This might be a kind of unpopular opinion but in a way I'm glad that schools are going to have to confront this issue. They're very well placed to do so.

While teachers being abused obviously have my sympathies, the school system can't ignore this problem and then act shocked when this behavior appears in schools.

  • training for all teachers on how to manage this behavior and this trajectory for kids
  • social media literacy should be part of the curriculum for kids in all years
  • awareness programs and training for parents
  • exposure to more appropriate role models who can help young boys understand how to interact with women
  • advocating for regulation of social media - it's just bullshit that youtube et al gives this bullshit a platform
[-] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago

You say that, but then they trot out “boys will be boys” time and time again.

[-] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago

Not necessarily.

Female teachers are resigning over this.

[-] funkyfarmington@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

All of that is irrelevant without administrators being on board. And that will never happen.

[-] Policeshootout@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

I'm not sure why you assume this but my wife and I both work in high school (grade 8 - 12) which is part of a small, fairly conservative community. Our administrative staff all the way up to superintendent are extremely supportive of these types of things. Inclusion and awareness is very important at our high school for everyone. We also have social media education introduced in multiple classes. About 3/4 of all staff are female and neither of us have witnessed this type of misogynistic behavior. Our struggle is racism, antisemitism and intolerance.

I'm not saying that misogyny isn't a problem, I experience it on instagram and YouTube all the time and the comment sections are insane. My point is that administration does care, we are encouraged to include this type of education in our curriculum and we talk about it during staff meetings.

[-] Canadian_anarchist@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Unfortunately not all administrators care, and some can be part of the problem. The school I work at has some endemic culture issues because of the "old boys" club that has been formed by the principal. I am glad that you have supportive administration, but that is less common than it should be.

This is only a symptom of a deeper rot, and it's worldwide

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

I noticed it too. My friend in India reports the same polarization issues we have in the US. Society is digressing. Why?

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

It's complicated and whenever I post the reasons I get harassed for weeks, including mods and admins, but here goes:

We are in the middle of a men's mental health crisis, it has been going on for more than twenty years now. The causes are multiple, economic uncertainty, lack of positive male role models, social media bringing lifestyle envy, governments and services constantly favoring women over men for funds and support despite those needs already being abundantly covered already, lack of social mobility, depression about the lack of future prospects

And add on top of this EVERY FUCKING TIME men call out for help in need, the entire world comes down on them and tells them 'solve you're own problems, you made patriarchy, you fix it yourself' all the while women get RIDICULOUS amount of social support from homeless shelters, food pantries (the rules for mothers and fathers are usually different as they assume people claiming to be fathers are liars and need to prove, but women never lie and get all the support they ask for no questions)

Society has been geared to devalue men, and when men complain about it we are told 'It's your fault, fix it yourself'

It's deliberate social manipulation by 3rd wave feminists and conservative think tanks and they spend a lot of time and effort making sure everyone sees it all the time

You get downvoted because your conclusion is "let's blame it on women!"

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 2 days ago

Yeah, men face issues, but they're all kind of byproducts of patriarchy. And a greater rate of poverty isn't one, as far as I know.

We seem to have summoned an incel.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

If that's what you took away then it's true what they say that media literacy is dead.

Gamergate was the genesis of our current wave of violent incels, which was a reaction to some pretty fucking heavy handed takeover of traditionally male spaces with no attempt at coexistence by 3rd wave feminists feeling their oats

And they literally gave platform for Bannon's goons to meme us into fascism. Tate, Rogan, both of those assholes and dozens more cater to the audience that gamergate gathered.

All of you dismiss it as just boys being angry on the internet till you remember just how many fucking right wing mass murders have happened in the last 10 years. That level of dismissal is EXACTLY why some boys are now believing rape is fine and justified. I want you to consider that level of degeneracy and the environment needed for it to fester.

For decades men have been told that all their problems are their own creation, and that they should go about solving it themselves. This puts progressive men in the shitiest place possible because they are the ones with the least power in today's society. They sure as fuck aren't getting support from non-progressives, AND getting mocked in their own spaces. And don't you fucking say it's just reddit there's tons of examples every day on lemmy

YES the ridiculous and deliberately antagonistic antics of 3rd wave feminism from 2007-2012 DEFINITELY gave the alt-right a platform by dignifying their movement and giving them tons of press and legitimacy instead of having the fucks arrested like they should have been in the first place .BUUUUUT NOOOO every motherfucking 'feminist' vlogger had to absolutely INUNDATE youtube with how terrible it was that boy liked boobs in games and how they should feel bad about it and maybe we should start charging people with felonies for killing video game characters (YES THESE WERE ALL TOPICS LEGITIMATELY DISCUST IN THE TUBESPHERE) and of course that caused a lot of puberty driven little bois to SUDDENLY RALLY behind this movement to stop removing boobies from games

