So, 1st ammendment is being suspended?

[-] Zron@lemmy.world 90 points 3 days ago

The first amendment has never protected people from losing their jobs. If I go in one day and call my boss an incompetent, micromanaging asshole, I’ll get fired. I can’t just yell first amendment and keep my job.

Now if you call your representative and tell them they’re an incompetent, cowardly, fascist piece of shit, and then you get arrested, well now that would be a first amendment issue.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago

unless they’re being fired because the president wants it that way

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

Unfortunately, most places in the US are at will employment, so it doesn't really matter what was said, if an employer wants you gone, even if it's due to outside pressures, they just have to say the word.

[-] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

^ this - don’t sign at will contracts - push back (easier said when self employed)

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 64 points 3 days ago

It is weird how "free speech" is there for the right, but not anyone else.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago

All non-fascists need to start punishing the fascists for their speech. We've been way too tolerant for way too long. Shout them down, ostracise, refuse service, etc.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I remember when Huckabee being denied a cheese plate or Rand Paul being followed by people asking him questions had them quaking in their boots and pretending they were being terrorized for such behaviors.

Imagine if it was a coordinated effort to just merely ostracize and verbally challenge these people? God, they'd be in a fetal position. They really do believe they are their god's gift to humanity and NO ONE has any right to question them or push back even if ever so mildly.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I don't just mean Huckabee and Rand Paul. I mean everyone with even so much as a whiff of MAGA about them, no matter how much of a nobody they are. I don't care if it's as mild as a little old lady in line with you at the damn grocery store check-out conversationally mentioning "hey it's a shame about that man on TV being murdered, right?" Berate her until she fucking cries.

America is becoming a Nazi bar and it's time to kick them all the fuck out!

[-] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago

We just ran am experiment on tolerating hate speech. Instead of protecting other speech, it endangered it. Experiments over, time to act on it

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 47 points 3 days ago

Teachers, just like every American, should be able to say what they want in their off time, especially politically. This is just another disgusting move by our country.

[-] TwinTitans@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Canadian nurse was fired for anti trans post in her off time. It’s a bigger problem than people might think. Maybe the solution is stop posting online? I don’t know. Punishment for peoples personal opinions on the personal time/accounts is pretty dystopian.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Having a political opinion and hate speech are two different things. Teachers calling for deaths and nurses calling for the elimination of human beings rights should be subjected to scrutiny.

This is not a black and white issue.

I agree with you we should error on the side of caution and it is dystopian that something you say in a forum away from your job could cause you to lose it. What a strange world we live in.

Canadian nurse was fired for anti trans post in her off time.

Teacher -> personal opinion on politics = no intersection between job and statement. Nurse -> personal opinion on somebody else's health and body autonomy = huge intersection between statement and job.

Pretending to not see the difference only makes you look worse, and an eight year old child would be able to break the argument using nothing but a sharpie and a piece of paper.

Hate speech crosses a line. There are exceptions to the first amendment. People can get sued for defamation. People can go to prison for making threats or conspiring to commit a crime. Hate speech directed at a protected class should also be punished.

1990s - don't put your name on the internet.

2000s - don't put your name on the internet.

2010s - it's cool to put your name on the internet because Zuckerberg says so

2020s - Fascist regime is suppressing all thoughtcrime.

“It has been brought to my attention that some Florida educators have posted despicable comments on social media regarding the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk,” said the memo, signed by Florida education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas. “I will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior.”

Oh shut the fuck up, you fucking chode. Please, kindly, go fuck yourself, loser.

Most of the teachers, under threat of unemployment, are from the fucking Red Run neo-Nazi Oblasts. The Blue States should offer them employment.

when there's a school shooting, it's always a tragedy. when someone dies in a school shooting, it traumatizes people ∴ it's a tragedy. when the target of a school shooting is not a child, we get to breathe a sigh of relief. gonna be honest.

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

There was a school shooting the same day and we celebrate some podcaster rather than the children that are gone. It's fucking stupid.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

it's statesia and there were only two school shootings that day?

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago

Lol this is a trial run for Trump's death. It won't prevent us from celebrating. Fuck em.

As an adjunct myself, wanted to see how widespread it is but this doesn't seem to be. We're usually first on the chopping block, but a dozen firings isn't very many overall when there's thousands of people teaching. I think similar happened when we celebrated Luigi, too, and both are pretty popular opinions with students.

Still, always be mindful of your online footprint and what you say in front of students in particular. You're dealing with whole groups, so even if it's a 90% popular opinion, you'll get one asshole who may report you anyway. That includes religion, too, which is especially tricky when you're an atheist teaching psychology and have to address shit regarding free will, evolution and why we have guilt and such.

But hey, we're pretty fucking free to say what we want on Lemmy, it's so obscure that I'm not even sure the government watches it.
