I love Daft Punk so much. I hate that I never got a chance to see them live. I have the album Alive 2007 on repeat right now. (I say earlier stuff in the title because I didn't care for the album Random Access Memories.)

Who else would you recommend I listen to? Especially if they're still producing music. I love their loopy, sampled sound. Any other bands do something similar? Identical isn't necessary, adjacent is fine.

I don't believe there is a "next daft punk" as of yet but I would consider the following artists relatively daft punk adjacent. Certainly worth checking out.

Flume

What So Not

Gesaffelstein

RL Grime

Rustie

Jungle

Chet Faker

Die Antwoord

Be aware of Die Antwoord controversies and them being horrible people.

[-] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 16 points 9 hours ago

Justice is up there for me. Haven't disliked a single one of their albums yet.

[-] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

This is the answer I would choose too for something that sounds most like Daft Punk

[-] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 hours ago

I really like The Glitch Mob but not sure if they're similar to daft punk.

[-] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Glitch Mob is a lot more bass-y and dubstep-y compared to Daft Punk, imo

[-] tuckerm@feddit.online 8 points 10 hours ago

Rumor is, any time two Frenchmen are in a room with a keyboard, there is a small chance that the next electronic duo will form from the interaction.

Until then, it's probably Justice and Ratatat. Check out Marc Rebillet, too. The rare "one-man electronic duo."

[-] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

Marc Rebillet

The legend. I mean he's fun for a while but after that while you start to see patterns and it kind of got old for me.

[-] tuckerm@feddit.online 5 points 9 hours ago

True, I don't listen to him for several days in a row like I do with Justice or Daft Punk. But I love him in bite-sized pieces, and tracks like Your New Morning Alarm make me smile every time.

I saw him at Bonnaroo a couple years ago and everyone in the crowd was having such a good time. At one point, he's running around on stage in his bathrobe (of course), and his robe got snagged on something. So he just took it off, and was running around in his underwear yelling, "SOMEONE GET ME A ROBE! SOMEONE GET ME A GOD DAMN ROBE!" Then he made a song out of it.

My friends who enjoy Daft Punk all love RAM and I, like you, really didn’t dig it. There’s a good song or two but the rest really don’t jive with me.

[-] PodPerson@lemmy.zip 4 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Pretty Lights

Flying Lotus

Parov Stelar

St Germain

Wax Tailor

Portishead

All of the Mushroom Jazz series by Mark Farina (he didn’t create the tracks but will give you lots of artists to segue to)

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 7 hours ago

I wouldn't call pretty lights up and coming. He headlined a festival I went to fifteen years ago. But I'm going to check your other recommendations cause I haven't heard like half of them. Thank you!

[-] PodPerson@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

Sorry - didn’t know they had to be up and coming. I wouldn’t call most of the artists on that list that, but definitely worth checking out.

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 6 hours ago

Also I'm completely wrong, the post did not say "up and coming" I must've hallucinated it

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 6 hours ago

No apologies needed homie! I'm just an incredibly pedantic person

100% go see Air on tour right now. The Moon Safari tour might be the closest thing to peak Daft Punk shows but obviously the chill side of it. Incredible vibes at these shows with amazing stage production.

Les Digitales Rhymes - Röyksopp is still active - Mirwais Ahmadzaï production - Basement Jaxx - The Avalanches (crazy amount of samples) - Danger - Red snapper (jazzy) - Dead mau5 ( not for me but the certainly took some the daft punk blueprint)

Of course Justice, Underworld, DJ Shadow, Fatboy slim, chemical brothers, Orbital, LCD Soundsystem

[-] mcbenavides85@piefed.social 10 points 14 hours ago

Moon Safari is a masterpiece.

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 2 points 4 hours ago

And that’s even an understatement. Moon Safari is in the Mount Rushmore of the genre.

[-] AlexisFR@jlai.lu 1 points 12 hours ago

What genre are all these artist? I thought EDW but searching for EDM playlists does not give me anything similar to these artists.

[-] flux@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

They are very different genres. But most likely Daft Punk have danceable music that can be traced back to Chicago house. After disco people stared incorporating synth /electro sound into dance music into the 80s. Chicago house DJ Paul Johnson is the first name mentioned in the Daft Punk song "Teachers". During the 90's French house became very big. Searching 90's or 2000's French house will get groups close to Daft Punk.

