I always thought this attitude is exactly why Picard is so damn good at what he does. He has humility. He does not think of himself as the overarching hero of the story, he sees himself as one of but many players on the stage of life. He is the hero of story not because he tries to be, but because he does the right thing because it's the right thing to do. He doesn't think he's special at all, he thinks "this is just what you're supposed to do, why would I need to be praised for the default?" He doesn't see that specialness inside himself individually, instead he sees specialness in every person (human to gas-entity alike) he meets, he sees the brilliance of life, of all its different ways of being, and just sees beauty and the desire to support that beauty's healthy growth. That's how it always felt to me anyway, the reason he is the hero is because he's actually not trying to be a hero. This arguably goes for everyone on the Enterprise, but we obviously get much more of a focus on Picard throughout the series, as our Philosopher Captain.

Something along these lines is why I've always loved Star Trek and didn't get into other shows/movies as much (like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, etc.), especially as a kid. The crew of the Enterprise were just regular people, albeit hyper-competent, but still just people at the end of the day. They would combine their diversity of skills and overcome crazy situations. There was no savior or chosen-one, just people with skills and their own interests. It feels achievable for anyone to be an officer on the Enterprise if they put in the effort to be there. Not everyone can be a Jedi or a super hero. That's not to say those other stories are bad, but I always felt that's what made Star Trek special, and Picard's humility, I think, really showcases it. It feels like he would say, "I'm just a guy doing a job."

"he sees specialness in every person"

Excepting Wesley, of course.

[-] SnotFlickerman 6 points 3 days ago

I feel like Wesley must be a bit like Arthur Dent, he's just got some of the worst luck in the universe, and people are dismissive of him because of it.

Wesley having the worst luck in the universe? He's kickin' in the damn flagship because that's where his mom's posted, kinda banging the Captain. He gets to be an acting ensign and fly the ship, a posting people would kill for. And then he gets field promoted to a literal ensign and fly the ship for reals...

Sounds like you're talking about MCU Captain America

Except that for Picard "the right thing to do" is always diplomatic discussions and philosophical soliloquies that express his reasoning. (or, well, TV Picard anyway, movie Picard is a bit closer to Cap)

Homie fought a group of Nausicaans for fun. If that's dull... What does excitment look like?!

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Excitement for him is when he looks Admirals in the eye and makes them blink.

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

Literally laughs in the face of mortal danger.

What a bore.

[-] SnotFlickerman 5 points 3 days ago

Why does he look so much like Arnold Rimmer right here.

[-] Thorry@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago

Then she and Stewart carried that acting chemistry over to the X-Men series. Albiet, without the sexual undertones, more a mentor/mentee thing.

Have you considered it was a polite way of telling her to mind her own business?

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Seemed more that he was denying himself some personal joy in the face of duty, propriety, and an easy win.

[-] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 days ago

Fucking up that diplomatic mission over a roll in the hay with a fabricated partner would have been a bigger hit to his personal joy, no? Hedonism is actually a philosophy of self restraint and priorities, and Jean Luc selects his indulgences with surgical precision.

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Agreed on the first part. It's just who he is.

As for his "precision" I would direct you to Vash and Lt. Daren. Impulse occasionally got the best of him.
