What's with the recent trend of screenshotting someone's post on [social media of choice] and then superposing on a random ass image? Is the woman in the background in the car supposed to mean anything? Is this the same person that made the original post? Did she edit it like this?

I am not blaming OP here since I'm sure they just found it and posted it here, but I'm questioning why it became a thing.

LadyButterfly posts these all the time and I've been curious as well. I haven't noticed anyone else doing it, but I don't usually check posters' names.

I like the one where angels come to earth to visit Lot (our hero of the story) and take the form of men. But because they're angels, they're like, super hot. So all the gays in the village want a piece of that fine angel tush. They bang on Lot's door asking for their Snap and Lot (our noble protagonist) is a reasonable man so he suggests the gay men all rape his virgin daughter instead. But they refuse obviously so God has to blow up the whole village.

Fun fact this is where the "cool guys don't look at explosions" trope comes from because Lot and his wife are walking away from the nuked village but she turns round to look and God has to turn her into salt.

In the third act, Lot's daughters are upset that their boyfriends got caught up in the village nuke so they have to rape their dad while he's drunk and then they all live happily ever after.

I don't know why Hollywood still hasn't made it into a movie even though they made the boring boat story.

The best bible verse is the one where god sends bears to murder children for making fun of a bald man.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Mathew 5:6

Fuck anyone who advertises their Christianity.

I was laughing because I thought you meant this: ❌

TIL there are religious emoji. That's crazy. Is there a rule of how big a religion has to be before they get an emoji?

[-] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 16 points 11 hours ago

I actually just learned about the "Elephant Test" recently. Apparently the Unicode Consortium compares a suggested emoji to an elephant when considering notability; only something that's about as well-known as an elephant passes the test. So I think the religion has to be as well-known as an elephant to get an emoji, which feels like a fever dream of a sentence to type.

Fellow Tom Scott “Lateral” fan, eh? :)

I was honestly not expecting to be called out on this, let alone twice! Well, I guess I shouldn't be terribly surprised that thinky nerds on Lemmy listen to a thinky nerd podcast hosted by a thinky nerd.

[-] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 2 points 9 hours ago

That actually sounds like a good test.

Question is, is there an elephant Unicode character?

I got curious and tried to look up all the different religious emojis. After Judaism (with 14.8 million Jewish people per Wikipedia), from what I can tell the next smallest religion with an emoji is Sikhism, with the khanda: 🪯 Wikipedia says there are 25-30 million Sikhs, so I guess somewhere between ~15 and 25 million? Big hurdle for an upstart religion to overcome.

Although that doesn't seem to have helped the Mormons, who have ~17 million followers. But I also don't know of any special symbols they have outside ones shared by other Christians (like crosses).

[-] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 1 points 9 hours ago

There's already a hat emoji.

But that was Saulus/Paulus, not Jesus

[-] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

In fact, according to the Bible Jesus told his followers to go a bit further than merely berating gays:

Matthew 5:17

17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.19Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

[-] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 9 hours ago

I feel there's a loophole in that last sentence. The average persons righteousness has surpassed the Pharisees and teachers of the law. Definitely in modern times, they just got more corrupt.

[-] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

That's a fair point, I also would definitely consider myself more "righteous" than some slave-driving barbarians. I'm not sure that's what Jesus (allegedly) had in mind though.

It's actually an interesting chapter, in the same verses Jesus tells people to be forgiving, love your enemies and turn the other cheek (while in the verses cited above seemingly endorsing the orgy of violence, oppression, retribution and murder that is Old Testament law), and also that a woman who wants to divorce a man who repeatedly rapes and abuses her will burn in hell.