[-] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Believe nu-disco is the answer.

[-] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I wish Air was coming to a city near me. Tragic.

[-] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

Yeah looks like it's only a north American tour. That's a shame. Most people aren't willing to go to the US right now, including me.

Mine was in the mid2000s. “Danger” released “11h30” which is an absolute banger that, at the time, nothing came close to sounding like it. Would recommend!

[-] sbv@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

That's an amazing track.

[-] felsiq@piefed.zip 6 points 12 hours ago

Nightcall by kavinsky isn’t exactly what OP is looking for imo but absolutely worth a listen anyway

[-] Feddinat0r@feddit.org 3 points 13 hours ago

This.

The whole edbanger crew is worth a look

[-] TootSweet@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Porter Robinson is probably worth a listen.

Justice, no contest. Watch the full 'Iris - A space opera' live concert on YouTube and you'll understand why.

[-] TheAlbatross 12 points 14 hours ago

You mean who is the next genre defining band combining modern electonica and classic Disco funk into bona-fide club bangers?

Dunno... lemme know when you figure it out tho

[-] SnotFlickerman 8 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

There's a whole genre of Future Funk out there.

Macross 82-99, Saint Pepsi, Conscious Thoughts, AnTgry, Yung Bae, id chief, Castle Carousel, to a lesser extent Flamingosis...

[-] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Isn't Saint Pepsi vaporwave? I remember Enjoy Yourself or whatever that song was called, with Mac Tonight as the music video.

Also, nu-disco is also a thing. Not sure if disco funk is more disco or more funk, as I'm not very familiar with the intricasies of disco

I was a fan of Funky Panda on YouTube a few years back (~2019), mostly for electro swing, but they also uploaded future funk and nu-disco. Not anymore, though. Funky Way FM as an online radio appears to have come back, though

Edit: here be the Funky Way: https://funkyway.net/

Edit 2: there's also an album credited to Kyo-2, Macintosh Plus, Saint Pepsi and Saint Germain on Spotify and the first song is entitled "VAPORWAVE THEME SONG." Not sure if it is legit, as I'm not familiar enough with vaporwave. I recognise two names, though

[-] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Well Future Funk was sort of a “fork” from Vaporwave from what I remember. Very DIY attitude based and similar visual aesthetic but it’s more about sampling Boogie music and then compressing the hell out of the kick - to where it’s really more in the vein of Filter/French House - but usually a bit more lofi production wise.

[-] SnotFlickerman 6 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

Not really the same but Chromeo.

Chromeo is so fucking funky and danceable.

Also just some random Future Funk suggestions...

Macross 82-99, Saint Pepsi, Conscious Thoughts, AnTgry, Yung Bae, id chief, Castle Carousel, to a lesser extent Flamingosis...

[-] sem 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I recommend listening to Thomas Bangalter's other projects.

I'm not sure if Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had side projects too.

[-] PodPerson@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

Track down Club Soda - it’s great.

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 6 points 14 hours ago

Not sure I'd phrase it that way but you'd probably like:

Wax Tailor

Ratatat

Justice

Flying Lotus

Paza Rahm

Two Fingers

Claude VonStroke

[-] paper_moon@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago

Man, I haven't listened to Ratatat in yeaaars. Thanks for the memory!

[-] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

My friend took me to Ratatat and busted out a cannabis pipe before we went in. It was the second time I ever had THC. It was SURREAL.

The only experience that tops it for me was rolling tits at Tipper, with a custom stage and projected visuals.

[-] SnotFlickerman 1 points 14 hours ago

So sad Ratatat is gone. Nothing since 2015. Just one more way the world went downhill since then.

[-] melodious_thunk@lemmy.ml 4 points 14 hours ago

I don't know about the next Daft Punk, but i share your opinion of earlier vs later and have been digging Framewerk's stuff lately. Give it a whirl: https://framewerk.bandcamp.com/album/the-anthemic-collection-limited-release

[-] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Roosevelt and Parcels aren’t as electronic but have very similar sounds. Daft Punk actually helped produce a Parcels single.
