What legacy? A podcast and some college lectures? I’ve never heard of the guy before all of this, I can’t help but think there may be some other Americans more deserving of honors.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 49 points 1 month ago

I've taken shits more deserving of honors

[-] Eldritch@piefed.world 32 points 1 month ago

There were people killed the same day far more deserving than Kirk. honoring him insults them all.

[-] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

What?!? when did SpaceNoodle's poop die? 😢

[-] Insekticus@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago

With how over-the-top all of their admirations and praises are of this cunt, his assassination just reeks of false flag by the administration to start a war. I truly wouldn't be surprised if Trump, Vance, or Thiel ordered this.

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

If they did I think they'd have planted some kind of evidence to tie the assassin to the left. But maybe that seemed too obvious as a false flag idk.

[-] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

The pawns think he was just a devoted Christian and was killed for his faith, so they now have to proclaim their faith harder to stand up for themselves

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 53 points 1 month ago

95 Dems declared themselves neonazis.

Never forget. Never forgive.

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago

It's just political strategy to avoid getting dragged. This legislation is passing no matter what they do. By voting en masse like this they eliminated a cudgel the Republicans were going to use against them. There's a lot to be pissed at Dems about but the idiocy going on here is not them coming out of the closet as neonazis, its Dems backed into a corner doing what they can to get out of it. Congress is always stupid like this, it's how the game is played.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 47 points 1 month ago

Capitulating to Nazis is how you win the game!

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Tactics and strategy is how you win.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 month ago

Bold strategy. Let's see how letting Nazis do whatever they want plays out for them, Cotton.

[-] jjagaimo@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago

History has shown time and time again that appeasement doesn't work and yet here we are again

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Yes, and if Democrats had the votes to stop this that would be relevant. Until there's more Democrats in Congress the Republicans get to keep doing what they want regardless. In this instance, for a piece of completely irrelevant legislation that has no real impact, the political context of this moment requires them to make a dumb vote. Republicans put this to vote exactly to create this situation where people like you are mad at Democrats instead of Republicans. It's the consolation prize for not being able to smear the no votes after the Democrats were smart enough not to fall into their trap.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 month ago

If it's completely irrelevant and has no impact, why vote for it? All they accomplished was making us mad at them, they walked right into the Republican trap and not a single Republican voter is going to vote for Democrats because of this vote.

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Because voting no will be used to smear them. That's the whole point, it forces Democrats into the position where you can hit them with brutal attack ads around this topic if they vote no. Democrats obviously are not neonazis Charlie Kirk supporters who have just been waiting for this day, its a silly accusation. They are just in a shitty situation where either way they vote sucks and they have to choose the least bad option. It happens all the time, especially when they are outnumbered as they currently are. Politics is dumb and messy like that in Congress.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 month ago

Voting "no" would be used to smear them among the Republican base... who would never vote for them anyway. Who cares?

Voting "yes" is now going to hurt them among the Democratic base, and if you recall they lost the last election because they pissed off their own base! In what world is pissing off their own base the "least bad option"? That's how they always lose!

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

If a dumb vote about a pointless thing is enough to turn off a voter then I don't think they really were in the party base. They sound more like someone who is looking for an excuse. Certainly they are someone who doesn't understand what "the perfect is the enemy of the good" means, and doesn't understand how dire the circumstances will become if Republicans retain the House. The reality is shit is super fucked and fixating on stupid things like this is exactly what Republicans want. It is exactly why they made this vote happen, it was intended to smear and divide. Now here we are seeing it in action.

I really wish you guys would understand you are being played by Republicans. They do this to divide us because they know we're weaker that way.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Look guys I only voted to put a Hitler Statue that everyone has to give a big wet kiss on the lips in front of door to the House cause it'll pass anyway. Can't you see I'm only doing this cause I'm scared I'm not getting reelected and not because I'm complicit? I'm one of the good guys, unless someone asks, in that case I'm willing to compromise.

Anyway here's how we can beat Trump in the midterms, if he lets us.

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

You're exaggerating and misrepresenting for dramatic effect. Hyperbolic nonsense like this doesn't contribute anything positive.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 month ago

Did you forget what happened in the last election? They lost because they pissed off their base.

