Sure they were products of the time period. You had to own land at least to have any kind of power back in the day. They were not perfect but they did have a vision of a government that could work without traditional kings.

Aside though, probably the most fascinating thing about English is that it is a language in constant change. Many other languages don’t change at the rapidity of English. Some, like German, often just adapt the English word for a new thing as a loan word with their characters.
