I'm wondering if I should just delete lemmy to stay under the radar. 🤔 (I'm a US Citizen currently residing in the US, and moving out of the country is not really an option)

I feel so conflicted on this. On one hand, this is kinda like giving in to authoritarianism, but on the other hand, dissenting is kinda dangerous. 😓

@IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol I don't think you need to delete the account.
Just create another account and only log in to it via VPN, i2p or TOR. It's Fediverse, you can have multiple accounts with different content. And don't write anything private on the second (3,4,5...) account that can help in your identification.

And in general, showing the middle finger to surveillance systems it's simply rule of good tone on the modern internet. 😀

Be careful what you say - don't call for violence, definitely don't make threats of violence against specific figures, especially ones in office, and as a general rule don't spread personally identifying information

Past that? Let's say there's a crackdown. They're going after low hanging fruit to instill fear. By nature, the fediverse is hard to tie back to individuals... But if they're looking for you individually, they can find you

I wouldn't worry too much. Dissatisfaction is insanely high... They're more likely to do a great firewall and kill the fediverse long before they bother looking into lemmy accounts

Yeah. Bonus points if your instance isn't hosted in the US. I'm pretty sure mine is hosted in Canada, and with the way it's going currently in a year or two Canada wouldn't be willing to piss on the US government if it was on fire much less hand over a server full of IP addresses.

hand over a server full of IP addresses

well... hacking is a thing.

indeed, but so is Tor. not a perfect solution, but its there and it works well for "casual interactions".

Honestly Lemmy is way too small to be monitored and acted upon.

So even though the question is interesting I think deleting Lemmy because of the current administration is an over reaction.

On the contrary you probably have the opportunity to freely dissent here when others on mainstream socials networks can't.

But I'm European so it's easy for me to say that this is probably safe here. You have to evaluate the risk yourself but I think no administration gives a single sh** about Lemmy.

yeah, I've been wondering how much I should be sharing about my political opinions now... and a little concerned about my 15+ years of social media history.

[-] shaggyb@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

100% of all of it. You have the RIGHT. Not priviliege, not favor, not permission. RIGHT.

NSA Utah Datacenter has been online since May 2014 and has been sucking down the entire contents of the internet since then...

...so yeah.

Better to just embrace it and be ready for when they come for us, probably.

side note, if you are really fed up with this news cycle, you could take up a new hobby.

drones are crazy fast these days, and cheap to make, and there are SO many ways to build them now. they come with so mant different attachments, especially in the states. you could attach all kinds of crazy things to them. like nerf guns, and paintball guns and do all kinds of fun activities with lots of friends

also i hear the area around mar a lago is beautiful to vacation in, it would be great to get some birds eye view footage of that place. just for fun with a bunch of your friends

i hear also about how good drones are at stabalizing for long distance shots on video these days. you could fly them so high up you could barely see them or hear them from the ground.

some people even use them to drop small, or large packages from the air as well. just be careful they dont land on anyone important

that would be aweful......eh?

If they come for you, they come for me, and many many more. Don't pay personal information, you shouldn't do that anyways

(As a German living here) I doubt it. It's bad but it's still not China-level bad - and even in China they don't arrest literally everyone. If you're a foreign national living in the US however, you should be a bit more careful.

even in China they don’t arrest literally everyone

Which reminds me:

How the fuck did CCP-Critics such Youtubers serpentza and laowhy86 survive so long in China without getting prison sentence or getting deported?

Like, they were literally making videos critical of CCP while in China but they were fine. 🤔

I just hope I get the same luck as they did.

[-] shaggyb@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

The logical conclusion is that absolute suppression is not as effective as the authorities would like us to believe.

[-] coldwarful@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I watched those 2 channels some time ago too. I think they've become more and more CCP-critical over time though. I remember their videos almost 10 years ago being quite uncritical. They definitely couldn't put their current content out if they still lived in China.

I think the crux of it is though that they were Youtubers, their critical views were for outsiders/foreigners, not for the average Chinese douyin/youkou user and as such were less relevant for 公安. Chinese people couldn't watch those if they weren't using a VPN.

In the same vein, if you were making death threats against the current administration you'll likely get in trouble if you do it on Facebook or TruthSocial. But it would most likely fly completely under the radar if you did it in Mandarin and posted it on TikTok/Douyin. Censors can't censor what flies over their head.

[-] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

maybe they were used to find like-minded people to arrest them instead

[-] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 8 points 1 day ago

My solution is to VPN everything out of country. Not a single packet exits without going through a double hop VPN, with both hops being outside the Fourteen Eyes.

On top of that I run an ad/tracking blocking DNS server that’s updated pretty frequently.

Wasn't aware that US citizens knew of the existence of other counties, maybe excepting that they are all in Europe; Africa being another, possibly different, country.

Jokes aside. It's not much better here in the UK.

[-] SolidShake@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

It's not illegal to have an opinion dude. Calm down.

I mean, its hard to calm down after reading the news about Mahmoud Khalil. Sure, online comments is not the same as a protest, but I feel like its only a matter of time before they start digging through the internet.

[-] SnotFlickerman 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Consider this: Like the "Storm Area 51" meme where they said "they can't arrest all of us!" if all of us keep dissenting and never stop, well... they can't arrest all of us.

Literally 45 million people are registered Democrats, and while the USA has the largest prison population per capita, that tops out at 2 million. There's about 1.5 million Law Enforcement Officers in the USA. The US military is about 3 million people, and a bunch of them are stationed worldwide, not here at home.

So tops they could have 4.5 million people trying to arrest/disappear 45 million people. They currently don't even have the facilities to hold that many.

I repeat, they cannot arrest all of us.

Also, all the massively democrat areas are... the big cities... the economic powerhouses of the country. They'd be literally shooting themselves in the foot and getting rid of all their competent knowledge workers. They would have to massively increase immigration to replace them. Even Elon Musk doesn't think it's worth training the dumbfuck MAGA crowd, he wants to import Indian labor.

[-] shaggyb@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Nobody said that doing what's right would be easy. Or safe. Only that it's worth doing.

[-] Sheldan@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

There was this news report about a french scientist being denied entry to USA, because they critiqued the science budget cuts. While not arrested or something, it's still telling.

[-] peregrin5@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago

Very unlikely. They don't have the prison cells to lock up half the population nor the manpower to identify them with how many people DOGE is firing. You're more likely to just lose your job rather than get arrested.

[-] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

Maybe start using tor or i2p. You can use Lemmy over tor, for sure.

[-] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

Zero percent chance of that happening. C'moon now..

[-] seeigel@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Why arrest when it is enough to disable credit cards?
