June is widely recognized as Pride Month, but a handful of Republican governors have bestowed alternative titles that both supporters and opponents view as counterprogramming.

Without directly saying the idea was to replace Pride, the governors of Indiana and Tennessee rebranded June as Nuclear Family Month to celebrate units made up of "one husband, one wife and any biological, adopted or fostered children."

In Alabama, it's Strong Families Month, intended to coincide with Father's Day. Gov. Kay Ivey's proclamation says fathers are "the head of the household" and "homes led by a father and mother provide children with the structure and discipline necessary to succeed throughout life."

"Strong families" month

Lol the nuclear family is the weakest type of family

Have you ever seen how tight and efficient extended family is? Holy fuck

"Nuclear Family Month to celebrate units made up of "one husband, one wife and any biological, adopted or fostered children.""

Said the governors members of the same party as the 2-time divorced, 3-time married, pornstar-paying President with multiple baby mamas and rape allegations. And they thought they had the high moral ground all this time. They just make their own reality, don't they?

Pointless attacks on LGBTQ aside, this fixation on the elementary family (i.e. as opposed to the extended family) has been rather deleterious for our society.

It puts tremendous financial and temporal pressure on young adults and goes against the social structure that humans have had for millennia and still observe in some parts of the world. It should be very obvious why so many are delaying or altogether skipping parenthood.

Americans have been taught to isolate themselves. Personal responsibility, they call it

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

More like "divide and conquer"

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

The atomization works very well. Most even do it to themselves.

That's how good the programming is.

You'll see this kind of thing when someone says they - or someone else - are "too old for X" or when the begin sentences with "my generation...." or all the endless thinkpieces on boomers vs. Gen X vs. Y vs. Z vs. Alpha as if all these people are different species or something.

"Structure and discipline" sounds like code for beating your kids.

[-] ClownStatue@piefed.social 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That, and hammering down any dissent.

Doesn’t sound at all fascist. Not sure why it makes me think of The Wall movie with Floyd leading his political rallies.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Because it is

Gov. Kay Ivey's proclamation says fathers are "the head of the household"

Someone needs to ask her why her husband isn't running the state, or push the narrative that she can't be the legitimate governor since she's a woman.

[-] roguetrick@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago
[-] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's not very MAGA of her. She can't do that on her own, she's a woman! Clutches pearls

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Hell, maybe a country so obsessed with freedom ought to grant every household the liberty to decide who, if anyone, heads it, and what governance structure and makeup it contains.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

It's only a problem if it's not a fascist involved.

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

You can't point out their contradictions, they don't care. Telling her to get back in the kitchen fights their battle for them.

[-] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

fights their battle for them.

No, it doesn't. What is with this defeatist trend lately? We've just decided to no longer challenge what they say?

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Challenge it all you want. Telling them to stay consistent and keep women in their place is fucking stupid.

[-] tonytins@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

lolwut?

You can’t point out their contradictions, they don’t care.

Good thing it's just us.

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Sorry, you can point them out all you want, but they don't give a shit. Holding them to their contradictions just makes them fascist-er.

[-] LoveRainbow@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I blame Australia. They gave us Rupert Murdock and winter in june

[-] GraniteM@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

I fully thought that "nuclear family" was just a way of describing the most closely-related members of a family that all lived together, and that going further outwards (like in the nuclear electron shells I learned in high school chemistry), was a way of conceptualizing where more distant cousins would fall in relation to that core.

Now I'm hearing that it's some fucking prescriptivist, cis- and heteronormative term that is meant to exclude some types of families, and that is fucking bullshit. I'm not inclined to let the worst shitheads in the country steal the very concept of family like they've tried to do with tiki torches, Hawaiian shirts, and patriotism. Fuck that, and fuck them

[-] DetectiveNo64@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure the nuclear part references the 1950s, which is the time period they want to return to.

[-] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

All 3 of those other ones have also been problematic the whole time too

[-] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

The contradiction is strong with this. Their conservatism is essentially stealing & purposely changing the entire motive of the event. This is essentially the same as with BLM and WLM - bunch of manipulative lunatics.

[-] paraphrand@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You can’t “rebrand” a month. Every month has multiple things people have attached to it. Most days of the year too.

It’s definitely intended to be an opposing cultural event though. But like most conservative culture of this sort, it’s pathetic, and won’t really go anywhere.

Hell yeah it's moonshine day and fittingly also start over day. Let's go do something we have to start over after!

Ooh also veggie burgers

[-] roguetrick@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Kay Ivey is twice divorced with no children.

You really think a MAGA conservative would do that? Just go out in the world and be a gigantic hypocritical piece of filth?

[-] wasabi_noir@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

She’s a huge piece of shit for a ton of reasons, hypocrisy among them.

After watching the Alabama solution I want to see her endlessly falling down an up escalator.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago

I thought they were going to go with “Shame Month”

[-] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

That's already every month though.

In Germany, the far-right launched Stolzmonat (literal translation of Pride Month) to drown out queer pride with national pride. A queer influencer managed to have it trademarked and take it from them. Now queer people celebrate Stolzmonat.

Why don't we, in honor of Trump and his buddies, call June "pedophile month". Or "you should hit your wife month". Or "white people are superior month". Or "support your billionaires month". Or maybe something more close to US identity and history in general, including current events, now that the US is 250 years of disappointment: "war month". "Crimes against humanity month"? Oh I know! "Bring your guns to school month"!

"homes led by a father and mother provide children with the structure and discipline necessary to ~~succeed throughout life~~ use firearms properly when having a dispute at school."

[-] ClownStatue@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

While I applaud the sentiment, I think it’s too small. There needs to be a national movement to normalize recognizing Trump as “The Idiot.” It’s simple, classic (referencing Dostoyevsky in the most American way possible: incorrectly), kid-friendly… IMO, it’s perfect. My goal is until the day I die, when I reference “The Idiot” anywhere in the world, the stranger I’m talking to know exactly who I’m talking about.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

All bets are off the rest of the year.

The governors of Utah and Arkansas deemed it Fidelity Month, which emphasizes fidelity to faith, country and family — without comment on how those families might be comprised.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

July can be infidelity month, where we cheat to beat the heat

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Shit last june Boise Idaho had a straight Pride rally
