It feels less in my control, and at least tells me what I say.

People who say data are wrong, period. It's data and always will be.

[-] SonicBlue03@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 months ago

I agree. I've always said this.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

But is it pronounced "database" or "database"?

[-] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Database, obviously?

[-] slippyferret 50 points 2 months ago

Great. Now I’m unsure of how to pronounce database as well.

[-] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Easy fix, just say datum five times fast

[-] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Uhhhhhh......that guy should see a doctor. His blood count is very low.

[-] aaaa@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

How many bloods should a healthy man have?

[-] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

I don't know the correct answer, but I think some would be a good start.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

I definitely say both depending on the sentence and how it feels coming off the tongue. I also alternate between the and thee. No idea why, but it happens organically.

[-] Reyali@lemm.ee 8 points 2 months ago

Route as well. Depends largely on if I’m talking about routing Internet traffic or Route 66, though.

[-] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 14 points 2 months ago

You say data, and I say data. Let's call the whole thing off.

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 7 points 2 months ago

It’s like when people pronounce mana like mana, it’s very annoying.

[-] stickyShift@midwest.social 2 points 2 months ago

Pronounce like what? Mana-goose? Or Mana-in-the-middle?

[-] topherclay@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I had a comp sci teacher pronounce "data" and "database" differently. Drove me up a wall. I don't even care which way you say it, just make it the same ffs

[-] LaoisheFu@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

No he was right; it's data and database. 100%

[-] JTskulk@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
