I'm a musician and that doesnt play much any more. I actually found something from the good old days of reddit when cleaning my parents house... A CD.... That was sent to me by a stranger from reddit as a music swap. I think the idea is awesome and as much as I love the ability to listen to everything streaming, sitting down and listening to that CD invoked amazing memories I forgot about, and I even found a few bangers I didn't vibe with all those years ago. Long story short, I wanna do music swaps with people and not just playlists, actual physical music. Don't know if anyone will read this or how I would even physically send someone music now, but if you're interested post or DM me and we can figure something out!
Guitar here.
Maybe we can decide on one sub we can all inhabit? There's not enough folks on Lemmy to keep niche communities alive. If we just pick a general (any instrument) community it might be functional. Instrument specific communities could branch off when they have enough people
Yeah that's why I recommend subbing to a bunch and over time the winner will reveal itself
- Used to play viola back in school. Lost it around fall 2019, early winter 2020 during a forced move.
- I currently have an acoustic guitar I got recently. Really need to actually play it now that I have time instead of letting it sit in the case. Learn it instead of procrastinating.
- I should follow music communities to find more music, but I don't because IDK.
- I don't post because I feel like whenever I do post on a site like this that I need to respond to everyone who replies, which adds mental gymnastics I don't wanna play with .
Bassist and vocalist here! Production and mixing too. Really love synths too.
Massive rush fan, if its not obvious
I play a bunch of instruments at least good enough to jam around a campfire. I also am in the middle of designing and building an analog drone based instrument with multiple oscillator types, a swimming pool of onboard effects, filters and other doodads.
I found a synth diy community the other day that I plan to start posting to soon.
Your description of a "swimming pool of onboard effects" has reminded me of a project I did in university (for an engineering and product design degree). We were each given a laser pointer and a light sensor and told to make a musical instrument with it. After a chat with a music professor we decided to go for a somewhat loose interpretation of "instrument" and shone the laser through a bowl of water. The bowl itself was clear too, so the laser shone right through and we could pick up its position on the other side. We then mapped the x and y axes to pitch and volume so that splashing the water turned into a kind of random whalesong generator
Useful for actually making music? No, not really. It was a lot of fun though
Are you aware of "Look Mum No Computer" on YouTube? If not, you may find it useful.
I am. His channel, Paul in the Lab, and Music From Outer Space are where I tell people to start if they show an interest.
Guitar for 25 years with some bass and drums in there too, play in one band atm but always on the lookout for new stuff. I should play more.
It's a shame the music communities here aren't as vibrant as reddit but far less people over here. I live in hope that it'll get busier!
Sub to communities you wanna see pop off and that's how they get more active.
I've played guitar on and off since I was about 7, but I'm still amateurish at best. I got some lessons in my late teens from a co-worker that got me good enough to bash out chords in the church band. Played bass briefly in a band after quitting the church in the early nineties, but didn't really touch an instrument again until the divorce in '09. I've been playing ukulele since then after getting some cheap ones for my kids and learning it myself to teach them and fell in love with it. I used to go busking with it 5-6 days a week singing and playing covers when I was unemployed and broke, but that ended about ten years ago when I had to get a real job.
I've never considered myself a musician, though.
Guy plays guitar and uke. Teaches kids music, gigged every day. Doesn't consider himself a musician. I think you're a more active musician than most professionals lol.
I appreciate the thought, but I've been around actual musicians, and I'm not that.
I have only the most rudimentary knowledge of music theory, have only ever written one song, which was terrible, and didn't actually end up teaching my kids ukulele.
These days I just fiddle about with my ukes on my couch. If I ever get over my inertia, I've been thinking of putting up some youtube clips of my covers, but don't hold your breath.
I'd love to have a music theory comm. Like discussing some passages and analyzing things beyond the basics
My partner is a professional musician and maybe this would finally get me to convince her to join Lemmy
I would happily contribute to this, lmk if we decide on a specific community to all join in on, I think it would be cool if it was musician's interests in general. Like I'm an audio engineer as well as a guitarist so it would fun to have a space to have deep conversations about both, as well as other musical niches people have an interest in.
Bedroom guitarist with too many pedals checking in
You probably don't want to know about this then: https://www.ehx.com/products/tri-parallel-mixer/
Three parallel effects chains... Absolute overkill.
Long time musician here!
Back in Reddit days I did prawl through music-making related communities, but found that discussion tended to stick to pretty trivial spheres. Figured that general music maker communities don't work. You want jazz drumming / pure data / microtonal techniques level specialised communities to keep it interesting. Otherwise it's just 'recommend a beginner-friendly daw' over and over.
I'm a bassist in a few bands. Wish there was more bass discussion here on Lemmy.
If you're into prog rock, check out one of my band's songs: frog rock
I love acoustic and classical guitar. Never could make electric work for me. Maybe had I learned jazz things would be different. Just too hippie
I think finding an electric guitar tone you like is half the battle.
If you're just playing clean guitar through a clean amp, it's probably going to be boring for the most part.
Crank the gain up on the amp and/or get a few choice pedals, and you can make it sound like anything you want.
I like fucking around with delays and reverbs sometimes, and just make crazy ambient soundscapes.
For someone that's keen on classical I would suggest going a very different direction for electric. Low gain, humbucker pickups, neck pickup, flatwound strings, plenty of mids in the mix, and only a gentle amount of reverb for that super-rich soft jazzy tone. A guitar with a bigsby tailpiece is great for applying subtle vibrato to whole chords too, which is not easily achieved on a classical
Lol to telling someone who's playing acoustic that a clean tone is boring
I said "if."
And there's a big difference between electric guitar with clean tone, and an unamplified acoustic.
I play the guitar, but mostly I just learn tricky songs and I try to play them. I would happily read about music though.
I’m a semi-professional choral singer! I very frequently sing on a volunteer basis in a symphony chorus with a professional orchestra. And also sing with a smaller 12-person choir, really tight harmonies and blending. It’s a lot of fun.
Sometimes I get paid, but that’s rare.
I’ve gotten to sing some pretty awesome stuff (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, video game concerts, Verdi’s Requiem, etc. etc. etc.) and gotten to meet some pretty cool people (including my wife)!
Yay, another choral singer! My degrees are in music but I don’t play my childhood instrument anymore so instead I sing in a chorus. People think singers aren’t good musicians as a rule and that’s total garbage. We sing some really difficult stuff as a chorus and you have to know what your note sounds like before you sing it; you can’t rely on just knowing the fingering for your instrument. It’s so much fun but also a great mental challenge. I’m thankful to have it in my life as my intellectual musical outlet.
My degrees are in music
Sometimes I wish I had better training. I grew up on Suzuki violin, but I never really studied theory. I survive on talent rather than skill, and am very thankful for the skill of those around me!
People think singers aren’t good musicians as a rule and that’s total garbage.
It is wild to me the way some of the orchestral musicians treat the chorus. Most of them are friendly and complimentary, but some of them sure seem to think we’re beneath them. Could just be that they’re not very socially adept, I suppose.
We sing some really difficult stuff as a chorus and you have to know what your note sounds like before you sing it; you can’t rely on just knowing the fingering for your instrument.
And this can be so terrifying for some entrances!
It’s so much fun but also a great mental challenge. I’m thankful to have it in my life as my intellectual musical outlet.
I agree 100%.