And then at the same time the Georgia fucking radfemme commitee decided to put forward a bill making masturbation legally equivalent to a back alley abortion and everybody talked about it like it was some gocha for 3 fucking years till COVID shut everybody the fuck up

Yes I'm blaming 3rd wave feminists, but NOT exclusively. I also blame pubescent teen boys and their inattentive parents, I blame right wing propaganda shops for meming Bannon into relevancy, I blame billionaires for stealing everyone's financial well-being, and I SURE AS FUCK blame ignorant idealists like you and nearly everyone else on lemmy for mistaking the caricature of the right wing gamer boy in your head for the real thing

Things are going to get a fucktonne worse than they are now, they barely even ramped up industrial murder yet but they will, and sooner than anyone guesses. And people like you are a part of the problem, and your deliberate ignorance of that doesn't make your hands any less bloody

[-] GameGod@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Dude you need to chill out, make friends with some women, and touch grass in the real world. You're a left-wing incel basically, from what you've written, you just don't realize it. Just unplug from the internet for a while and chill out. Whatever happens on the internet is usually not reflective of the real world, just keep that in mind.

Edit: I wrote exactly 12 words to you, and that makes you think I'm an "ignorant idealist" and have blood on my hands.............?

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Son I've been married for 30 years and my kids are already out of college.

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 3 points 3 days ago

I think part of it is that we've changed the role for women in society without changing the man's role as quickly. We've also seen the destruction of being able to address men as a group in need of their own safe space.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

And I think you have been overwhelmed by propaganda into thinking 2 incomes per household is normal

[-] Amuletta@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Two incomes per household has actually been normal for most people in most countries throughout history. The postwar nuclear family where only dad has paid work is a brief 40 year blip in western countries.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I block all liars, reconsider your life choices

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

In a lot of areas, two incomes per household is the only thing that keeps it a household. There is no need for propaganda.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Only because of the world wars normalizing full employment. Before then only the most poverty level households required two incomes and even then it wasn't universal

The propaganda is what has normalized it in your mind. The last 3 generations proves what happens when you let kids raise themselves

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

No, it's because late stage capitalism requires prices to go up all the time, while salaries stagnate. People are spending way more of their income on housing these days, and even with two incomes they're living paycheck to paycheck. Why would anyone need to be propagandized? It's literally dual income or bust.

[-] jimjam5@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Either dual income, or one person of the household better be making a mid-to-high six figure income.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Thank you for repeatedly proving how effective propaganda is by repeating the normalization phrases over and over again, while also denying that it exists

You are the perfect patsy and I'm sure you are supremely convinced this is all of your own intention.

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 3 points 3 days ago

But if it were to go back to one income households, would only men have jobs?

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I never said it needs to be gender linked but there needs to be at least one parent at home at all times

If that means 2 incomes with both parents working half time for the same pay, then so be it.

Don't really appreciate you trying to pigeonhole me tho, but it's all I've come to expect from lemmy

[-] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 5 points 3 days ago

I'm not pigeonholing you, I'm responding in context to what I said earlier.

A lot of the definition of being a good man and husband comes from being a provider; a definition that hasn't changed while the definition of a good woman and wife has increased to helping to significantly provide for a family.

If you don't change the social acceptance of men doing other things than provide for a family, it is going to cause significant issues for those men who aren't working.

[-] Angry_Autist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah you don't change a culture by wishing about it and this just isn't the decade for the world to care about mens' needs, and no one is interested in portraying men in nurturing roles outside of women geared media. On the other hand assholes like tate and rogan are gaining record breaking audiences of angry disaffected men tired of being marginalized while being told they aren't being marginalized.

I'm pretty sure the competing ideologies of fascism and 3rd wave feminism are going to ratchet up the gender war for the forseeable future and anyone in the middle is going to get stomped by both sides.

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I had known about those guys for a long time, but their thing is so goofy. I never expected it to be the meme ideology that takes off.

At this rate, conservatism in 20 or 30 years might just be about male supremacy.

[-] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago

20 or 30? That's the reality now. Did you hear about "your body my choice"?

[-] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 days ago

I mean, religious sensibilities, fiscal conservatism, free markets, federalism and lots of other things have more sway. And there's no shortage of older women in the Conservative parties right now, if probably less than the men.

If you haven't, watch the Netflix series "Adolescence". It shows a little bit the extreme of the current state of the incelsphere.

I need to watch it, I’m a sucker for the one-shot
