Bishops take off diagonally to the new world to find other boards to civilize.

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 points 15 hours ago

Going to be hard for black to develop when they are guarding the rear

[-] 2910000@lemmy.world 16 points 16 hours ago

Keep a bishop hidden behind the toilet until your opponent forgets about it

[-] Ace120C@sopuli.xyz 9 points 16 hours ago

always works even in regular chess :v

[-] Prime_Minister_Keyes@lemm.ee 4 points 15 hours ago

Huh, I never noticed the toilet on a chess board.

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

I should replay Portal 2...

So bishops, rooks, queens are OP. Knights are less useful due to limited range, and pawns are just as expendable as before.

[-] Ace120C@sopuli.xyz 8 points 21 hours ago

YOOOOO, definitely trying it out then!

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 7 points 20 hours ago

I thought this would be like donut chess, where your moves wrap around - but nope, infinite means infinite

[-] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago

If it really is infinite then it will be difficult to prove that there are only 2 players.

oh my god im nerding out so much about this idea

it would have to be like Kung Fu Chess where instead of being turned base it relies on individual piece cooldowns and quick thinking. with a multitude of players on a large map i think it should probably be point based instead of focusing on checkmate, using the general rules of material (pawns being worth 1 material all the way to queens being 9 material).

i think bishops and other pieces should all have a limited range of how far you can go at once. can you imagine playing a very close match (it being cooldown based it would probably be a lot higher adrenaline) with someone and seeing someone starting to close in on you to vulture the aftermath?

edit i think your pieces should be tethered to a max radius around your king? thatd probably be interesting and balance it some

why am i nerding out about this and wishing I could make this a real thing lol

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 1 points 16 hours ago

I dont think the board is initialised randomly, there are set seeds

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 17 hours ago

If moves wrap, aren’t you in checkmate at the very start?

[-] tetris11@lemmy.ml 4 points 17 hours ago

Woah, good point. First move (reverse queen teleport) basically wins the game

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 16 hours ago

I was thinking just king takes king. Which is not something you would usually see. So black is already in checkmate before white even moves. Though white is also in checkmate.

[-] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Yeah I was gonna say it’s an Instant draw.

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Sorry for the inner horse girl moment, but it's spelled whoa

[-] puppycat 1 points 8 hours ago
[-] nimble 37 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Now imagine multiple boards and you've got the MMO onemillionchessboards

[-] Ace120C@sopuli.xyz 9 points 21 hours ago

ah yeah true (might try this with my cousin for the memes)

[-] grue@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago
[-] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago

What the absolute fuck were the tile layers thinking there? Jfc.

I wonder if it's somewhere that's heavily Christian. I know some builders that always leave a small "mistake" in patterns cause "only Jesus is perfect"

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 7 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Even if the pattern were laid out properly there's no way it's "perfect". There would be slight differences in height, alignments, etc. It comes down to a matter of how close you look, but it will never be flawless.

Imagine the ego on someone like that who thinks their work would even come close to the supreme creator of the universe's level. They either think they're far more skilled than they are, or that their deity is far more flawed. Either way it's nonsense.

[-] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago

Yeah, I didn't say it made sense, but I know at least a half dozen builders that abide by that. They don't do it even remotely this bad, usually just one tile out of place somewhere

You'll actually see it a lot in places that were built to be Mexican restaurants

[-] proudblond@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

I bet it’s supposed to be a pseudo border around the whole room but we’re just seeing one wall so it looks super out of place. Can’t say it’s a design choice I would make though.

[-] prole 22 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Since people are linking to other twists on Chess, I'm a fan of 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel. Though, I will not try to say that I can wrap my head around it very well lol.

It's mind-wrinkling, but it somehow does actually seem to kind of work as a game.

[-] knightmare1147@lemmy.world 15 points 21 hours ago

Ah yes, a limitless duel of the minds in your local public restroom. Our battle will be legendary.

[-] ColdSideOfYourPillow@piefed.social 6 points 20 hours ago

The restroom is actually John Chess's natural habitat. You've been warned.

[-] unrealMinotaur@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago
[-] Ace120C@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 hour ago

oh wow thats actually a thing

[-] urquell@lemm.ee 3 points 15 hours ago

This could be battle royale :D

[-] Nziom@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago
[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 19 hours ago

Maybe even a two stage RT-2PM Topol intercontinental ballistic missile?

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 1 points 15 hours ago

Nuclear chess exists

Every take blows up around the pieces

[-] Nziom@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

Sounds balanced

[-] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 9 points 21 hours ago

This is how the chess pieces escape the game and take over the world. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?

[-] Ace120C@sopuli.xyz 6 points 21 hours ago
[-] Una@europe.pub 9 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Basically minecraft (or luanti for Foss enthusiasts)

[-] Ioughttamow@fedia.io 4 points 21 hours ago

So when the king dies, the remaining losing pieces go into anabasis mode
