“Don’t boycott GTA 6. Win justice for the people who helped make it. We spent years pouring our hard work, skill, and creativity into making GTA, and we want people to experience the universe that we helped build,” former developers said. “That doesn’t mean we want to let Rockstar off the hook.”

This guy does not understand how capitalism works.

I think he's saying pirate it, maybe?

[-] Amnesigenic@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

I don't give a shit about experiencing any universe built by someone this fucking spineless

[-] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Nah, I have some pirated versions. Won't do anything that gives them money, but I'll play what I have.

This guy's brain is truly cooked if he thinks buying the game will hold Rockstar accountable, and not just financially reward their shitty practices.

Seeing how much they pivoted to multiplayer monetization in 5 post-release, I expect 6 will have barely any campaign with a roblox-like predatory multiplayer.

[-] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

This expectation is crazy to me. Most of what we've seen in an official capacity is cut scenes for a story mode resembling what they've been putting out since 2008, and that's if you ignore the fact that gameplay has leaked multiple times and there won't even be multiplayer at launch. Smart money is that there's a campaign like they've always made and then the online rolls out months later, like their last two games.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago

I’ve noticed that 5’s big online content cycles have all come with their own detailed trailers and “story” moments. I don’t know when those come in between missions, but it’s plausible some of the 6 trailer content comes from missions like those.

[-] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Not when they keep showing the Bonnie and Clyde characters that we know are the playable protagonists. It takes more effort to believe that they're not making a campaign like they've always made.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

Nobody’s claiming they have “zero” singleplayer campaign, but it’s possible it’s very short. A movie makes its trailers off of an hour and a half of content, so the campaign doesn’t have to be long to generate enough for trailers, especially if they can mix in shots of online campaigns.

[-] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

I get where the cynicism comes from, but they still made their regular 30 hour campaign for RDR2 after GTA Online already blew up. They make campaigns like this. It's what they do, it's what these trailers and store pages allude to, and it's what leaked footage shows. As much money as the online mode makes, they're not about to shun the players they've had for decades as though they don't matter, because those players are still worth billions of dollars to them, and work that goes into their usual campaigns can be repurposed for online after the fact.

[-] Shayeta@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Setting your expectations based on marketing is truly "smart money". It would be a nice surprise if that happened, but the monetary incentive pales in comparison.

[-] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I think the smart money is on them continuing to do what they've been doing for decades, which is the kind of campaign they've made for decades, especially since there's no online mode out of the gate.

[-] MacAttak8@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

This is what I’ve told coworkers when this game comes up. I believe Rockstar themselves only referred to it as a single player experience.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago

I‘m not boycotting GTA6. I simply don‘t care about it.

[-] Guitar@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago

I hope they win their lawsuit. But I am certainly boycotting this game and I encourage everyone else to do so as well. Rockstar has become the thing they used to satirize. Of course this game is going to be massively successful. But the more we can cut out of their sales, the better the whole industry will be. I mean shit, these assholes are actually trying to have you pay for a Netflix subscription just to watch their advertising of this trash. And that's on top of a $100 price tag for the full game.

$100 for a revokable license is straight filth. Digital ownership is important, but as a physical collector, not even having the option to buy physical is the easiest pass I will ever take. Especially for a series that has not had any significant innovation in two decades.

Won't be an issue for me - my only gaming device is a steam deck so I very much doubt I'd be able to play this even if I wanted to.

[-] madmantis24@lemmy.wtf 2 points 18 hours ago

Being too broke to afford top-of-the-line gaming hardware has been a blessing in disguise for me!

[-] FrowingFostek@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Wonder is the devs could slip a Linux port of the game out with a portable hard drive. It would be a shame if someone accidentally uploaded the game off said drive to the internet.

[-] kibblebits@quokk.au 8 points 2 days ago

I just had a vision of devs sneaking into a server room and “hacking” the server to copy data onto a drive and somehow getting it out of a building with more security than Fort Knox. I’m sure it had a theme song.

[-] FrowingFostek@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Dumber things have happened. I was imagining this song.

