The One Punch Man anime turning into One Frame Man in its third season.
From battles consisting of transparent PNGs sliding from the bottom left to the top right corner of the screen, to ludicrous censoring techniques like replacing a cigarette with a lollipop.
For the fourth season they just inversed the poster from the third season. Tbf it will be actually Season 3 part 2, but it shows they aren't even trying.
Juxtaposed to this is the Dorohedoro anime, that also dropped a new season this year, after six (!) years.
The long wait had a good reason. The animator loves the manga, but was busy working on the Attack on Titan anime and didn't want to rush Dorohedoro's second season. It's a huge improvement over the first season, refining its mix of 3D and 2D hand drawn content into a wonderfully horrifying experience.
ROTJ was the first movie I recall having seen in a theatre; I loved it, and I still have a very soft spot for it. I can slough off criticisms of Ewoks without completely disagreeing that they were the beginning of the end and a backslide from ESB. I think I'm on the other side of the same cohort as Simon Pegg. He would have been 7 when ANH (aka just Star Wars) came out, and would only have been 13 when ROTJ came out. Unless you got into your teen ennui and "cooler than thou" mindset a bit early, 13 is still young enough to take it in with no judgment. Add another 16 years of livin', and George pushing things even a bit farther, and yeah, JarJar is not getting the same leeway.

The end of Battlestar Galactica.
They literally tied up all the loose threads into a bundle labeled "God did it" and then refused to speculate about God because that's distasteful.
It's sci-fi. You speculate. It's what the genre does.
Not a fan of the ending myself but c'mon, it's been a religious sci-fi since season one, dealing with prophecies, visions and existential questions. God was always going to be a part of the equation. Unless they revealed the nature of god being some machine or a more developed civilization, at which point they would never be able to finish the show because that wouldn't be an answer but a whole new set of questions.

I have rewatched the series and come to some peace about it, but it is still the first one to come to mind for this thread.
Religion was always woven into the series, and the original was somewhat Mormon inspired.
But that last bit, the evolving nature of god and the whole new set of questions was what I was hoping it would touch on.

I love/hated BSG ever since they expanded the number of Cylons for like the 3rd time. It was around that time it leaked that they didn't have any plan and Ron Moore had been lying to the fans for years.
After it was over he said, (paraphrased) "LOL, There was no plan. If someone suggested more hidden cylons and it sounded dramatic we would go with it and figure out what that would mean in the next writing session."
Yeah, if you put in the opening the line "They have a plan," you better damned well know what that plan is.
In the end the plan was "We're gonna kill 'em all!!"
Their plan was to scam the fans into believing there was a plan so they'd watch.

I was never a big tv watcher to begin with but after that whole fiasco I realized the whole thing is a scam designed to string you along for as long as possible. They start with one or two good seasons and then just wing it until it runs out of steam and don't give a shit about the story as long as they're making money. So disrespectful to the viewer's time and emotional investment. It violates a basic principle in storytelling: begin with the end in mind.
I quit watching all TV after that, with the exception of the Walking Dead (due to the gf's insistence) which only further cemented my convictions.

As a young person, I loved A Wrinkle in Time and the entire set of sequels.
And so I say a heartfelt FUCK YOU to Ava DuVernay, who crappified this masterpiece into vapid pap film that felt like it was written by Kellogg's marketing team in conjunction with the Ad Council of America.
Apparently the film lost $130 million. Thank God there is little chance of a sequel.
My wife loved the book in her tween years and encouraged me to read it... I'm not the intended audience for sure and some of the ideas were cool but that book sucks lol
I had a crush in middle school. Back then you signed your name on a physical card to remove a book from the library. I saw that she had rented A Wind in the Door just before me. I was so thrilled to ask her about it. She vaguely remembered losing interest and hadn't read Wrinkle. Heartbreak.

