There’s now, apparently, an epidemic of Christians who get on planes and begin preaching when they know they finally have a captive audience. Evangelist Whitney Lynn, one of the more notorious culprits of this, even said as much in a recent TikTok post: “I just love a captive audience.”

The fact that the sermons are unwanted doesn’t bother the evangelists at all because, for once, they have an audience that can’t walk away. And the hope that strangers might convert outweighs any concern that they’ll conclude Christians are lunatics.

There’s unfortunately very little airline staff can do to stop this. While there are rules regarding passengers who are disobedient or belligerent, preaching doesn’t necessarily cross a line. Flight attendants can politely ask them to stop, but I have yet to see any examples of plane preachers getting kicked off flights because they wouldn’t shut up.

Which means we’re just stuck with the possibility Christians may hijack a flight with their voices.

How is this not being belligerent? What if this was a MAGAt doing this (probably already is)?

If anything, this seems like a quick way for a fellow passenger to get annoyed and punch out the disruptive preacher. If this happened on a plane I was on, I'd clap for the person who decked the preacher. It really says something about how this "religion" is dying off if thos is a tactic they're resorting to.

100% if someone got up preaching Islam or Satan, they'd get kicked off and put on the no fly list.

"My fellow passengers, let's all say a brief prayer to the elemental force of air, which gives us lift."

Far more relevant than a shepherd from ancient Judea. WTF does a sheep boy know about airplanes?

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 12 points 1 hour ago

theres nothing they can do cause hes white and christian.

Get a muslim imam up there and I bet you they divert the airplane and have a tactical squad ready at the gate.

[-] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 3 points 57 minutes ago

Ohhh I've seen this in action before on the public bus. The response is usually "SHUT YO ASS UP, NO ONE IS TRYING TO HEAR THAT"

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 31 minutes ago

if an airline allowed this to happen, I would never fly with that airline again. I bought a ticket for a respectful flight, if they can't provide that...

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 33 minutes ago

Women are allowed to preach now? Don't they read their book?

[-] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 1 points 13 minutes ago

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. - 1 Timothy 2:9-10

[-] nednobbins@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 hour ago

I'm generally very respectful towards people's religions but I would heckle the shit out of these bastards.

If the airlines can't stop an evangelist from preaching, they can't stop me from blaspheming.

[-] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 3 points 1 hour ago

You start with "everyone's entitled to their beliefs," they harm you per their beliefs, and then you want to draw a line? Too late, you already gave them the blank check.

Christianity deserves pushback, not respect. It is a death cult. They don't respect you, they think you belong to their god. They will be happy when you die, pretending you are rewarded in heaven or punished in hell. There is no such thing as a christ, we are not born with sin, we do not require divine salvation (which comes at the price of complete subjugation).

Can we stop letting them kill us? People should be held accountable for their choices, including the choice to accept and repeat baseless claims. As a species, we need to mature out of superstition before it kills us.

There is this thing, it's called Active Noise Canceling or ANC. You can throw a rock in any direction and hit a pair of earbuds or over the ear headphones that have it and there are a ton of sub $50 options. Or for $25 you can pick up a pretty decent pair of IEMs that will cut out the outside world. Play some music, listen to an audio book, or with the ANC just leave them in.

Nothing burns a self righteous twat quite like ignoring them does.

[-] KC_Royalz@lemmy.world 2 points 9 minutes ago

I spent $300 on the blackshark gaming headset. One of the best and most comfortable headsets I've ever owned. And it has anc toggle.

I still wouldn't want to miss the opportunity though to tell one of these people to fuck off

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

ANC does not work well for non-predictive noise. It helps drown out background noise like engines and general "hub-bub," but for someone speaking to a quiet audience it will just lower the overall volume, not cancel it out. But, like you said, you can turn on music or an audio book to help ignore them, though.

[-] SarcasticMan@lemmy.world 3 points 47 minutes ago

In my experience when I have the ANC turned all the way up I can't hear shit. I have found a lot of it also hinges on the ear tips for buds but my over the ears block out the world. As with everything though users experience may vary.

[-] SalmonTractor@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 18 minutes ago

Good ANC cancels everything. It’s active for a reason.

[-] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

Apparently Whitney needs a reminder:

1 Timothy 2:11-12

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

[-] FoxtrotDeltaTango@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 hours ago

This will cause more people to become atheists, it’s because too many Christians don’t leave people alone

[-] KC_Royalz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Any chance they could be charged under hostage takers?

Seriously I haven't flown in years and doubt I will in the foreseeable future.