I loved GTA 3, the first one I ever played and bonus, Vice City was even better! I thought GTA 4 was OK - not great, not terrible. I hated GTA 5. Similarly, I loved RDR and hated RDR 2 (I know I basically stand alone on this one).

Personally I feel like Rockstar is on a trajectory. My interest in 6 is in negative numbers. It's not like I don't like the genre. I love Cyberpunk, but even that I didn't buy until I managed to get it on sale for $20.

I might consider getting GTA 6 if it goes on sale for $5, which it won't. Hell, they still want $20 for 4 lol. Money grubbing shits.

[-] Davel23@fedia.io 5 points 2 days ago

I never played RDR, but I picked up 2 for $20 on sale. Bored me out of my mind. It's just "ride horse here, now ride horse here, oh, now ride horse over there". Never finished it.

[-] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

It's GTA without cars indeed.

[-] Davel23@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

I disliked GTA 5 for similar reasons.

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

I haven't even played GTA 5. It felt like a downgrade compared to 4.

[-] tio_bira@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

You're not wrong in technical aspects, also in story, gameplay maybe not, but i definitively play way more 4 than 5.

Also, i prefeer San Andreas than bothbof them

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That's definitely an opinion

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

Are you one of those people who first played GTA5 many years after it came out?

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

A few months after I think

[-] ms_lane@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Maybe if that world was coming to PC, I'd be able to experience it.

Rockstar's average time between console to PC is ~5 years, if it ever comes at all.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Not saying you should or shouldn’t buy it, but their track record is consistently 1-2 years.

GTA IV

  • PlayStation 3Xbox 360: 29 April 2008
  • Windows: 2 December 2008

GTA V

  • PS3Xbox 360: 17 September 2013
  • PS4Xbox One: 18 November 2014
  • Windows: 14 April 2015

RDR2

  • PlayStation 4Xbox One: October 26, 2018
  • Windows: November 5, 2019
[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

The average for recent games is somewhat driven up by RDR taking 14 years (literally multiple years after RDR2).

But GTA is their bread and butter, the old reliable. RDR was the second Red Dead game, but the first one was fairly unknown. It was also created by R* San Diego which didn't really do PC ports of its games anymore, they also didn't port Midnight Club 3 or LA. So I'm fairly sure they (San Diego) didn't plan a PC port at all. But then it was fairly successful and RDR2 even more so and they (R* corporate, not San Diego) had another company port it to Windows.

Moral of the story, this is exactly why averages are misleading compared to median

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks for the detail. You’re spot on that the PC port is definitely more of a priority on their successful titles. What I would give for MC:LA on PC.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

I don't exactly come from money so growing up I had a crappy PC, no consoles. Playing MC:LA was literally a dream for me when it came out, but never did I actually get around to it since once I could afford a console, I didn't really want one too badly. Now I've got Forza Horizon if I want to hoon around in beautiful looking cars I can mod. Though I haven't even gotten 6 yet.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

MC:LA is a mixed bag. If you enjoyed 3 and wanted more of that, it delivers on that dream. It also just had a very enjoyable and challenging story progression. Not all the gameplay compares to modern games though and there are some nice-to-haves that just weren’t the standard yet, so don’t expect a completely smooth experience.

I should get around to booting it up on an emulator. It might be up to it these days.

[-] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago

Not boycotting it per se, I’m just not getting it at launch. I think I’ll play Saints Row 3 again. Those games are so good.

You see what GTA 5 goes on sale for. You got me fucked up if you think I’m dropping $100 on GTA 6.

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

I don't buy anything published by Take-Two Interactive, as they are scummy as fuck...So yeah, sorry about it, won't be buying this game or any other by them. Until they make some less greedy, less dev and consumer hostile choices.

[-] sleepmode@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Fired Marathon and Destiny 2 devs supposedly said similar. Hmm…

[-] Guitar@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

To be completely fair, I wouldn't want to work on a project for like 5+ years and have no one see it either. But regardless of how many people join in on this boycott, the game is already a success. Plenty of people will see their work. So I say, boycott away. I guess we can't exactly say the same about Marathon though.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

I'm not surprised. The actual game designers and developers tend to have passion for their work. Musicians want their to be heard, artists want their work to be seen, game devs want their work to be played.
