Summary

Donald Trump suggested deporting violent repeat American offenders to foreign countries willing to incarcerate them for a small fee.

The proposal, shared at a Republican retreat in Florida, has no legal precedent in the U.S. and would require new legislation.

Critics cite constitutional concerns, including the Eighth Amendment that prohibits "cruel and unusual punishments."

The idea follows Trump’s broader crackdown on illegal immigration, which a recent poll shows has significant bipartisan support.

By "criminals" he means his political enemies.

[-] TommySoda@lemmy.world 66 points 3 weeks ago

Sounds like an excuse to put people into work camps as they perpetually wait for somewhere to be deported to. (Hint: The camp is the destination.)

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 46 points 3 weeks ago

2026: Hmmm, these camps are looking pretty full, and deportation is super expensive. We really need to solve this problem once and for all

A Solution, if you will...

Yeah this “proposal” violates literally everything about the Constitution.

This is just exile but with more words, which is not allowed under the immunities clause of the US Constitution.

Every person has rights to exercise due process within the several states, exile explicitly removes this.

Trump doesn't give a shit about the Constitution. He makes the rules. Checks and Balances? The only way that resonates with him is the checks he receives and his bank balances increasing.

He will take every inch given to him.

And just to be clear, I don't disagree with anything you said.

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

The what? Look, you can't just make up words.

[-] plz1@lemmy.world 47 points 3 weeks ago

Finally, the

they're sending us their criminals

projection comes into full view.

[-] Gerudo@lemm.ee 29 points 3 weeks ago

"For a small fee"

Isn't this just buying people? I seem to remember something like this happenening before.

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah this is just human trafficking.

[-] tiefling 26 points 3 weeks ago

Next step: defining trans people as criminals

Florida has been trying (via the "child abuser" route) as a way to get us the death penalty

[-] Skydancer@pawb.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

There's already another plan for trans folk. They'll claim it's a mental illness and send them to RFK's "wellness camps" to replace some of the migrant workers they're deporting.

[-] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

To where? Who is going to take them?

[-] randon31415@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

Well, if British recent history is to be followed, Rwanda.

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 3 weeks ago

Those "criminals" were asylum seekers.

[-] EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's a perspective thing these days

[-] tburkhol@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago

It's a short walk from "Mexico is sending us their criminals" to "We should send our criminals to Mexico."

[-] blakenong@lemmings.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Who would take him out?

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 8 points 3 weeks ago

There's precedent for doing this internationally. For example, Belgium pays the Netherlands to house some of their prisoners instead of building new prisons because the Netherlands has spare capacity and it's easier than building new prisons.

I doubt that this sort of thing is what Trump has in mind though.

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'll happily take a spot in a Nordic prison.

[-] Lupus@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

From experience I can tell you that even a nice prison is still a prison. Being locked up fucks with your mind.

[-] Kraiden@kbin.earth 4 points 3 weeks ago

We'll figure that out later. In the mean time, lets just keep them concentrated in one place, like a resort... or camp

They said Hitler was protected by the devil himself. He survived 42 (or more) assassination plots.

42 attempts on Hitler, where as he and his Death Cult were responsible for almost 21m murders.

Trump doesn't give a damn about the constitution, because the supreme Court will grant him whatever he fucking wants. When he can't concentrate Jews, people of color, people of non-white descent, political dissenters, LGBTQ+, physically and intellectually disabled, and people who refuse orders to persecute the preceding people in deportation camps, he will cull them.

42 attempts to reduce 20,900,000 murders? That's it. A whole fucking war was waged against Nazi Germany, but only 42 attempts to cut the head off the snake.

Weren't 3 of those times tied to the Pope. When the pope wants you dead you know you've made people mad

[-] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

fucking lol the irony

[-] wide_eyed_stupid@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I can't believe it. His followers have been telling me that he only wants to deport illegal immigrants! I'm shocked at this totally unexpected rhetoric!

[-] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago
[-] FiremanEdsRevenge@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Wouldn't be surprised if this stupid fuck sends them to Russia as meat shields in Ukraine.

[-] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

It’s a good thing he’s too illiterate to have read Kafka’s “In the Penal Colony” and figured out that there could be a literal, corporeal form of sentencing. 34 would be a heck of a time.

[-] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 6 points 3 weeks ago

He means he’s planning a trip abroad

[-] TheFogan@programming.dev 3 points 3 weeks ago

Hypothetical... what if this is a coup by say Vance, or any of his underlings. The fact is the constitutional crisis's of arresting a sitting president are all defeated.

We then discover he's not immune to being deported for his felonies... and trump walks down the street as they ring the bell and say "shame" over and over again.

[-] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

I still get a bit of a feeling that Vance's goal is to sabotage Trump. I know it's unlikely that this will be a good thing, but from his previous stances on policies and such, I'm not completely ruling it out.

[-] pineapple_pizza@lemmy.dexlit.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago

If this included him, since he's a criminal, then I'd be down.

[-] ringo32@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I bet inflation in us sky rocket.. Export wil shrink too because other country's wil add more tax on us products... as Healthcare become a 3th world country only the riches

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think the domestic prison slave industry would appreciate that very much.
