whoop my phone just ran out of juice, guess my passport is valid, eh?

There's an rfid chip in EU passports

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago

Does it? The IDs have one, but the passports are also still booklets, aren't they? But then if you stay within the Schengen area, the ID is enough anyways. I even been to the UK once with just my ID. Before Brexit ofc.

And US passports.

I had to verify my identity with a UK government app recently, and the app scanned my passport's RFID!

I never said it had to be an app or a card in your phone’s wallet, although it’s not a bad idea. Passports have chips now. I just think it doesn’t need to be a booklet anymore.

It's probably more to do with being compliant with other countries' systems. The US has passport cards, but they only work with Canada and Mexico. I'm sure that has to do with some agreement we made with them.

They still physically staple your visa in there or use stamps to register entry in addition to registering things digitally.

I just want it to be wallet sized and tear/water resistant, so like a typical plastic ID card.

[-] Gerudo@lemm.ee 1 points 12 hours ago

The US has a passport card option, but it's only applicable to US, Mexico, Caribbean and Canada.

In Europe there is a credit card sized identity card which is valid in the EU and EFTA.
