It feels less in my control, and at least tells me what I say.

[-] slippyferret 47 points 2 days ago

Great. Now I’m unsure of how to pronounce database as well.

[-] RvTV95XBeo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

Easy fix, just say datum five times fast

[-] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

/ ˈdeɪ tə/, /ˈdæt ə /

/ ˈdeɪ təˌbeɪs /

People who say data are wrong, period. It's data and always will be.

[-] SonicBlue03@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago

I agree. I've always said this.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

But is it pronounced "database" or "database"?

[-] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Database, obviously?

Uhhhhhh......that guy should see a doctor. His blood count is very low.

[-] aaaa@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

How many bloods should a healthy man have?

[-] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

I don't know the correct answer, but I think some would be a good start.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

I definitely say both depending on the sentence and how it feels coming off the tongue. I also alternate between the and thee. No idea why, but it happens organically.

[-] Reyali@lemm.ee 8 points 2 days ago

Route as well. Depends largely on if I’m talking about routing Internet traffic or Route 66, though.

[-] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 14 points 2 days ago

You say data, and I say data. Let's call the whole thing off.

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

It’s like when people pronounce mana like mana, it’s very annoying.

[-] stickyShift@midwest.social 2 points 2 days ago

Pronounce like what? Mana-goose? Or Mana-in-the-middle?

[-] topherclay@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

🎵life is unfaiiir. 🎶

[-] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

And potato and tomato and strawberry and aliuminium.

[-] LordGimp@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

Hana mean what mana mean and gana mean that too.

[-] algorithmae@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 days ago

I had a comp sci teacher pronounce "data" and "database" differently. Drove me up a wall. I don't even care which way you say it, just make it the same ffs

[-] LaoisheFu@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

No he was right; it's data and database. 100%

[-] MolecularCactus1324@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago
[-] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I assume OP intended to force daytuh base, but I hear dada base fairly often. I don't know if it's more regional or more field related

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I say it either way depending on how I feel at that moment, because people around me use different pronunciations so they all sound fine.

[-] not_woody_shaw@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

There's no y in data or database. The only source of confusion is that Star Trek character weirdly dipthong-ing his name.

[-] voracitude@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Instructions unclear, day-tay-boss

[-] JTskulk@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Bongers will say "dodderbase" unironically though.

[-] josefo@leminal.space 3 points 2 days ago

metadata is the one that fucks me up

[-] ccunning@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I think you mean datumbase

[-] Logh@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

You say data and I say data…

[-] Grimtuck@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Datum Data Date

[-] terminhell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago
[-] 0ops@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago

Don't caall meee daughta

-the database probably

[-] Trex202@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

The only difference between daughta and daughter is the last letters

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
