I almost guarantee you that Vivek thinks he's white. I have met more than one (wealthy) South Asian-American who literally consider themselves white and are just mystified when people react to them with racism because they're white. One old family friend who's family was from Sri Lanka was absolutely incensed that he couldn't say he was white on his passport.

I used to work with a dude who, while 100% born and raised in the USA, looked like he fell off the fucking Tapatio bottle. Him and I would go on ambulance calls together, and the folks who only spoke Spanish would start talking to him; he would shrug helplessly at them and then I, like Hank Hill levels of white, would pick up the conversation on pretty solid spanish. (They'd always give him a shit about it, which I found fucking hilarious) It straight up stumped me for a second when he started talking about "us white people" and it wasn't a joke. Still not sure what the root of it was, but I found it to be a really powerful and interesting political science moment. Dude's daddy was rich and he didn't want for anything, their family were some of the only Latinos in the area, and also his Latino heritage was about 0% important to him, so those things may have each or altogether had something to do with it.

Of course a trans person can change their name so other people can better relate and interact with the gender they identify with…. I hear you saying that you are trying to be true to your beliefs whether you support the persons politics, which is awesome I hope we can all strive to do the same.
