I read that Irish- and Italian-Americans were only granted recognition as White after they were recruited en masse (often from criminal/street gangs) into police departments and put to use against Black populations migrating from the Jim Crow South.
Yeah I'm pretty sure racism was mostly nourished by the rich in order to weaken labor and make money. There's always going to be some prejudice among humans, but the wealthy really leaned into that to profit.
It would have been uncomfortable for them if the poors of every background got together and acted on the realization that the rich don't even do anything, but live in luxury while we starve.
Yea, the time between (and overlap inbetween) the Irish being sold as slaves, having "Irish need not apply" signs on businesses, and the modern definition of the wHiTe rAcE is far too short for comfort.