You can't just scream at the base and call them stupid and demand they vote for Democrats. You have to appeal to them or they will stay home, like they did in the most recent election. That's just how politics works. If Democrats keep doing this shit, they'll lose.

Couldn't they also have not voted?

Tactics and strategy only works for those willing to use power when they can.

This is enabling those who they purport to be against

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

This is a meaningless vote, whether they voted yes or no had no impact on the outcome and the outcome is not significant. Another day honoring a piece of shit in America has no real impact on anyone, we've got plenty of them already. All it did was defuse the trap Republicans had set for them, and piss off people who don't understand how Congress operates.

[-] limer@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

It seems like beyond the pale for me.

I’m sure I’m not unique in that sentiment.

[-] lectricleopard@lemmy.world 41 points 1 month ago

Bend the knee, kiss the ring, lick the boot.

[-] Fyrnyx@kbin.melroy.org 30 points 1 month ago

95 House Democratic Traitors, more like.

The one who is Trans Rep is the one that tugs me the most here. You now have a motivated group after this assassination, who is now branding your group as 'terrorist' and assuming now transgenders are mass-shooters. Yet you're voting to honor the legacy?

I don't understand this stance about what integrity and honor that there is, to co-exist with bigoted people like that, who work against your interests. Do you think this is going to alleviate things? No, it won't. They'll be calling for your head next, McBride, hope you feel dumb about this.

[-] Carnelian@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Eh. Maybe she’s just trying to keep the peace. From what I understand she’s had some success in keeping anti trans legislation at bay in her jurisdiction. It could be she feels that making a stink over Charlie now would make things worse.

Not that I agree, it just must be tough being an openly trans public figure. Right hates her no matter what, left expects perfection since she’s so visible. Hard to criticize her over this

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

Appeasing your oppressors doesn't make you a hero

[-] Carnelian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Do we have any heroes in American politics at the moment?

[-] limer@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

No, because the definition of a hero involves not being part of the cynical political class.

Heroes must emerge from the working class

This ain't no place for no hero

[-] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

No, but it could keep her fighting for her constituents and their rights a little longer. They might just be being careful with what battles they pick. We all know trump would have ordered a national day of honor even if it didn't get a single vote.

[-] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

having morals and principles does though. something lemmy could not ever understand in any sort of capacity

[-] reallykindasorta@slrpnk.net 28 points 1 month ago

Bunch of cowards as always

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

And they're about to hand Donald his government again, even though they have the power to shut it down.

Dems are fascist too.

[-] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Nah. They don't have the backbone or conviction to be fascist.

[-] bagsy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

95 traitors and cowards. american leadership is weak and pathetic.

[-] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

all hail saint charleton of kirk

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I’m changing my voter registration to independent

[-] comfy@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago

Sure, and you should also engage in political action outside of electoralism if you aren't already, because it's blatant at this point that the game is rigged.

We know from the first term that Trump is willing to use political violence to stay in power, and this time their backers came in with a plan. Voting is not a solution, merely one tiny action.

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

lol this bill is just a bait from the republicans as it seems. If you vote yes, you vote for making Kirk a hero, if you vote no you vote against stopping political violence (the other part of the bill condemns political violence) so republicans can say "see left supports political violence". If you are a democrat you lose in both cases (which is the better of two bad outcomes is debatable). Fucking politics is and has always been a game of thrones serving the interests of the powerful but it is even more so with republicans in charge.

[-] Scirocco@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I have been having the same reaction as y'all over this all day.

I went to see how my rep voted (had a pretty good idea already) and incidentally found the actual text of the bill

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hres719/text

The front half of it is a load of fascists dick sucking, of course

But that's all in the "whereas"es which are not the meat of it.

The main bits are a fairly level condemnation of political violence and assassinations.

I was all set to fire of a testy email and donate (more, again) to the primary challenger.....

But then i read the statement on the resolution and why he voted for it. Not sure I agree, but there is some logic there.

https://hoyer.house.gov/media/press-releases/hoyer-statement-resolution-charlie-kirk

All of the votes are shown on this page: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/119-2025/h282
