WHAT IS THIS? A PASSPORT FOR BLUE WHALES??

[-] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 2 points 33 minutes ago

They somehow never watched Idiocracy

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 points 39 minutes ago

probably for giant aliens when they land in toronto for the first time.

[-] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

There are correct. That is way too big.

[-] UnderFreyja@lemmy.ca 41 points 7 hours ago

I'm no Canadian passport connoisseur but when were they red? My old one from 10 years ago is blue so I'm not sure what that's about?

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 1 points 14 minutes ago

I was wondering, if it's perhaps relatively common between nations for passports to be red, but from some very quick image searching that doesn't really seem to be the case:

  • US blue
  • UK blue
  • France red
  • Germany red
  • Spain red
  • India blue
  • China red
  • Brazil blue
[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

No one ever said it was red.

[-] Wilco@lemm.ee 3 points 3 hours ago

But they said it wasn't red. So one would question when they were.

I think I get it. They are expecting the passport to be red like the flag.

Admire that you did this. Believe it or not, a lot of people on Lemmy have a hard time pointing out their mistakes. Commendable.

[-] Cenotaph@mander.xyz 2 points 7 hours ago

I do not think they have ever been red

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 11 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

At that size of a passport, in an international emergency, you could use your passport as a shelter or flotation device .... is it also bullet proof?

[-] Sibshops@lemm.ee 17 points 8 hours ago

Why blue? White with red trimming would be nicer.

[-] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 17 points 8 hours ago

Iirc, you can only choose red, blue, black, and green. Maybe other colors are possible, but not preferred (I can see a white passport looking pretty rough after a couple years, if you’re a heavy traveler). No idea why they wouldn’t stick with red though.

[-] Grabthar@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

You can see the text on the front of them for what they are for. Blue are regular passports for casual travel. Red are diplomatic passports for high ranking officials. Green are special passports for senators, MPs or government workers on official business. White temporary passports are usually issued abroad where a Canadian citizen has an urgent requirement to travel but doesn't have a passport for whatever reason.

[-] LilB0kChoy@lemm.ee 5 points 7 hours ago

I believe red is usually reserved for diplomatic type passports.

[-] altasshet@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

Swiss passports are bright red fwiw.

[-] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 hours ago

Singapore?

And the EU have burgundy which is red-adjacent

[-] LilB0kChoy@lemm.ee 4 points 6 hours ago

Unless I'm mistaken, that's a Canadian passport pictured and in Canada red (maroon) passports are diplomatic.

White are temporary passports for Canadian citizens outside Canada who require passports but their regular passport application is being processed.

[-] Twitches@lemm.ee 6 points 7 hours ago

You guyses don't think that might be a bit large for travel /s

You can’t see the forest for the r’s

[-] expatriado@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

i think 2 Rs would be a mistake, 3 or more intentional

[-] match@pawb.social 4 points 7 hours ago

we're almost up to a fiverest

[-] weird@sub.wetshaving.social 5 points 8 hours ago

I made a mistake initially but you know, mistakes are just happy little accidents

Why are passports still a booklet? Everything is digital now. We don’t need stamps or visas in the passport anymore. It serves no purpose.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 46 points 9 hours ago

whoop my phone just ran out of juice, guess my passport is valid, eh?

[-] argh_another_username@lemmy.ca 4 points 7 hours ago

I never said it had to be an app or a card in your phone’s wallet, although it’s not a bad idea. Passports have chips now. I just think it doesn’t need to be a booklet anymore.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

It's probably more to do with being compliant with other countries' systems. The US has passport cards, but they only work with Canada and Mexico. I'm sure that has to do with some agreement we made with them.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 4 points 7 hours ago

They still physically staple your visa in there or use stamps to register entry in addition to registering things digitally.

[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 8 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

There's an rfid chip in EU passports

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 2 hours ago

Does it? The IDs have one, but the passports are also still booklets, aren't they? But then if you stay within the Schengen area, the ID is enough anyways. I even been to the UK once with just my ID. Before Brexit ofc.

[-] Windex007@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago
[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

And US passports.

[-] bandwidthcrisis@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I had to verify my identity with a UK government app recently, and the app scanned my passport's RFID!

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 2 points 7 hours ago

I just want it to be wallet sized and tear/water resistant, so like a typical plastic ID card.

[-] Gerudo@lemm.ee 1 points 6 hours ago

The US has a passport card option, but it's only applicable to US, Mexico, Caribbean and Canada.

[-] oktoberpaard@feddit.nl 1 points 29 minutes ago

In Europe there is a credit card sized identity card which is valid in the EU and EFTA.

[-] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 16 points 8 hours ago

because sometimes the power goes out

[-] argh_another_username@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago

Nah. My mother had to stay more than two hours in a line in Atlanta’s immigration because the system went down.

[-] UnderFreyja@lemmy.ca 8 points 7 hours ago

There's plenty of countries that use stamps still. Also, collecting stamps is fun.

[-] macaw_dean_settle@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago

Then they should make an app for Windows 10, because I use Windows 10 Mobile for my phone.

The Lumia series are still my favorite phones ever. I just wish they had baked in Android support. Fun fact, they had fully functioning versions with Android play store in testing, and it worked very well. Then Microsoft decided not to pursue it, or couldn't negotiate a contract with Google.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

They have chips in them.

[-] desktop_user 3 points 8 hours ago

sentimental value of stamps

[-] UberKitten 2 points 8 hours ago

plenty of countries still use them