Editing to add: Eragon. The only, one singular, thing that film got right was the opening scene. The rest of the film was an epic, blot-out-the-sun middle finger to the book and the fans.
And Highlander 2 isn't even the worst Highlander movie. Hell, I'd argue that on a ranking list of all Highlander movies and shows it would be right in the middle.
To be clear, I'm not saying Highlander 2 isn't bad. I'm just saying that the franchise has somehow managed to produce things that are far worse. There's a reason that basically every entry in the series is a reboot of one kind or another.
Violet Evergarden: The Movie
Major Gilbert is revealed to be alive. And she goes back to him. And it's implied to be romantic.
The whole series was about her escaping her past as a child soldier and learning to live a normal life, and they end it by having her go right back to him. But it's okay, he may have made her into a child soldier, but he was kind sometimes, so he's a good guy and definitely not an abuser! And he was the closest thing she ever had to a father figure, but now that she's all grown up she can love him and that's perfectly normal! This is a great finale that doesn't undermine the whole show that led up to it, and isn't fucked up at all!
The rest of the show is still so damn good, just pretend the movie never happened.
The Halo games.
I think Bungie fumbled a bit but overall did a good job telling the story of Master Chief. Halo 3 really felt like it was intended to be his end because MC was right back where he started - A super weapon kept in cryo, only this time drifting indefinitely into space with very little chance of ever being found.
Then Bungie did Halo: Reach as a follow up and showed you could have a good Halo game without MC as the protagonist, telling a new(ish) story with new characters.
Then of course Microsoft ditched Bungie and kept the IP, now looking at now the vast amount of Halo novels and comics and other media, decided to dig up Master Chief again and shoehorn him into a bunch of other game plots.
I won't say Halo 4/5/Infinite are terrible or anything to that level but I don't think 343 nailed it.
Even more frustrating now that Microsoft seems keen to remaster the whole Halo Master Chief story arc (again).
But the Halo series was the worst. The opening scene had me, I will admit. It was bad ass to see it in real life like that, being part of some humans who had no chance in hell of survival. But the storyline from there... so stupid.
The engagement bait, algorithmic nature of social media is up there for me. Everything has to be the most extreme, divisive there's no room for gradients and equivalency.
I'm still bitter about the first Spiderman movie (the Toby McGuire one). Like growing up, Spiderman was my favorite comic character and I spent a lot of time and money following it.
I almost walked out of the theater when Spiderman let the guy who killed his uncle fall to his death. Like JFC this is THE most important moment of Peter's life and what he always goes back to when he's in a moral dilemma.
It's made me sour on watching any of the other Spiderman movies.
I don't recall that but honestly after they introduced the multiverse and used that to tie all the different Spider-men together, I'd be able to forgive that. That was just really well done.
There was a "what if" series of comics that touched on it and the premise was what if Peter didn't save the guy. So it wasn't unheard of but still not something that a first run movie that's basically telling Spider-Man's origin story should be doing
When I was younger, the Star Wars prequel trilogy killed the franchise for me. Older me has grown more jaded and does not care as much anymore.
The 'Song of Ice and Fire' series by GRRM was bad enough. If the series had ended after the Red Wedding, I would have been at peace. Instead, an entire can of new characters and storylines was opened. The series is unfinished and if any new books come out, they have lost my interest. Now that isn't too bad, but the last seasons of the Game of Thrones series were so poorly written that it killed the books even further for me.
I read that someone mentioned Highlander. For a movie with the tag line 'There can be only one', it sure has many sequels. The original is bad, but in a very fun way. I hold it dear to my heart. The sequels are really forgettable. OTOH, the spinoff television series was not too bad if I remember correctly after 30+ years.
The TV series for Highlander was good. Had a few great scenes and characters. Think of it as an alternate timeline going a different direction, playing with the ideas the movie introduced on how immortality isn't such a great thing.
How different and vastly inferior Ready: Player One the movie was compared to the book.
I've never been so confused and upset at a movie.
The movie completely skipped over 2112. Total disservice to the young people who could use these tools from the Ancient Race to fight back against Earthly authoritarian governments.
I hate watching Mexican telenovelas because they are not color graded yellow. Because there is no color grading and the cast is almost entirely white, I keep thinking everything is set in the United States. Super confusing.
The dark tower film
Lightyear (2022) had a trailer that is straight up false advertising. The trailer shows him contacting Star Command, something that never occurs in the movie. Still bitter about that.
Battle Los Angeles (2011) probably the biggest gap between the trailer's quality and the film's quality I've ever seen.
Giglie (2003), a movie on a lot of lists for being one of the worst of all time. The story behind it is that Ben Affleck and J-Lo got together during filming. The problem is, it wasn't a romcom. J-Lo's character was a lesbian. But because the of their real life romance, they rewrote the ending so the two get together.
And I hope we never, ever see anyone tackle The Silmarillion. Simply because, there will be so much improvised fluff in that would-be film, that it'd make the Hobbit films blush.

Just like trying to make a sequel to Highlander. Imagine that. The film had a hard ending, there's no place for it to go from there.
When I was a kid, an anchor on a major network news program called mosquitos “flying hypodermic needles”. This was at the height of the AIDS epidemic. It absolutely terrified me.
I was just old enough to understand what the anchor was talking about, but too young to know that the TV news was often exaggerated and should be treated with skepticism. I’m still kinda bitter about that. Scaring the fuck out of a kid is NOT okay.
Adult Swim creating 4 new FLCL series in a naive (at best) attempt to cash in on nostalgia for the original 6-episode show.
The original FLCL was a legendary show. Beautifully animated by Gainax and Production IG at their absolute prime, iconic soundtrack by the Pillows at their absolute prime, and a extremely well-told stand-alone story with a satisfying beginning, middle and end. A cult classic and a diamond in the rough! To me, as close to a perfect show as I think is possible.
Nobody was asking for more FLCL, and the story of the show was absolutely not calling for more. It was over and done. What's more, the group of people and the conditions that made this show possible had moved on.
But then Adult Swim, I guess in an effort to bring back viewers from the old days, decided to make not 1, not 3, but 4 new FLCL shows! The quality was pretty low, the stories were mediocre at best, and the heart and originally simply weren't there. It really was just a cash in, and I think that it has hurt the legacy of the original show.
That's actually really interesting. I remembered the whole reason the original FLCL aired on adult swim was related to a sweepstakes where the winner got to set the programming for the night.
They wrote passive aggressive bumpers about it so I got the idea nobody there liked FLCL. Finding out they were involved with the sequels makes them even more uncanny

"I dunno man. Just sexualize some minors or something. I think that's what the original show was about so that's all it should take to make a sequel"

Despite being just a little teaser trailer, it quickly showed itself to be one of the most promising games and made many 'best-ofs' lists at the time. An extremely frustrating 'what could have been'.
