thank god the movies toned down the singing. thats the part of the books i hated

[-] ech@lemm.ee 41 points 2 years ago

I never hated the singing bits, but it bugged me since I never knew the intended rhythm or melody. Felt like I only got a part of the song every time.

I just skipped it after I realized it wasn't introducing anything new to the plot.

Reading the lyrics to a song is just reading poetry and I hate poetry.

O Orofarnë, Lassemista, Carnimírië! O rowan fair, upon your hair how white the blossom lay! O rowan mine, I saw you shine upon a summer's day, Your rind so bright, your leaves so light, your voice so cool and soft: Upon your head how golden-red the crown you bore aloft! O rowan dead, upon your head your hair is dry and grey; Your crown is spilled, your voice is stilled for ever and a day. O Orofarnë, Lassemista, Carnimírië!

There's a fair bit of singing in the movies, granted I haven't read the books in years to really compare.

[-] A_Toasty_Strudel@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago

There's more of it in the books, be peeps definitely be singing in the movies.

The only ones I can recall in the LOTR movies are the wordless chorus in Lothlorien after Gandalf passed and when Pippin sings for Denethor while he abuses a tomato.

[-] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 years ago

Merry and Pippin also sing a drinking song while on the shire. Gollum also "sings" in the forbidden pool while catching a fish. In addition to what the others said.

[-] Mirshe@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Merry and Pippin also redo The Green Dragon again at Theoden's hall after Helm's Deep IIRC.

Aragorn definitely sings something. I can't remember what or when, but I can hear the song.

[-] Maultasche@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago

He sings about Beren and Luthien in the first film and later at his coronation in the third one.

[-] Thrashy@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

In addition to what's been mentioned below, in Fellowship Bilbo sings the first verse of The Road Goes Ever On and On as he departs the Shire for Rivendell, and in the extended edition Sam and Frodo encounter a party of elves on their way to the Grey Havens who are singing A Elbereth Gilthoniel as they travel.

What about Gandalf’s mumble rap?

wordless chorus in Lothlorien after Gandalf passed

Howard Shore goes to the trouble of incorporating Sindarin and Quenya lyrics into the soundtrack and you call it a "wordless chorus"?

Tom Bombadil sang a lot, but he's not in the movie which really drops the amount of singing.

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow! Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

Perhaps omitting him from the movie was the right choice after all...

I think this was one of the many mistakes they made with the Hobbit movies. Or at least with the first 30 minutes or so of the first one, I never watched any of it past that lol

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 years ago

Honestly, them singing is possibly the only good thing to come out of those movies. It fits into my Dwarf Fortress songs fairly well.

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Between the goofy musical number and the bad acting I just turned it off and never looked back. Oddly enough I really enjoyed the songs in the old Rankin and Bass animated movie lol

[-] half_built_pyramids@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Yes, this. See the rothfuss misty mnts link I posted. Soulful shit.

It's like they say: "Where there's a whip there's a way"

In contrast, the early song number is the only part of the Hobbit trilogy that I didn't sleep through.

Home invasion by singing dwarfs was already hilarious in the books. That it's a quality bit of chorus singing in the film just makes it that much better, to me.

The rest of the Hobbit trilogy felt meandering and unfocused to me.

In fairness, I really desperately needed a nap the last couple times I tried to watch them.
