It's YouTube music, which is showing popular "podcasts" on its explore page. Must be just because it's popular because nothing in my algo on either youtube or YouTube music would suggest this shit.

Andrew Wilson vs. 20 large breasts

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 hour ago

Is Andrew Wilson that smarmy “you lick snizz” guy? The one who thinks he’s a more clever version of Trey Parker but he’s really just a shitty little weasel baby version of Steve Bannon?

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 47 minutes ago

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

[-] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 hours ago

You're in the explore tab and looking at a "popular" list. This is like looking at a top 50 list and being upset you don't like the top 5 songs.

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 48 minutes ago

The top 50 list is actually why I was there, I like to check it occasionally as I do like pop and some mainstream hip hop. Previously this popular section was just some hip hop podcasts/ videos that I ignored, but at least it was somewhat based on my music so it's not purely top 50 on the app, idk why it threw this one at me.

[-] stepan@lemmy.cafe 103 points 6 hours ago

YouTube algorithm tries really hard to make me far right every few months. It suddenly starts recommending me fox news and "progressives destroyed in a debate" type shit videos. Usually lasts about a day.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 41 points 5 hours ago

I bet somebody is paying for that shit to pop into your feed.

lots of the religious right think that if you just see it, you're going to agree and like, you know, become one of them. Which is funny because I find those kinds of content repulsive.

(Clint's Reptiles, though? oh yeah. dude's a legend.)

[-] Robonauta@piefed.co.za 11 points 4 hours ago

Or you'll fall for the bait, hatewatch and comment, which will help boost the video

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 8 points 3 hours ago

Nope.

Right click the dots “don’t recommend this channel.”

[-] X@piefed.world 7 points 3 hours ago

I practically live by the “don’t recommend” options, although recently I’ve started getting “block this video/channel”, which is peculiar.

[-] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago

The religious zealots would HATE Clint, because he has out his rational mind and scientific literature explanation of the universe before what the Bible says

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I mean, I wasn’t trying to suggest they don’t.

Just that his YT channel is alway good for a timeline cleanse.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 8 points 5 hours ago

Weird. Youtube doesn't do that to me. It is insistant however that I need to watch AI made videos about why linux is better than linux.

No, not a typo. The titles are usually along the lines of "Is Mint better than linux? Lets find out!"

Or

"Ubuntu just can't compete with Linux!"

And the one time I accidently clicked one of these videos, it was the most obvious AI slop you'd ever seen.

Maybe it doesn't suggest these right wing videos because they see how much Steven Colbert, and Last Week Tonight I watch.

Then there's the weird videos. Not AI. Just......weird.

Like the video of a teenager dipping a pickle into a jar of tostitos queso, and repeatedly saying "pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese...." while making squishing noises with the cheese.

But since I clicked it, and watched 30 seconds of it, youtube now reccomends me videos from time to time of this guy doing random things with pickles.

I miss when it reccomended the guy with the duck. The duck was cool.

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 6 points 5 hours ago

Mine does the same with the left and feminism. Which is fine. The only time it’s gotten sketchy is after my deep dive into the manosphere and their birth rate decline stuff.

[-] idegenszavak@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

it's just rage bait. I guess nazis get "woke" videos, or whatever they consider the other side. goog only cares about money. If they would want to convert you they would show only a bit more conservative each time and slowly get to the far side. Showing the total opposite hardly convinces anyone, basically the viewer would have to accept that all their previous believes were false, it rarely happens.

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

I guess I should be proud YT knows better than to try that with me?

[-] silverneedle@lemmy.ca 37 points 5 hours ago

Stop using streaming services and set sail

[-] phant@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

Yup. I bailed on my YouTube subscription this year and shifted to community radio and bandcamp.

[-] darvocet@infosec.pub 2 points 1 hour ago

Back in high school i knew this girl that went to band camp and let me just say she was freaky.

[-] jtrek@startrek.website 26 points 5 hours ago

You can also buy drm free music from sites like Bandcamp. I don't feel bad buying from smaller groups. Joyride! might actually notice the $10 from me buying their new album.

[-] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 41 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Lol is that chode wearing a Templar tunic? That is hilarious. Look at Me! I'm a KNIGHT when I fight all these WAHMEN

[-] einlander@lemmy.world 20 points 5 hours ago

Literal white knight.

[-] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 hours ago

Much like their knightly standing, it's cheap, flimsy and bought instead of earned.

It's why he looks like a 12 year old with a beard drawn on in markerpen

[-] astraeus@lemmy.ml 46 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Youtube is unironically, completely a tool of the far right. They’ve been pushing hate speech for the last decade+ like every other mainstream social media.

You can open a completely fresh account, look at absolutely anything at all, and your recs will have right wing slop.