But omg I would be yelling every swearword I could think of to interrupt them

[-] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 1 points 30 minutes ago

according to UK rulings of late, this is probably terrorism

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 10 points 4 hours ago

So we're happy to have extremists stand up and spout religious nonsense as long as they're white Christians speaking English. Neat!

[-] tunetardis@piefed.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

It's hard to think of an industry that is more optimized towards the discomfort of its clientele than the airline industry. In terms of the evangelist sitting next to you, that's a symptom of a problem exacerbated by the ought-to-be-illegal practice of overbooking flights to ensure every seat is filled, thereby leaving no recourse for a flight attendant who may want to have the aircraft equivalent of having an elementary school student stand in the corner.

There needs to be some maneuvering room to separate belligerent passengers, though you wouldn't want to "reward" them by giving them extra space as a buffer zone. Or if this is inevitable, something would need to be done to make the time-out corner more uncomfortable than regular seating. But I have confidence they could come up with something? This is an area of expertise for airlines.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 20 points 5 hours ago

Can you imagine if a Muslim did this?

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Especially if they were preaching in Arabic!

I don't think it quite warrants a mid flight removal, but you certainly shouldn't be allowed to fly again and you should be removed if the plane is on the ground and it won't cause a delay.

Enjoy the boat/train ride back, you'll have a captive audience much longer.

If I weren't trans I'd tell someone to shut up if they pulled that crap while I was a passenger

[-] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 hours ago

Outside of the Sentinelese, everyone on the planet has heard of Jesus Fucking Christ. If anyone wanted to convert already then they would have by now. These performative assholes need to shut the fuck up already and leave people in peace.

[-] Taldan@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Every few years some Christian tries to genocide the Sentinelese too

They're fully aware the diseases they carry could wipe out the Sentinelese, and are fine with it. Terrible people

[-] Kirp123@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Luckily the Sentinelese are proactive and just pepper them with arrows before they can do any harm.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

But see, its okay, because they are blessed by jeebus and jeebus protects them immediately gets filled with arrows

No. Someone is getting removed from that plane. I am not paying for that. These airlines need to grow some fucking balls already.

[-] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 15 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

United will pull a doctor out while he's screaming and passing out but they just can't seem to anything about a blonde woman yelling about Jesus

I know it wasn't united in this article but still

This is a reminder to loudly play Disney music from your phone before you commit a felony so you at least aren't generating content for them.

[-] RustyShackleford@piefed.social 6 points 2 hours ago

It’s why I’m always ready to sing, A Whole New World. You would be amazed that statistically there’s always someone willing to sing out the Princesses half of the song lol.

[-] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 hours ago

Maybe Metallica. Lars Ulrich will go crazy.

One time on the NYC subway someone started preaching. Then a middle aged business man started counter-yelling about evolution and natural science. Then a third person started yelling that they all need to shut up.

It was kind of funny to watch, but also a 20 minute train ride with multiple stops is much lower stakes than a flight.

[-] Monument@piefed.world 68 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

So here’s how this played out in front of my bathroom mirror this morning:

Someone starts yapping about their god or whatever.
I loudly say “No thank you. Please stop.” while ensuring I have caught the eye of the nearest flight attendant.
I give them about 30 seconds to take their bows and sit the fuck down.
If they don’t, I move to the center aisle, stand up, loudly announce that they are creating a disturbance on the plane. I tell them for deeply personal reasons, the topic they are discussing is upsetting and unsettling to me, and if they continue, I will consider their continuation belligerence. I look directly at the flight attendant and tell them that it is their job to prevent passenger belligerence.
If I’m feeling charitable, I’ll mention that freedom of religion is also freedom from religion and that I’m about to freak the fuck out if they don’t shut up the wannabe preacher. And if they don’t, well, then nobody gets to be heard over the sounds of me screaming the account of my then 12-year-old childhood friend being molested by a youth preacher while I watched in the back of a church van.

So says the hero in the bathroom mirror that is devoid of consequence. We all know on this side of the mirror, I would be banned from flying and the idiot TikToker would get a gofundme.

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 6 hours ago

Shout out to the last two sentences for bringing us all back down to earth 😂.

You forgot to mention that everyone clapped though

[-] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 61 points 8 hours ago

I wonder what would happen if a Muslim tried to do this

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 hours ago

Yeah, if some brown dude gets up on an airplane and starts shouting out prayers to Allah, he'd be attacked immediately. I see no reason to respond differently just because it's a white woman and Jesus.

They'd land the plane at the closest airport, bring in the swat team and arrest them violently.

Evangelists do it on public transport all the time where I live.

IMHO they should be removed and banned from the service.
