It should be distanceraptor / time

Otherwise the raptors cancel and you just get velocity.

[-] Botzo@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Distanceraptor over time equals velociraptor? Sounds like evolution to me.

[-] Natanael@infosec.pub 4 points 2 months ago

It tripped, so it became a revolution instead

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Good catch, but following that it should actually be displacementraptor / time. Speed is based on distance traveled, velocity is where you started vs where you ended up. If you run complete laps around a track your velocity will be 0 when you're done because your displacement is 0 (start and end points are the same)

[-] tate@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 months ago

Also a good catch.

Speediraptor just sounds silly. Not nearly as scary as velociraptor.

[-] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

And it should be displaceraptor, dropping the last syllable, otherwise the quotient would be velocityraptor.

[-] Kraven_the_Hunter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

I was gonna share this meme, but now it just seems silly with all of these factual errors.

[-] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

The cumulative pedantry is almost all the fun.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Otherwise the raptors cancel and you just get velocity.

I mean, yes? Weren’t they super fast?

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago

They seemed fast, but it's just because they worked in packs, so the one that got you was there the whole time.

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Nothing personnel, kid.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Clever girl.

[-] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

No, you would get veloci.

[-] MoreZombies@aussie.zone 1 points 2 months ago

Only if you treat it as (distance)(raptor) / (time)(raptor)

[-] FewerWheels@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

Without a direction it is a scalar not a vector, so it is speedraptor.

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Right. We need to replace distanceraptor with displacementraptor.

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

It’s velociraptor in 1D world!

[-] svcg 7 points 2 months ago

I think you mean:

velociraptor = dpositionraptor/dtimeraptor

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Once you come to terms with it in time you will see this meme is just a derivative of the Positionraptor meme.

holds up a tiny box

We can approximate part of a velociraptor as a tiny box, yes it is imperfect to say replace the arm of our velociraptor with a small box, but what if we tried again with tinier boxes?

You would still be unsatisfied with that mimcry of a once pristine velocriaptor illustration but you might be slightly less satisfied this time around assuming you had infinite patience in terms of time.

Now imagine we repeated that experiment on you, slowly replacing more and more of the velociraptor illustration with tinier and tinier boxes... at some point we would reach the limit as of our boxes becoming infinitely small...

STAY WITH ME HERE - I yell at you from within a crazed scientmathist labcoat

We could graph how much your disatisfaction with our tiny box velociraptor rip off decreased as we decreased the size of our tiny boxes we used to immitate the original kickass velociraptor illustration with... and if we extrapolate that out to the most spirit-raptor ultimate culminating moment in infinity in euphoric release of the tiniest boxes you could ever imagine, we can recreate the velociraptor using only tiny box positionraptors and a set of initial conditions that the velociraptor illustration was created with through the magic of CALCULUS.

I look up and realize everybody walked away 15 minutes ago - Damn, wait everybody wasn't enthralled by that stupid overly long math joke?

[-] handsoffmydata@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

Timeraptors sound terrifying

[-] FewerWheels@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Velociraptor = positionraptor/time. As written the raptor cancels and you get a scalar not a vector, simply speed.

Edit, there is no operator before the raptor so probably best not to cancel.

Scalar: speedraptor = distanceraptor/ timeraptor

Vector: velociraptor = positionraptor/ timeraptor

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago

It's the delta of the positionraptor.

[-] rustyricotta@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

I would 100% watch a b-movie named TimeRaptor. Can you just imagine the glory of a time traveling dinosaur?

[-] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

What would be the relevant xkcd here? https://xkcd.com/135/ is the closest I can come up with.

[-] limer@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago

Maths were a lot harder before Arabic numbers

[-] ZDL@lazysoci.al 1 points 2 months ago

... Really? Please explain.

[-] W_itjust_works@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

What in the Philoso-raptor is going on in these comments?

[-] retrolasered@feddit.uk 2 points 2 months ago

Velocirapture

[-] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

speedraptor = distanceraptor/time

velociraptor = distanceraptor/time/time

[-] Marz157@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

That's an acceleraptor. Velociraptor = displacemeraptor/time as mentioned above.

[-] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

aaaahhhhh, indeed. ty

[-] bblkargonaut@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

The image looks like a Deinonychus to me

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah. Velociraptor is much smaller and more bird-like.

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

it has no feathers, it's not a deinonychus, a velociraptor, or anything closely related to them

it's actually just the sillouette of a random movie monster

[-] bblkargonaut@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago
[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

Actually it would be more along the lines of classical physics.
