Here, too, the sheer ridiculousness of the regime once again obscures its criminal intentions.

Statements such as these are then completely ignored:

We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement, just common sense, maximum lethality and authority for warfighters.

Pete Hegseth Source

This obviously means that all moral conventions, humanitarian principles, and international agreements are being thrown overboard—in other words, absolute ruthlessness, Israel-style.

This is the face of America today: a grotesque grimace of fascist malice.

Exactly... I feel like I'm the only one who paid attention to what they actually said, rather than just mocking the spectacle.

He literally said that the US cities will be their "training ground".

[-] tryitout@infosec.pub 48 points 1 day ago

This open statement that we're no longer concerned with adhering to Geneva Convention standards should have made these military leaders sick.

The contradiction that we're going to simultaneously hold all personnel to higher standards of grooming, fitness, etc while removing the obligation to adhere to any semblance of legal authority makes it crystal clear that cruelty is the point of all of this.

[-] Routhinator@startrek.website 31 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Don't worry, since many of the Geneva Conventions were in response to Canadian Military actions at war, if the orange turd sends troops for his 51st state bullshit, we'll come up with a whole new list of things for Geneva to add to the convention and his cronies can get some first hand experience on why those rules exist.

We're nice neighbours and allies, but don't become our enemy.

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

I think about half of the US wouldn't mind if you got a little pre-emptive with that

[-] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Ive already got some war crimes planned just in case. Keep those dog tags on, boys. Theyre gonna need it to identify your remains.

[-] InputZero@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

I mean that pretty much sums up MAGA and Trump's administration. "We're going to hold the groups of people we don't like to an impossible standard while the people we do like are immune to any consequences." Cause it's pretty obvious that Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump have no respect for soldiers other than their usefulness as pawns.

[-] oppy1984@lemdro.id 10 points 1 day ago

Geneva convention rules protect our troops just as much as they protect our enemy's troops. Openly suggesting that we disregard those rules actively puts our troops in danger.

I know they haven't actually said we are disregarding the rules, as of yet, but they certainly are hinting that's what they want. Other countries will take note, and issue orders accordingly.

[-] EvilBit@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

Jesus Christ that’s grim and inhuman shit. “Stupid rules of engagement”?? Stupid things like reducing civilian casualties and not turning the populace against you? This is how empires fall.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

For Hegseth, he’s horny to prove how tough he actually is since he has a chip on his shoulder after being outed as a “dangerous insider” before Sleepy Joe’s inauguration.

For Trump, he just wants to burn America down since we ruined his special secret time with little children by taking down Epstein and his feeble, ancient brain only knows narcissistic revenge. He doesn’t give a shit as long as we are as hurt as he was having his favorite thing taken away from him.

Notice how it’s not just “the worst people for the job”, it’s always “people with a chip on their shoulder about America”. It’s always the moronic shitbag crazies who can’t ever be wrong even when they clearly are, and now they’d fucking legislating it. They’re codifying “I say that I’m right and fuck you” into policy.

They want the kingdom all for themselves to manifest their false reality, and they’ll burn it all down if they don’t get their way.

[-] EvilBit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Dibs on some of the ashes!

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It's working so well for Israel, everyone loves them now.

Hey Pete I’m an enemy of your country and I might even be plotting to take out JD Vance.

Come at me you fucking sausage. I’m going to bring Jihad against the whole of America. 😂

[-] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

I feel you.

Where's Fitz when you need him?

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And how in any sane way does he think any of that is 'common sense'?

[-] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

They actually showed bits of both speeches on TV news around here (I'm not in the US) and these guys are like a clown version of the Nazis.

[-] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 74 points 1 day ago

"And if you don't like what I'm saying, you can leave the room. Of course, there goes your rank, there goes your future, but you just feel nice and loose, OK, because we're all on the same team. And I was told that, sir, you won't hear -- you won't hear a murmur in the room. I said, we got to loosen these guys up a little bit. So you just have a good time."

It's word-for-word part of his opening remarks. Don't worry - it rapidly becomes more incoherent from there.

To take some of Trump's credit, he struggled a lot and it was a mess even if mildly coherent.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

I don't remember all of it, but some of that is literally what he said.

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 47 points 1 day ago

I'd like to see the first line changed to "Everybody's calling them" because

  1. The generals didn't get to be generals without knowing when to keep their mouths shut.

  2. You don't have to be military to enjoy this crack. I'm definitely going to be part of that everybody.

And also

  1. Trump's favorite way of manufacturing and spreading lies is to say "Everybody's" and "People are" saying whatever it is.

I'm sorry, but... is this a Facebook meme? This is the oldest source I could find:

https://www.facebook.com/karl.j.martin/posts/would-very-much-like-to-believe-the-rumor-that-officers-attending-todays-hegseth/10231055132182749/

It's almost certainly not real.

I know it's not going to get taken down, but:

I can't speak for anyone else, but it was pretty evident to me that this was a joke

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

I dunno, it’s presented like a news bite to me.

[-] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

They just adapted incel / Maga recruitment methods to try and reel in the tops of the world, for real? Those work on incel / Maga, because they're downtrodden and insecure, but arrogant, want not to be, but don't have the insight or the ego to permit self improvement.

People don't get to the top with a personal failings like that, being angry at the world, types, don't ever get to top jobs, they were talking to grownups, thinking their magical words will cause them a world wide army. Holy fk I can't decide if thier levels of God syndrome are hilarious, in the face of the level of danger this presents. I mean, they're not dangerous in the sense that no one would listen to them, other than the dickheads like them. But, damn!

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago

So something about this I don’t get. Didn’t they relax the standards because they couldn’t get enough people for Cyber Security Command? Do they just think these people are gonna magically start working out?

Oh that’s right, they don’t think.

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Cyber security is pansy shit, real men win wars with rifles /s

[-] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

And no I didn't say thank you

[-] criss_cross@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Please tell me this is actually happening

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago

I haven't seen any confirmation. I think it's just a joke meme.

Wtf how do you even synchronize applause? Those top military leaders must spend hours of their days practicing clapping.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Watch North Korea, trump watches them alot

[-] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Did you watch the video? It wasn't synchronized at all, it was just normal (if overly enthusiastic) clapping.

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

I've watched this video half a dozen times now and slowed it down to .25 speed. That's some of the most synchronized clapping I've ever seen.

[-] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

How to say you weren't on the drum line without saying anything about drums, haha

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah they should definitely get those generals on the drum line. Those dumbasses are out there planning military strategies instead.

[-] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I dunno, it doesn't look that way to me. Like, if they were trying to be synchronized, then they did a really bad job.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Wouldn’t that be great if I could have the faith in our military leaders to mock trump instead of saving their own positions and paychecks by bending the knee.

[-] switcheroo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Good god, he looks like a freaking dunce in that photo. What an embarrassment

[-] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Nah, that's just an accurate physical description of the two.