People debate whether this was always intentional or just becuase it generates engagement, but imo it’s an intentional psyop because google is the devil

[-] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I figure its intentional because Google's executives know right-wing chuds and their politicians will always push corporate-friendly and ultrarich-friendly legislation like tax cuts, deregulation, and defanged government institutions.

But I'm in agreement that it's likely done with glee by YouTube's team, who seem as happy to promote right-wing chuds as they do to stamp out left-wing voices from the feed.

Example: I sometimes search for videos I've seen from subscriptions, and using the exact title of the video and the creator I still have to wade through three or four pages of search results with far different titles - scrolling past heaps of ideologically-opposite results as I go - to finally find the real video. That's no mistake, thats an intentional finger on the scale to hide leftist voices.

[-] bamboo 1 points 20 minutes ago

My assumption is the bias is unintentional, at least partially, and just the priorities of recommendations is weighed heavily to encourage engagement above all else, and stoking fear and anger drives engagement. Also the distribution of content could be a factor. On the right, it seems like everyone is trying to get in on the grift of advertising elk meat or trump coin to exploit their viewers, meanwhile high quality journalism and news is under funded. For every Climate Town or A More Perfect Union, there's tens or hundreds of right wing fearmongering videos.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago

~~Don’t~~ Be Evil (as possible)

[-] null@lemmy.org 38 points 6 hours ago

"The algorithm" pushes outrage content because it's so radioactive that it even gets you to post it here. It's just that potent.

[-] olof@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 minutes ago
[-] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 hours ago

It gets engagement from all sides. Advertisers dream come true.

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 6 points 3 hours ago

How capitalism claims to work: provide consumer with what they want

How capitalism actually works: provide consumer with what I want

[-] RBWells@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I don't get podcasts on my front page, clicked on podcasts and even "popular" didn't get anything like that. Joe Rogan and some other nonsense. Do they know you are a guy? That would be even more disturbing somehow, if they are only showing this to men.

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 56 minutes ago

This wasn't on the home page it was on the explore page, where it shows the top 25, new releases, trending etc.

I think my music interests would probably point to me being a guy

[-] mongooseofrevenge@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Does that say it's a 10 hour video?!

[-] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 hour ago

Yes, idk who can listen to this for ten hours and whether they have any brain cells before or after.

[-] vulgarcynic@sh.itjust.works 12 points 5 hours ago

Came in to this thread not knowing what an Andrew Wilson was. Still don’t but, feel better about it.

[-] bamboo 1 points 15 minutes ago

He's one of the Wilson brothers, the most famous of which was in Cast Away

[-] Fokeu@lemmy.zip 14 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

That's why I prefer to store my music locally. Soulseek is the answer

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 14 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Am I the only one who stores music just as discrete files, stored in my filesystem, in folders? Don't need any app for that. Works great. 100% cross-system compatible, works on every operating system and every device.

[-] otacon239@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I personally use Jellyfin because it means I can have a public-facing page with a login that I can access from any device with a web browser, including at work, without having to install software or use my VPN. I do organize everything meticulously on the backend, but it’s just way more convenient for portability.

[-] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 10 points 6 hours ago

YouTube Music is filled with AI generated songs with straight up hentai album covers

[-] Imaginary_Stand4909 2 points 4 hours ago

There's this god forsaken fucking channel that keeps coming up on my YT music that is some AI generated slop parody songs of real songs, and they all have raunchy/18+ themes and names. I used to have a screenshot cause I thought I would post it but then I never did.

Anyway fuck them, and fuck YT Music for recommending me them.

It's not an accident.

It's probably not a conspiracy.

If seeing that so much as pauses your scrolling, the algo counts that as "engagement," and that gets modeled into your profile for all of time. That's all it cares about, not incel stuff specifically... though rage bait happens to work very well, which is how these jerks make a living.

You might fix it with a new account from a different IP.

[-] Robonauta@piefed.co.za 2 points 4 hours ago

Surprised the incel used attractive women in the thumb, given they'll always complain that every feminist is fat and ugly.

[-] muxika@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

It's time to switch to invidious apps. Scrobble and gobble.

[-] Melusine@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 7 points 6 hours ago

Wtf with the pic ? How dumb must you be to take it seriously, right ? What do you think ?

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 4 points 5 hours ago

That’s how all the thumbnails work now. Even HCR started a lighter version of it post Trump win, and she was very basic, straight up content prior.

Thumbnails/algorithm have killed hobby channels, like woodworking and sewing, all of it.

We need an “anti” algorithm slam on YT to fix it, but I doubt there are enough creators/makers/whatevers willing to engage such an operation en masse. Journalism/podcasts have always leaned on the present state of the algorithm.

The other issue is the thumbnails exist as they do due to the predominance of phone users over laptops/desktops. It’s a size thing. The thumbnail is designed for small phone screen reading.

[-] astraeus@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 hours ago

Slop thumbnails for slop content
