I mean, have you seen how they dressed?

Pirates were also largely LGBT/PoC - the maligned of society. The practice of a captain marrying people at sea supposedly started with pirates marrying gay couples because they couldn't get married onshore.

Pirates are like the definition of Be Gay, Do Crime.

Born too late to be a gay pirate.

Born too soon to be a gay space pirate.

Born just in time for the cyberpunk dystopia.

OF COURSE there would be theater queens among the groups then. lol

That tradition of nautical theatrics continued.

When crossing the equator or prime meridian, some sailors would have a sort of party for morale and tradition. In these parties, sailors would dress up and have theatrical ceremonies, usually involving a trial presided by King Neptune and his court(played by sailors of higher rank).

These events often feature cross-dressing and a degree of humiliation for those who are crossing the line for the first time, incliding paddling of the ass with various things. It was common, but is now less so, for a degree of rough hazing to occur(resulting in physical harm or even death); that is largely discouraged officially.

There is a higher degree of merit and promp if you cross the equator and prime, or anti-prime, meridian; which may be purposefully navigated towards by the captain.

Other than those crossings, the primary means of staving off boredom is masturbation, games of various types, and working out in the modern navy.

Damn, I've never set foot on a ship but that last paragraph makes me wonder if I've been a Navyman all along.

Who the f*** else would be able to tie all those God damn knots and figure out nautical terminology? And star charts and what the fuck a sexton is

[-] PyroNeurosis 36 points 4 weeks ago

A sexton is a religious position (not that kind of position, you scoundrel).

A sextant is a device for measuring latitude, usually at sea.

Honorary title for clergy who have a ton of sex?

Sextants can also give you your longitude if you have some star charts and a good chronometer

[-] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 16 points 4 weeks ago

Don't mind me, just here to corrupt any children you may have spared.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

[-] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

I love that this guy became a meme because he did a huge amount of work perfecting no-till agriculture, and saved waterways and farmland all over the world with his techniques.

He deserves to be remembered forever in meme form. Honest work, indeed.

[-] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

I didn't know that. I honestly thought he was just some farmer from a random interview that went memey

Implying that theater nerds are predisposed to be looters and rapists?

[-] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 11 points 4 weeks ago

Yep. Totally the direction I'm going with this one...

[-] Juice@midwest.social 4 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

A bunch of gay dudes on a boat making plays, stealing from racist british fops; I would totally be a pirate back in the day. Actually maybe its time to bring that shit back
