The NRA is frantically running the numbers to see what will increase public fear, and thus sales figures for the gun companies, the most.

[-] EldritchFeminity 6 points 3 months ago

Ironically, thanks to the 2A loonies we don't really need them anymore. Can even rifle a barrel liner using a car battery and a bucket of salt water at this point.

Print, [redacted], repeat

[-] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

is there a more in depth write up on that process? that's pretty sweet

[-] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

What they are referring to is electrolytic etching (et al). Yes, you can get something approximating what is essentially tapping a thread, but I can pretty much guarantee you that anyone doing this in a shed isn't getting that level of precision and is, arguably, doing a worse job than not rifling at all. The folk who DO know how to do this have access to machine shops... and the tools to do it correctly.

Regardless, the real problem is making the barrel in the first place. Anyone who bought a mini lathe or got a drill press on facebook marketplace thinks they can do this. They chew threw mild steel like butter! And... there are a LOT of recovered guns from The Troubles in Ireland that fractured or literally exploded after even moderate use. Because you need proper alloys to handle the pressures of repeated explosions AND need to machine it in a way that is less likely to fracture/chip the parts containing that pressure. And drilling through THAT takes much better gear and skills that go beyond "Only an idiot wears gloves"

Also... it is irrelevant to the topic of Ghost Guns. Because, in almost all cases, barrels (and springs and levers) are not controlled items. So you print what is controlled and buy a parts kit for the rest.

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida … to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,”

  • Donald J Trump, Feb 28, 2018

[-] nicgentile@lemmy.world 64 points 3 months ago

In a twisted way, Trump is inadvertently trying hard to prove that more guns in the hands of untrained people with no background checks are a bad idea, something NRA was hoping to keep down. The cat is out of the bag now.

Anyway, fight girls.

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago

I get the irony but if he managed to actually enact some form of gun control in this country it would be the hardest pill in the world for people like us to swallow who just can't stand that fucking idiot.

[-] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 17 points 3 months ago

insert "Broken clocks" idiom

He'd be doing the right thing but for the wrong reasons and in this case, for more authoritarian control

[-] TehWorld@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

As much as it has zero chance of ever happening, he pushed for a max 10% on credit card debt. It’d all but destroy some banks, and people that dont have excellent credit would largely have zero credit availability, but I think it’s a good idea.

[-] matlag@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 months ago

Credit cards is a money trickling up system. Banks charge the sellers and give a rebate to their customers. Sellers increase their price to compensate for the credit card fees.
And then the poor are denied credit cards and pay the marked-up price on everything, or are given credit cards knowing they will fail to pay back on time at some point and then pay huge interests.
It would be better for most if that system disappeared or was at least severely trimmed down!

Let me translate this:

You (the Outgroup, meaning leftists) can't have guns. If You (the Outgroup) does this, We (the ingroup, the right) will kill you. You have no rights, We have no restrictions.

A federal agent did not kill a civilian. A Confederate soldier killed an American citizen.

[-] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 25 points 3 months ago

Guys... what is happening to your country?

[-] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 34 points 3 months ago

Not even sure if it's "my country" anymore

Rich white conservative men have stolen it, now I'm just a "subject" I guess... lol 🫠

[-] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

it looks like the start of a civil war. i hope it doesn't come to that, but it really looks like that's where it's headed.

[-] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 7 points 3 months ago

If only we were so lucky. Americans aren't going to stop this themselves, the rest of us need to arm ourselves and prepare to defend each other

[-] sturmblast@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago
[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 months ago

So... Americans should ask France for help again?

If we keep society together and martial law isn't declared before midterms then we might be good. We might go to sweep them without a civil war. But should martial law be declared or we don't get the midterms for whatever reason......

[-] discocactus@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Then it'll fracture along state lines, ie states that have the wherewithal to stand up against the feds. Which if they don't organize among themselves will be ... California. Maybe New York. And the little ones will be steamrolled. Although I'd guess the purple states that insist on more autonomy and are more difficult to police (AZ, Colorado, Montana, Utah) will just sort of fly under the radar.

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 23 points 3 months ago

They want to deny you even the chance to die on your feet. How's all that owning the libs feel now, huh conservatives? You love it when your daddy treads on you to tread on the people you don't like. Every Republican voter is a traitor.

The stupidity of right wing people who aren't rich never ceases to amaze me.

[-] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

You've heard of "a rising tide raises all ships", right?

These clowns honestly think "sinking undesirable ships raises the seafloor", and much prefer that methodology even if the gains are marginal.

I really think you all aren't properly focusing on the word "you" here. By "you" he means "not them"... So he essentially is saying "You libtards can't have guns, because us Maga-idiots will shoot you if you do".

[-] SouthFresh@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago

This is how the general public finds out that the NRA = Nationalist Racist Association

[-] 14specks@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 months ago

One of the main purposes (arguably the primary purpose?) of the "well regulated militia" was to ensure that settlers could attack and exterminate American Indian tribes during westward expansion.

If we hold ICE protests in schools every day then the feds will work to keep guns out of schools?

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

So MAGA, let's check the scoreboard:

  • America First - yeah, NO.
  • Release the Epstein Files - Who?
  • Lower prices on day one - tariffs are more important
  • 2A Champion - Only for who they choose.

So what are you still in for? The voracious Corruption? The Pedophilia? The virtuosic incompetence? The sending Americans to die in another endless foreign war to make oil companies wealthy? Paramilitary Death Squads having spontaneous firing squads in the streets?

This is what you voted for. Is this the free America you envisioned?

[-] InputZero@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

And everyone of them will say to you completely honestly, "it's a freer America than if I had voted for a Democrat."

At this point it's tribalism. Anyone who still supports Trump and the Republicans will always support them. Being Republican is part of their identity, it's the identity they share with their family, friends and coworkers. It's the identity of their community. They're not going to walk away from all that just because one irresponsible ICE agent killed one guy in a democratic city. They can't, they'd be walking away from everything they've known. Like their football team, they'll cheer their team on no matter what because it's their team. Simple as that.

[-] Smoogs@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

And you’re still saying you don’t have a king ruling over you , America?

He really shit all over your second amendment rights there. Wiped his royal butt with it.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 months ago

"Gun control" will continue to be a means of controlling undesirables while the fash base is still supported.

These current attacks are a good example. They're attacking protesters in non-fashy areas. They'll find similar ways of controlling guns for themselves.

[-] Azrael@reddthat.com 4 points 3 months ago

I highly doubt the US will ban guns. Firsy because there would be a lot of blowback. Secondly, one does not simply remove an amendment.

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 months ago

Well the first, fourth, fourteenth, and a few others are now defacto gone. Not sure what you are going on about.

[-] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 months ago

A constitution is just a piece of paper.

Did you know: In China, Freedom of Speech is actually in their constitution? But guess what actually happens in practice.

[-] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 8 points 3 months ago

They'll ban guns the exact same way they implemented gun control: with racial implications and fear mongering at the idiot level, and subtle winking to each other at the politician level. Then they'll slowly add on each time they 'find' a new group to demonize and target. It's 'first they came for...' in practice.

Trump has been contentious among the pro gun crowd. He has supported red flag laws and instituted the bump stock ban. I don't think this is him being inconsistent.
