host an account on") to one of these servers (the matrix.org homeserver sucks)

Username, password, done. (the email section will be removed once you switch to a homeserver that doesn't require one)

Matrix is a decentralized open source messaging platform with support for encrypted messaging. To oversimplify it, it is to Discord what Lemmy is to Reddit.
