According to Harvard research, eating oranges stimulates growth of Faecalibacterium prausnitzia.

This bacteria lives inside the human gut and generates serotonin and dopamine — 2 powerful molecules that elevate your mood.

Harvard is one of the top 5 research universities in the world. Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Where does he work ? Harvard.

I've had chronic pain and depression since I was a kid, I don't think oranges can fix me, but thanks for the advice, I'm sure it'll help someone that's better off.

So I can burn my rage off trying to peel all the damn with off while getting covered in sticky juice?

No, those are the fruits of manufactured suffering, not joyous wonders

[-] getFrog@piefed.social 2 points 1 hour ago

I don't need the serotonin and dopamine inside my gut, I need it in my brain. ..Will shoving an orange up my nose work?

[-] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 1 points 10 minutes ago

I used to take pieces of orange peel, bend them so the inside turns convex and inhale it through my nose, it helped me stay awake in class.

[-] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 1 points 1 minute ago

I do a similar thing but i bend the orange peel inside a short glass to spritz the oils, then occasionally lift the glass to my nose and enjoy.

Oh i forgot i also add ~80ml of whiskey, a squirt of simple syrup and 3 dashes of bitters first.

YSK is such a pale imitation of TIL. Please disagree, I've been baiting all fucking night and you all are way too chill. There is zero lively conversations on Lemmy. "but we don't have bots" the fuck you don't, in the mornings I see bots constantly importing reddit threads. I feel like I'm on fucking 1998 usenet. DEBATE ME!

[-] prole 5 points 2 hours ago

I've been baiting all fucking night

Go away, baitin!

I don't wanna be that guy, but I have to be fair and ask:

Why should I know this?

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 hour ago

Because you're in denial about your depression

[-] Sludge@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 hours ago

Because if you're sad now, but you want to be happy - you should probably eat an orange. It's a nice thing to know

[-] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

Yeah I know, but its not in the body of the post per Rule 2. Plenty of really bad YSKs that didnt belong here had the same thing and I called some of them out too. So in order to be fair I have to ask it here too, thats all.

YSAK: If you don't feel sad, eat an orange

Oranges are yummy and keep you from getting scurvy

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 2 points 1 hour ago

Remember shower oranges?

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 hours ago

I have never personally known anyone with scurvy... But yeah, they are tasty.

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 4 points 1 hour ago

You shouldn't eat people with scurvy, regardless of whether you know them.

[-] akwd169@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago

Thats whats known as anecdotal evidence

Ive never met anyone with ebola yet WHO just declared a global emergency

Apparently, most people getting scurvy these days are autistic and have strong food selection preferences so they just dont end up eating anything with vitamin c

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm sure there are some folks that got a little too into carnivore diets that have managed to serve the scurve

[-] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 14 points 19 hours ago

Oranges and other citrus fruit are also significantly acidic, which is hard on teef. So try not to go overboard, or at least rinse your mouth with water afterwards if you eat citrus regularly.

By the same token, do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. This gives more of the toothpaste's fluoride a chance to adhere, from my understanding.

[-] Eric 2 points 9 hours ago

It is an exposure thing, so you're better off eating it in one sitting rather than snacking on acidic things throughout the day.

[-] Steve@startrek.website 7 points 16 hours ago

Can I eat the juicy orang right after brushing my teefers?

[-] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 5 points 15 hours ago

Maybe save a step, and simply brush your teef with the orange!

[-] eleijeep@piefed.social 16 points 17 hours ago

Oh yeah emotions are just nutritional signals and gut-bacteria signals, I guess we're all just making up reasons to be ABNORMAL AND DIFFICULT.

THANKS HARVARD NERDS

[-] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 15 hours ago

Ever thought about eating an orange?

[-] Routhinator@startrek.website 27 points 21 hours ago

Advice from the little book of calm.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 23 points 21 hours ago

If you cant find an orange, pretend you're eating one, and then laugh.

The waves are scary if you don't read it correctly though.

[-] digdilem@lemmy.ml 5 points 17 hours ago

What if you're sad about the price of oranges?

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 11 points 21 hours ago

Does it work with (non-artifical) orange juice as well?

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago

If it's artificial it isn't orange juice.

[-] RedMari@reddthat.com 2 points 16 hours ago

Artificial juice can definitely be orange (from dyes) 🤓

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

😋

True, but here (Denmark) it is literally illegal to sell anything but pure fruit juice as juice, if it is made from concentrate it has to be labelled clearly, and it is only allowed to ad the amount of water that was removed.

If it has added sugar it is called Nektar.

If it has artificial flavors it is called Saft. Saft can also have added sugar. Saft also means Juice, English does not AFAIK have the words to distinguish between pure juice and flavored and sweetened juice.

IDK the rules in other EU countries, but my guess is that they are similar, but localized depending on language.

At least for me, all citrus fruits including their juices have an effect that they make me somewhat happier and help somewhat against depression. In the winter, I usually eat several mandarins a day.

[-] jared@mander.xyz 3 points 21 hours ago

If the bacteria can get what they need from it, i imagine the less processed it is the better.

[-] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 6 points 21 hours ago

Does this work with dried oranges?

I drink a tea that has orange in it so it would be awesome if it applies

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 2 points 14 hours ago

I mean, this research wouldn't be able to tell what about oranges makes these bacteria thrive, so would need a separate study for dried oranges or similar variations.

Having said that, your tea likely has so little actual orange in it, that it's very likely negligible either way.
There's probably just a tiny bit of orange in each tea bag to begin with, and it might even just be orange peel. And then it's just traces of that which go into your tea water, too.

Of course, drinking tea in general can probably also help with depression in some way. At the very least, it hydrates you and presumably improves blood circulation, which can help get you out of a rut.
