Assuming the baseline was 30x, which is still wild, 30x to 351x would only be a 10-fold increase. So the line should be "They didn't get 10x smarter or work 10x harder" no?
OK, but hear me out. What if they got 3x smarter and worked ~3.666x harder? Seems plausible right?

Considering most of the bosses and bosses bosses etc I've worked for in my life are the laziest dumb fucks I've ever met ... I have my doubts. There were definitely exceptions but not the majority.
In the 1970s, Jerry Falwell figured out how to get fundamentalist Christians to vote for whoever he wanted, just so long as the candidate committed to reducing abortion access. They didn't care if the same candidate was getting payouts from corporations and passing laws to let them bust strikes and pollute the rivers.
And this figured largely into getting Reagan elected in 1980. And Reagan busted up labor and opened up Washington to lobbyists and special interests groups, and the economy, which had a beefy, robust middle class, went k-shaped from then forward.
Falwell didn't actually care about abortion, incidentally. He cared that the law was now forcing his white-only college to integrate black people.
They successfully got rid of Roe, and now you've got half a generation of boomers with no real ideology. They're the dog that caught the car.
So they have it spoonfed to them by Fox News, et al. without even a moment of reflection.
And now for many of the ones who might have once had a chance of listening to reason, they've gone into the ultimate sunk cost territory. That is, they've caused not only fascism to destroy their country, they have ensured that the planet will not be livable for their grandchildren.
So they must lean more more into dispensationalism and Armageddon theology.
I mean, what else can they do, admit to themselves that they've ultimately made miserable (and drastically shortened) the lives of their own grandchildren?
And for what?
Can't do that. Must march forward with what the child rapists want. Because "God uses imperfect instruments," or something their pastor told them.
Anything else would require admitting to themselves the unforgivable shit that they gleefully participated in while people who cared for them warned and tried to stop them. Their boomer mind won't allow their ego to suffer in that way. After all, that's what matters most. Protecting that boomer ego.

"Middle class" refers to your social status and contrasts with "upper class" and "lower class." It's about how we perceive and treat each other on a social level. It does not refer to your Marxian class under capitalism. There is nothing between the ruling class and the working class. People don't mind not being on top but they so can't stand being on the bottom, they need to invent a third class.
In common usage, the "____ class" terms refer to income/wealth levels, and the social constructs derive from that.
More importantly, the semantics of the comment are completely irrelevant to the actual message being conveyed.
We all belong to any number of different overlapping classes when considered through different paradigms. My point here was that talking about the "middle class" as though it had a place in political class theory is confusing categories. There is nothing between the ruling class and the working class and I don't know how to put that simpler. Those are the classes we are concerned about when discussing work reform. Political classes aren't about our income or whether we prefer Evian or Fiji.
Good lord, replace the words "middle class" with whatever you want to use to describe "population group that can use one income to support buying a home, having a spouse and 2.1 children, and saving enough to retire at 65".
The point is the massive increase in top level pay, not whatever term you are using to refer to the rest.
Some might say you have a renting class and a home owning class. And this relates to political discourse in a very real way especially on a local level where property taxes are concerned. I don’t think it’s fair to call the home owning class the “ruling class”. I’ll agree that the middle class is being destroyed, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it never existed. Even what they used to call upper middle class is a thing. These are not CEOs making 30x per OPs 1978 figure. But they make maybe 2x to 4x the average household income. (Think doctors, lawyers, certain types of managers.) their lifestyle will be very different from the renting class.
the middle class are the people who lived in all those american suburbs built in the 50s and 60s; those small, 2 or 3 bedroom houses with drab siding or brick facades that are an overrepresentation of the american landscape and lifestyle, despite the fact you've rarely ever seen one in a TV show or film. these homes were affordable to the average worker but now aren't; those are the homes of the 90%, the actual hard-working american population--the 'middle class.'

Because the communists were starting to win during and after the Great Depression and to keep them out of government, money was thrown around that created the middle class. And after the competition was destroyed, middle class became redundant and they reversed the wealth pump to extract the money out of that class.

We are not fighting people who work. That's over. We fight capital! Even the CEO pays more taxes than lazy "investors"
This is shortsighted. We need to fight capital effectively, and to do that we must fight those who actively defend capital, including CEOs.
It's the same reason why police aren't considered working class. Are they "people who work"? Definitely. But their function in society is to maintain the power of capitalists.
It's called middle income. There's no such thing as a middle class.
